The biggest EV battery makers are not ranked by stock-market value, revenue, or factory capacity. This list uses 2025 battery installations: the amount of battery capacity fitted into electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids registered across 80 countries.
That distinction matters for investors and consumers. A company can announce a huge future factory and still rank below a supplier whose batteries are already being installed in more vehicles. On this measure, the market is highly concentrated: CATL and BYD together accounted for 55.6% of global EV-battery installations in 2025.
The 2025 ranking at a glance
Global installed EV-battery volume reached 1,187 GWh in 2025, a 31.7% increase from 2024, according to SNE Research.

1. CATL: 464.7 GWh installed
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., better known as CATL, was the clear leader. Its 39.2% share was more than twice BYD’s and over four times the share of the largest non-Chinese supplier, LG Energy Solution.
CATL supplies Chinese automakers as well as international customers including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. Its portfolio includes lithium-iron-phosphate products, alongside other lithium-ion technologies. The company is also developing sodium-ion batteries, although sodium-ion is not its dominant current EV chemistry.
For investors, CATL’s scale is the central fact. High volume can support purchasing power, manufacturing experience, and customer reach, but it also exposes the company to Chinese competition, pricing pressure, trade restrictions, and the capital requirements of continually expanding production.
2. BYD: 194.8 GWh installed
BYD supplied 16.4% of installed EV-battery capacity in 2025. It is unusual among the companies on this list because it is both a major vehicle manufacturer and a battery producer.

Its Blade Battery is a prominent lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP, product line.
BYD’s combined vehicle-and-battery model can give it control over more of the supply chain. It also makes the business harder to assess as a pure battery investment: the company’s results reflect vehicle pricing, car demand, manufacturing, batteries, and other businesses.
3. LG Energy Solution: 108.8 GWh installed
LG Energy Solution was the largest non-Chinese supplier, with a 9.2% global share. Its customers include Tesla, General Motors, Hyundai Motor Group, Kia, and Volkswagen.
Its installed volume increased in 2025, but its market share declined because the overall market—and Chinese suppliers in particular—grew faster. That is an important difference between absolute growth and competitive position: a company can install more batteries while representing a smaller slice of a rapidly expanding market.

LG Energy Solution has substantial exposure to international automakers and North American production. For investors, that creates potential access to regional supply chains while also bringing risks from factory ramp-ups, customer delays, policy changes, and EV-demand fluctuations.
4. CALB: 62.8 GWh installed
China Aviation Lithium Battery, or CALB, ranked fourth with a 5.3% share. It is one of China’s largest battery suppliers after CATL and BYD.
CALB’s position reflects the scale of China’s domestic EV market and the efforts of Chinese battery companies to expand beyond it. As with the other suppliers on this list, installed GWh shows that its batteries reached vehicles; it does not by itself show profitability, average selling prices, or return on invested capital.
5. Gotion High-Tech: 53.5 GWh installed
Gotion High-Tech held a 4.5% share in 2025. The Chinese company supplies both LFP and ternary lithium-ion batteries and has been building an international presence.

Volkswagen is a major shareholder and strategic partner, giving Gotion a connection to one of the world’s largest automakers. That relationship may improve customer access, but concentration around a major customer can also become a risk if vehicle plans or purchasing requirements change.
6. SK On: 44.5 GWh installed
SK On installed 44.5 GWh, equal to a 3.7% global share. Its batteries were used by Hyundai Motor Group, Ford, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz.
The company is particularly exposed to EV-production changes in North America and Europe because of its customer mix and manufacturing footprint. Battery plants require large upfront investments and time to reach efficient utilization, so production delays or slower-than-expected EV demand can weigh heavily on financial performance.
7. Panasonic: 44.2 GWh installed
Panasonic ranked just behind SK On, with 44.2 GWh and a 3.7% share. Tesla remains its principal automotive customer, making Panasonic’s battery volume sensitive to Tesla’s model mix, factory output, and regional sales.

Panasonic is focused on cylindrical 2170 and 4680 cells and on improving production efficiency in North America. Its close relationship with Tesla is commercially significant, but customer concentration is also something investors should examine rather than treating the relationship as a guarantee of future growth.
8. EVE Energy: 31.3 GWh installed
EVE Energy accounted for 2.6% of 2025 installations. It supplies lithium-ion batteries for vehicles and also operates in energy storage.
EVE is sometimes discussed alongside solid-state battery developments, but its current ranking is based on batteries installed in vehicles today. Solid-state research and future commercialization should not be confused with current mass-market installation volume.
9. Samsung SDI: 28.9 GWh installed
Samsung SDI ranked ninth with a 2.4% share. Its automotive customers include BMW, Audi, Rivian, and Jeep.

10. SVOLT Energy Technology: 28.5 GWh installed
SVOLT Energy Technology completed the 2025 top 10 with 28.5 GWh and a 2.4% share. It is a Chinese battery manufacturer originally associated with Great Wall Motor.
Rankings can change quickly as automakers switch suppliers and new production lines ramp up. Some earlier-year lists placed Sunwoda in the top 10, but SVOLT occupied the tenth position in the full-year 2025 table.

China dominates installed EV-battery volume
Chinese manufacturers accounted for almost 75% of global electric-car battery deployment in 2025, according to the International Energy Agency. The SNE table shows that concentration directly: seven of the ten listed companies are Chinese, and CATL and BYD alone supplied more than half of global installations.

Battery volume is not the same as manufacturing capacity
This ranking measures batteries installed in registered EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids. It does not measure factory nameplate capacity. Global lithium-ion manufacturing capacity exceeded 4 TWh at the end of 2025, while batteries installed in vehicles during the year totaled 1,187 GWh. Those figures answer different questions.
Battery makers are not always standalone investments
BYD combines battery production with vehicle manufacturing. Panasonic is part of a broader electronics group, while several suppliers depend heavily on a small number of automaker customers. Before buying a stock, review the parent company, business segments, debt, capital spending, customer concentration, and geographic exposure—not just the battery ranking.
Tesla is not in this top 10
Tesla manufactures some cells, but it is not listed among SNE Research’s top ten battery suppliers by 2025 installed capacity. The IEA says Tesla’s fully in-house EV-battery production remains limited; it continues to source most batteries from suppliers including Panasonic, LG Energy Solution, and CATL.
Has the ranking changed in 2026?
Partial-year data shows why a dated ranking should be labeled carefully. SNE Research recorded 469.2 GWh of global EV-battery installations from January through May 2026, up 16.3% year over year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCATL remained first with 188.4 GWh and a 40.2% share, while BYD ranked second with 67.6 GWh and a 14.4% share. This 40.2% figure applies to January–May 2026, not full-year 2025.
The partial-year 2026 top 10 also differed from the 2025 full-year list: Sunwoda entered, while Samsung SDI dropped out for that period. Seven Chinese companies represented 72.6% of the combined volume of the top 10 in January–May 2026.
How to use this list when researching an EV-battery stock
- Check the metric. Confirm whether a source is reporting installed GWh, revenue, shipments, production capacity, or market capitalization.
- Look at the customer base. A supplier with one dominant customer may have strong demand today but greater earnings volatility if that customer changes its production plans.
- Separate current products from future technology. Sodium-ion, solid-state, and 4680 announcements do not automatically translate into current vehicle installations or profits.
- Review regional exposure. Tariffs, local-content rules, subsidies, and restrictions on Chinese technology can affect where batteries can be sold and manufactured.
- Read the financial statements. Examine margins, cash flow, debt, capital expenditure, warranty provisions, and factory utilization before making an investment decision.
