Ethereum Price Analysis: What Makes ETH Rise or Fall?

ETH price fluctuations reflect both Ethereum’s fee and supply mechanics and broader market conditions. Here’s what the documented mechanisms and research can—and cannot—tell you.

ETH, or ether, is Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency; Ethereum is the network. ETH’s price can respond to both the network’s own supply-and-demand mechanics and broader economic conditions, but those mechanisms do not provide a reliable short-term forecast. The clearest protocol links are between demand for blockspace, transaction fees and fee burn, and between staking issuance and the amount of ETH burned.

How Ethereum’s network can affect ETH’s price

ETH is used to pay Ethereum transaction fees and to reward validators. That gives network activity a direct role in how fees are set and how some ETH is removed from circulation. It does not mean that increased network use automatically raises ETH’s market price: demand for the asset, expectations, alternatives and broader market conditions also matter.

Gas demand sets fees and affects burn

Ethereum transactions consume computational resources measured in gas, and fees are paid in ETH. Under EIP-1559, each block has a base fee that adjusts according to how much gas the block uses compared with its target. Users may also include a priority fee to encourage a proposer to include their transaction. Ethereum’s documentation notes that priority fees respond to network usage when a transaction is made.

The base fee is burned rather than paid to a validator. The EIP-1559 specification puts it plainly: “The base fee is always burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).” The priority fee, by contrast, goes to the block proposer. That means heavier demand for blockspace can affect fee levels and the amount of ETH burned, but it does not establish how much ETH’s market price will move. See the EIP-1559 specification and Ethereum’s gas and fees overview.

Staking issuance and fee burn both affect supply

ETH supply changes through issuance as well as burn. Since the Merge in September 2022, Ethereum no longer issues ETH to execution-layer miners; consensus-layer issuance rewards validators and varies with the amount of ETH staked. Burn, meanwhile, varies with network demand. The net effect at a given time depends on the balance between ETH issued and ETH burned.

Ethereum.org’s living documentation gives illustrative, conditional examples: at roughly 14 million ETH staked, it estimates issuance of about 1,700 ETH per day, and says an average gas price of 16 gwei would offset that issuance. These are examples based on the page’s assumptions, not current measurements or fixed thresholds. An issuer’s SEC-filed disclosure also cautions that EIP-1559 does not guarantee ETH will be deflationary; the balance can change with network activity. See Ethereum’s explanation of issuance and burn and the issuer disclosure.

How broader economic conditions can matter

ETH also trades in financial markets, where macroeconomic news can affect investors’ willingness to take risk. A 2023 Federal Reserve research paper, “Monetary Policy, Digital Assets, and DeFi Activity,” reports that monetary-policy surprises negatively affected BTC and ETH in its event-study analysis. The paper also reports that the volatility effect strengthened after December 2021.

Those are findings from a particular study, not a rule that every rate announcement will push ETH down. They do not specify the direction or size of a future ETH move. Read the result as evidence that monetary-policy surprises have been associated with market responses in the study, not as a standalone trading signal. Read the Federal Reserve paper.

Why regulation and governance uncertainty may enter market expectations

Permissionless blockchain networks raise questions about how their governance, risk management and operations fit with financial regulatory and auditing standards. The Federal Reserve’s 2024 note on governance discusses those issues as general challenges for such networks. It does not identify a specific current ETH regulatory event or measure an effect on ETH’s price, so it supports context—not a claim that a particular rule or governance decision caused a price move. Read the Federal Reserve note.

What these factors explain—and what they do not

The available evidence supports mechanisms and a qualified macroeconomic finding, not a ranking of what currently drives ETH. It does not establish the current ETH price, the effect of exchange or fund flows, derivatives positioning, investor sentiment, institutional purchases, or the cause of any particular move. Those questions require current market data and event-specific evidence.

How to read an ETH price move

A useful analysis separates what the protocol documents from what the market is doing. Network fee and supply mechanics explain how Ethereum activity can influence ETH’s circulating supply; they do not by themselves explain a daily price change. For a specific move, compare the timing of the move with current market data and relevant news, and distinguish a documented event from an assumed cause. Without that evidence, attributing a change to “burn,” institutional flows or sentiment would go beyond what these sources establish.
