Bloomberg reported on August 22, 2025, that Tesla planned to add voice-assistant functions in China using DeepSeek and Doubao. The report attributed the details to a terms and service document uploaded to Tesla’s official website. Two models, different reported roles
In the reported arrangement, Doubao would process most voice commands, while DeepSeek would handle AI interaction. Both were described as hosted by ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud service. Why choose DeepSeek and Doubao instead of Grok?
The reporting establishes the planned providers and the competitive context: Tesla was seeking to catch local rivals that offered similar voice-assistant features. It does not establish one definitive reason for the model choice or confirm that Grok was formally rejected for the China product.
Futurism raised possible legal hurdles involving American technology and consumer preference, but those are explanations offered as speculation, not confirmed reasons from Tesla or the Bloomberg report. Without a direct explanation from Tesla, the answer to “Why not Grok?” remains unsettled.

Does this mean Grok is unavailable in Tesla cars?
No such broad conclusion follows. Tesla’s support page describes Grok as a beta in-car feature and says eligible vehicles need an AMD processor and software version 2025.26 or later. The cited contemporaneous reporting does not verify a later launch, identify which vehicles or software versions received the integration, or establish its present availability. Is “a humiliating defeat” a fair description?
It is an editorial framing rather than a demonstrated business or technical result. The documented development is that Tesla reportedly planned to use Chinese AI providers for a China-market assistant amid local competition. The available reporting does not show that Tesla lost a contest to Grok, that customers rejected Grok, or that the planned system underperformed.
AI investor Louis Liang, quoted by Futurism as speaking to Bloomberg, described the development more broadly: “While many recognize DeepSeek’s achievements, this represents just the beginning of China’s AI innovation wave,” he said. “We are witnessing the advent of AI mass adoption — this goes beyond national competition.” That is a view about China’s AI adoption, not evidence of Tesla’s motive or of the plan’s eventual success.
