Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade went live on mainnet on May 7, 2025. It changed both the execution and consensus layers, with the biggest practical effects involving programmable wallet accounts, validator operations, and the amount of data rollups can post. Most ETH holders did not need to do anything to receive the upgrade; node operators had to run compatible software.
When did Ethereum Pectra go live?
Pectra activated successfully at epoch 364032 on May 7, 2025, at 10:05 UTC. The Ethereum Foundation’s announcement gave the scheduled time as 10:05:11 UTC. Pectra followed Dencun and combined Prague execution-layer changes with Electra consensus-layer changes.
The hardfork meta proposal, EIP-7600, lists 11 included EIPs: EIP-2537, EIP-2935, EIP-6110, EIP-7002, EIP-7251, EIP-7549, EIP-7623, EIP-7685, EIP-7691, EIP-7702, and EIP-7840. The changes with the clearest effects for users, validators, and rollups are described below.
What Pectra changed for wallets and accounts
EIP-7702 lets an EOA opt into smart-contract code
An externally owned account (EOA)—a conventional Ethereum account controlled by a private key—can sign an authorization allowing its address to use code from a chosen smart contract. Wallets can use this mechanism to offer features such as bundling multiple operations, sponsored transaction fees, or alternative recovery arrangements.

This is an opt-in mechanism and a step toward account abstraction. It does not automatically turn every wallet into a smart account. The account owner must authorize the delegation, and the selected code has meaningful control over the account. The Ethereum Foundation describes safeguards: delegations are chain-specific by default, authorizations can be tied to the account nonce, and an owner can issue a new authorization to revoke or replace a delegation. Those safeguards do not make an unsafe delegation target safe, so users should carefully verify what code they authorize.

What Pectra changed for Ethereum validators
EIP-7251 raises the maximum effective balance
The minimum balance needed to activate a validator remains 32 ETH. For validators configured to use the change, the maximum effective balance rose to 2048 ETH. This allows rewards to compound above 32 ETH and gives operators a way to consolidate validators. The higher maximum is optional; it does not mean every validator automatically changes or that 2048 ETH is required.
EIP-7002 gives withdrawal owners an exit trigger
Before EIP-7002, only a validator’s active signing key could trigger an exit. Now an address set as the validator’s withdrawal credential can also initiate one through an execution-layer trigger. This reduces reliance on the signing-key holder in delegated staking arrangements, but it does not eliminate the other risks of using a staking provider.

EIP-6110 speeds up deposit processing
The Ethereum Foundation described deposit processing as falling from around nine hours to roughly 13 minutes. These are approximate figures from its announcement, not a guaranteed waiting time for every deposit.
What Pectra changed for rollups and transaction data
EIP-7691 increases blob capacity
Blobs are temporary data storage that layer-2 networks use to submit compressed transaction data and proofs to Ethereum layer 1. Pectra raised the target number of blobs per block from three to six and the maximum from six to nine.

EIP-7623 addresses bandwidth pressure
More blob capacity does not guarantee that every layer-2 transaction becomes cheaper. Fees still depend on network usage and the rollup. Pectra also raised calldata costs and capped worst-case block size through EIP-7623, a measure intended to offset bandwidth pressure from the added capacity.

The Ethereum Foundation said mainnet users and ETH holders did not need to take action for Pectra to activate. Node operators did need compatible client software. For the May 2025 fork, the Foundation listed specific compatible execution and consensus clients; those versions were fork requirements at that time, not current installation recommendations. Validators needed to update both the consensus-layer beacon node and validator client.
