A manufacturer’s refurbished program usually costs more than a peer-to-peer listing, yet it may include a new battery, genuine parts, a longer warranty, and a clearer return process.
For the lowest-risk purchase, start with the phone maker: Apple for an iPhone, Samsung for a Galaxy, or Google for a Pixel. For broader selection and lower prices, compare Back Market, eBay Refurbished, Swappa, Amazon Renewed, and carrier inventory—but read the exact listing terms before paying.

1. Apple Certified Refurbished: best for iPhone buyers
Apple’s refurbished store is the safest default for an iPhone buyer who values predictable quality over the lowest possible price. Apple says its refurbished iPhones receive a new battery and outer shell, genuine Apple replacement parts where needed, full functional testing, and a new white box.
The purchase includes the same one-year limited warranty that applies to new Apple hardware. Current refurbished iPhone product pages also specify a 14-day return period, and the phones are listed as unlocked.

- US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.
The financial trade-off is selection. Apple’s refurbished inventory changes frequently, so a specific storage size, color, or model may disappear before you are ready to buy. Compare the price with a newer model on sale before deciding that the refurbished option is automatically cheaper.
2. Samsung Certified Re-Newed: best for Galaxy phones
Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed program is the strongest choice for a refurbished Galaxy. Samsung says these phones use 100% genuine Samsung parts, receive a certified new Samsung battery, a new IMEI, cleaning, inspection, and a 147-point quality test.
They include a one-year limited manufacturer warranty and are sold unlocked for compatibility with major U.S. carriers, subject to carrier compatibility. Samsung’s current purchase pages specify free returns within 15 days.
Do not assume the box contains a wall charger. For example, a current Galaxy S24+ Certified Re-Newed listing includes a data cable and SIM-ejector pin but no charger. Check the product page’s “What’s in the box” section and include a replacement charger in your cost comparison if necessary.
3. Google Certified Refurbished: best for Pixel owners
Google Certified Refurbished is the logical place to start when buying a Pixel. Google says the phones are tested to its standards, restored with authentic Google parts when needed, and sold unlocked and compatible with any carrier.
Google provides a one-year limited warranty. It evaluates the battery and replaces it with a new genuine Google battery if it does not meet its performance standards. Devices ship with the latest applicable software at the time of refurbishment.
That software detail does not extend the phone’s support life. A refurbished Pixel still has the update period associated with its model, so check Google’s published support schedule before buying an older generation. Also confirm 5G-band compatibility with your carrier; unlocked does not mean every network feature works everywhere.
4. Back Market: best selection and easy returns
Back Market is a marketplace, not one central refurbishing facility. It connects buyers with vetted professional refurbishers, which means the individual merchant and listing matter.

- Android 13.0 Operating System: Runs on the latest Android OS for smooth performance and up-to-date features.
- Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac: Stay connected with others wirelessly and stream content at high speeds.
- 6.6" AMOLED Display: View vivid content on a large, high-resolution screen.
- Quad Camera Array: Capture stunning photos and 4K video with the advanced camera system.
- Long Battery Life: Power through the day on a large 5000mAh battery.
Back Market says smartphone inspections can include up to 100 checkpoints. Its stated minimum battery standard is 80% capacity, and it offers a one-year warranty plus 30-day free returns. That combination makes it attractive for buyers who want more time to test a phone than manufacturer stores typically provide.
Cosmetic grades are Fair, Good, Excellent, and Premium. These grades describe appearance, not whether the phone should function. Before ordering, check the listing for:
- battery-capacity language or an optional battery upgrade;
- the refurbisher’s identity and rating;
- included accessories;
- carrier-lock and network information; and
- who pays return shipping under the specific circumstances.
An 80% battery may be perfectly usable, but it has less remaining capacity than a phone with a new battery. Price the likely replacement into the deal rather than comparing only the checkout price.
5. eBay Refurbished: best marketplace warranty
eBay can combine competitive pricing with meaningful warranty coverage, but only when the listing is in the official eBay Refurbished program. The separate condition called “Seller refurbished” is not the same program.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Official grades are Certified, Excellent, Very Good, and Good. Certified Refurbished products are described as pristine, like-new devices from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and include a two-year Allstate-serviced warranty. Excellent, Very Good, and Good listings include a one-year Allstate-serviced warranty. Official listings also include free shipping and 30-day free returns, subject to stated exceptions.
Look for the official eBay Refurbished condition and warranty information on the listing page. If the page merely says “seller refurbished,” the seller’s description, return policy, battery disclosure, and warranty control the transaction.
6. Swappa: best for experienced bargain hunters
Swappa is primarily a used-device marketplace rather than a standardized manufacturer-refurbishment program. It can produce the lowest prices, but you need to do more of the due diligence.
Swappa staff review listings before publication. Listed phones must have a clean IMEI or ESN, no activation lock, no operating-system lock, no water damage, no cracked glass, and full functionality. PayPal buyer protection can help when an item does not arrive or is significantly not as described.

That protection is not the same as a universal change-of-mind return policy. A buyer-remorse return is generally at the seller’s discretion, and Swappa does not provide one standard refurbishment warranty for every listing. The seller sets the warranty and return terms. Swappa’s published buyer guide also says buyers pay a 3% buyer fee, refunded when a qualifying PayPal refund is processed.
Swappa makes the most sense when you can evaluate model numbers, battery health, carrier status, seller history, and photos yourself—and when the savings justify that extra work.
7. Verizon Certified Pre-Owned: best for a carrier purchase
Verizon Certified Pre-Owned is convenient if you want the phone, activation, carrier billing, and support handled in one transaction. Verizon says its Total Quality Inspection checks charging, ports, display pixels, connectivity, speakers, microphones, Bluetooth, buttons, software, and battery performance.
The protection is shorter than the manufacturer programs above: Verizon’s FAQ describes a 90-day limited warranty. Its published information has also referred to different unwanted-return periods in different support materials, so check the current product page and order terms before buying.
A Verizon CPO phone should not automatically be treated as an unlocked manufacturer-refurbished device. Confirm whether it is locked, when it can be unlocked, and whether it will work with your intended carrier before placing the order.
8. Amazon Renewed: convenient, but listing-dependent
Amazon Renewed can be useful for price shoppers, but the product page matters more than the Amazon name. Renewed phones are supplied by program sellers, and battery condition, accessories, warranty language, and cosmetic quality can vary.
Amazon’s Renewed Guarantee generally lets customers request a refund or replacement within 90 days of receipt when the product is unsatisfactory or does not work as expected. Renewed phones may arrive in a generic box with generic accessories. Amazon’s published Renewed materials state a minimum 90-day program warranty, while individual listings may display additional or different seller terms.
“Renewed Premium” has separate terms only when the listing specifically identifies the phone as Renewed Premium and displays the applicable guarantee. Do not infer Premium coverage from a favorable price or from the word “renewed” alone.

How to compare the real cost
The cheapest listing is not always the cheapest purchase. Compare the total cost over the period you expect to own the phone:
- Start with the delivered price. Include shipping, sales tax, marketplace fees, and any required buyer fee.
- Add missing essentials. Budget for a charger, cable, case, or screen protector if the phone does not include them.
- Value the battery. A phone with an 80% battery may need replacement sooner than one with a new battery.
- Check warranty duration. A one- or two-year warranty can be worth paying for if a repair would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars.
- Check return friction. Confirm the deadline, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fee, and whether the refund covers the original shipping charge.
- Compare support life. An older phone may be cheap but receive fewer operating-system and security updates.
A simple comparison is:
Total cost = phone price + tax and fees + accessories + likely battery cost − expected value of included warranty coverage
The final term is difficult to calculate precisely, but it is a useful reminder that a warranty and a reliable return policy have financial value.

1. Confirm it is unlocked
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. It is unlocked only when the entry says “No SIM restrictions.”
For Android phones, verify the carrier status in the listing and test your own SIM or eSIM. A phone can be SIM-unlocked but still lack the bands or eSIM configuration your carrier uses.
2. Check for ownership locks before signing in
Never keep an iPhone that displays “iPhone Locked to Owner.” The previous owner must remove Activation Lock; if you bought the phone online and see that screen, begin the return process.
On Android, a factory-reset-protected phone may demand the previous owner’s Google Account or screen-lock credentials during setup. A factory reset does not necessarily remove this protection.
3. Inspect battery and parts information
On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. “Genuine Apple Part” indicates a genuine part installed using Apple processes. “Unknown” can indicate a nongenuine part, a previously used part, incomplete installation, or a part that is not working as expected.

The large screen is ideal for multitasking, allowing apps and media to feel spacious and engaging even in a single glance.
Then open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and review Maximum Capacity and any degraded-battery messages. Battery information may be unavailable when the battery is unknown or nongenuine.
4. Match the phone to the listing
Compare the model, storage capacity, color, IMEI, carrier status, and included accessories with the order. Save screenshots of the listing and photograph the package and phone before use. This documentation can help if the device is materially different from what you purchased.
5. Test everything before the return deadline
- Charging port, cable connection, and wireless charging if supported
- Cellular calls, texts, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC
- Cameras, microphones, speakers, vibration, buttons, and biometrics
- Display brightness, touch response, dead pixels, and burn-in
- Battery drain during normal use
Do not wait until the warranty period to discover a defect that could have been returned within 14, 15, or 30 days. Run these checks immediately and keep the packaging until you are satisfied.
Common claims that mislead buyers
- “Every refurbished phone has a new battery.” No. Apple and Samsung’s official programs promise new batteries, while Back Market sets an 80% minimum and many other sellers vary.
- “Certified refurbished always means manufacturer-refurbished.” No. Program definitions differ. eBay’s official Certified Refurbished tier is distinct from its “Seller refurbished” condition.
- “Unlocked works on every carrier.” No. Unlock status and network-band compatibility are separate.
- “A used phone keeps the original manufacturer warranty.” Do not assume it. Check coverage using the manufacturer’s serial-number or IMEI tool.
- “A factory reset removes ownership locks.” No. Apple Activation Lock and Android device protection can survive a reset.
FAQ
What is the safest place to buy a refurbished phone?
Buy directly from the manufacturer when possible. Apple Certified Refurbished, Samsung Certified Re-Newed, and Google Certified Refurbished offer genuine parts, manufacturer testing, a new battery or battery replacement standard, and a one-year warranty.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Back Market better than Amazon Renewed?
Neither is automatically better. Back Market offers a stated 80% minimum battery capacity, a one-year warranty, and 30-day returns, while Amazon Renewed generally offers a 90-day guarantee. Both are seller-based, so inspect the individual listing and seller terms.
What battery health should a refurbished phone have?
There is no universal standard. Back Market states an 80% minimum, while Apple and Samsung’s official programs provide new batteries and Google replaces a battery that fails its performance standard. For other listings, ask for the battery-health figure or budget for a replacement.
How can I avoid buying a locked refurbished phone?
For an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and confirm Carrier Lock says “No SIM restrictions.” Also make sure the phone does not show “iPhone Locked to Owner.” On Android, confirm the carrier status and ensure setup does not request the previous owner’s Google Account.
The Bottom Line
Choose Apple Certified Refurbished for an iPhone, Samsung Certified Re-Newed for a Galaxy, or Google Certified Refurbished for a Pixel if reducing risk is your priority. Choose Back Market or official eBay Refurbished for more selection and stronger marketplace convenience. Swappa and Amazon Renewed can save more money, but require closer inspection of the seller, battery, warranty, and return terms.
