Porsche’s 911 has eight commonly identified generations, from the original 1963–1973 cars to the current 992. There is no single price for any generation: the U.S. Hagerty Price Guide examples below, retrieved for October 2026, range from $25,667 for a condition-3 2001 Carrera coupe to more than $700,000 at the high end for a condition-3 1964 911 coupe. Those are specific guide examples—not generation-wide averages or guaranteed sale prices.

Every Porsche 911 generation at a glance

Porsche’s historical timeline identifies the original 911, G series, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991, and 992. The dates below follow Porsche’s historical or press materials where available; they are not a uniform set of model-year boundaries. Production periods, model-year references, and regional timelines can overlap at a handoff.

Generation Dates and defining point Selected U.S. Hagerty guide example
Original 911 1963–1973 in Porsche’s historical overview. 1964 911 coupe: $515,000–$733,333, condition 3 (“Good”), October 2026. Hagerty.
G series 1974–1989 in Porsche’s historical overview. 1974 base 911 coupe: $44,333–$61,333, condition 3, October 2026. Hagerty.
964 1988–1994 in Porsche’s broad historical timeline; Porsche Classic lists U.S. 964s as 1989–1994. The era introduced the first all-wheel-drive 911, the Carrera 4. Not stated: no suitable current condition-3 model-year example is established here. Source: Hagerty valuation records reviewed for October 2026.
993 1993–1998 in Porsche’s historical overview; the last air-cooled generation before the 996 transition. 1995 Carrera Cabriolet: $53,667–$67,000, condition 3; typical value around $61,000 for this configuration, October 2026. Hagerty.
996 1997–2005 in Porsche’s historical overview; the transition from air-cooled to water-cooled engines. 2001 Carrera coupe: $25,667–$34,000, condition 3, October 2026. Hagerty.
997 2004–2012 in Porsche press material; some U.S. model-year references begin in 2005. 2005 Carrera Cabriolet: $32,533–$41,200, condition 3, October 2026. Hagerty. A separate 2005 Carrera coupe record is $55,500 in condition 3.
991 2011–2019 in Porsche’s historical timeline. 2012 Carrera Cabriolet: $43,667–$52,667, condition 3, October 2026. Hagerty.
992 2018–present in Porsche’s historical overview; the current generation. 2020 Carrera S Cabriolet: $121,000–$132,000; 2022 Targa 4S: $114,667–$121,000; 2026 Carrera GTS Cabriolet: $214,333–$230,667. Each is condition 3, October 2026. Hagerty.

Each dollar range is tied to the exact year, trim, body style, condition, and guide month shown. It is a snapshot of selected configurations, not a complete valuation matrix for every year or model. The 964 row is intentionally left without a price rather than filled by extrapolation.

What do these 911 values mean?

Hagerty describes its Price Guide as informational and says its valuations draw on auction results, asking prices, and private-sale activity. A guide estimate is therefore not the same thing as a particular completed sale, a seller’s asking price, an insurance value, or an appraisal of a specific car. Hagerty’s 2026 valuation data also distinguishes condition levels; the examples in the table are condition 3, described as “Good.”

The spread within a generation can be substantial. The 2005 Carrera Cabriolet and the separate Carrera coupe record do not share a single value simply because both are 997s. Likewise, the three 992 examples span a Carrera S Cabriolet, Targa 4S, and Carrera GTS Cabriolet from different model years. A Turbo, GT model, collector edition, or other special variant should be checked against a matching valuation record, not represented by an ordinary Carrera example.

How to estimate what your Porsche 911 is worth

Start with an exact match, then adjust for the car’s actual condition and history. A generation code alone is too broad to produce a useful estimate.

  1. Identify the car precisely. Confirm model year, generation, trim or variant, and body style: coupe, Cabriolet, or Targa. Note whether it is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and, where relevant, whether it has a manual transmission or PDK.
  2. Find a like-for-like valuation. Use a guide entry or recent market evidence for the same year and configuration. Do not substitute a coupe for a Cabriolet or a base Carrera for a GTS, Turbo, or GT model.
  3. Assess condition and mileage. Compare the guide’s condition definition with the car’s body, interior, mechanical state, and mileage. A condition-3 guide figure is not a promise that every car described as “good” will sell at that amount.
  4. Account for originality and history. Document modifications, equipment, maintenance, accident history, and any available service records. These details help explain why an individual car may differ from a broad guide reference.
  5. Match the market and date. Keep the geography and valuation date consistent. A U.S. guide figure from October 2026 is not automatically applicable to a car offered in another country or at a later date.

Which Porsche 911 generation is the best value?

There is no defensible generation-wide winner in these examples. The lowest listed guide range is for a 2001 996 Carrera coupe, but that does not establish that every 996 is the cheapest 911 to buy or own. The 1964 original 911 example is exceptionally specific and should not be used to price later early-911 cars. Meanwhile, a Cabriolet, coupe, Targa, and special trim can have different values even within the same generation.

Hagerty’s March 2026 valuation-trends analysis offers a separate market-level perspective: it reported that the condition-3 average for 1990–94 964s rose 69% over five years, from $88,400 to $149,600. The same analysis reported condition-3 averages of $92,900 for 2005–12 997s and $43,700 for 1999–2004 996s. These are Hagerty trend aggregates, not the individual model-year examples in the table, and should not be compared as though they were matched trims or body styles.

For a buyer, “best value” depends on the particular car, its condition and history, and the price being asked—not just the generation name. Compare equivalent configurations and weigh purchase price against the car’s documented condition rather than treating a guide figure as a buying target.
