Did Elon Musk launch a new cryptocurrency?
The materials cited here do not substantiate a new cryptocurrency issued by Elon Musk or X in 2025. X’s January 9, 2024 post said it planned to launch peer-to-peer payments, but did not announce an X-issued coin. The post described the plan as: “We will launch peer-to-peer payments, unlocking more user utility and new opportunities for commerce, and showcasing the power of living more of your life in one place.” X’s announcement is a statement about payments, not evidence of a cryptocurrency.
What is X Money, and is it a cryptocurrency?
Not on the evidence cited here. A digital wallet or payment service can move money without being a cryptocurrency, and the two claims should not be conflated.
On January 28, 2025, the Associated Press reported that X had announced a Visa partnership for X Money. The report described an in-platform digital wallet with peer-to-peer payments connected to debit cards and an option to transfer funds to a bank account. It did not establish crypto support or an X-issued token. This is a report of the announcement at that time, not confirmation of present availability or features. Read the Associated Press report.

How to assess claims about an “official X coin”
A token’s name, logo, celebrity references, or social-media promotion do not establish that X or Musk issued or endorsed it. Before relying on a claim, look for direct confirmation from an official X source and check what the source actually says: a payment feature announcement is not a token announcement.
- Confirm that an official X channel identifies the asset as a cryptocurrency issued by X.
- Separate independently marketed tokens and rumors from verified company statements.
- Do not treat a payment partnership, wallet, or bank-transfer feature as proof of a blockchain token.
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s February 27, 2025 staff statement says meme coins are generally speculative and volatile; it notes, “Given the speculative nature of meme coins, they tend to experience significant market price volatility.” The statement is general, is not an assessment of a specific Musk-related token, and expressly says it has no legal force or effect and does not alter applicable law. What is known—and what is not
The cited X post records a planned peer-to-peer payments service in 2024; the AP report records the Visa partnership announcement as reported in January 2025. Those sources do not establish whether X later announced a crypto integration or token, nor do they verify current X Money availability, features, or geographic coverage. For the latest status, consult X’s current official company channels and X Money product information.
