Pinterest announced AI-powered auto-collages on June 11, 2025, as a limited Pinterest Ad Labs pilot. The tool was designed to turn advertisers’ product catalogs into shoppable collage ads at scale; Pinterest named Macy’s as a retailer testing it. The announcement does not establish that auto-collages are now generally available to advertisers.
What Pinterest’s auto-collage pilot was designed to do
Pinterest said auto-collages could transform an advertiser’s existing product catalog into “thousands” of shoppable collages in minutes. That volume and speed are Pinterest’s product claims, not an independently verified production benchmark. The goal was to give retailers more visual variations than a catalog of isolated product images, while reducing the time and creative work needed to assemble them.
Unlike a mood board with no direct shopping path, an advertiser collage can connect products in the composition to product information. Pinterest’s broader advertiser-collage announcement described tagging products and promoting collages as Showcase or Collection ads, through which users can tap to explore brand and product information. That does not mean every collage included in-app checkout; the public descriptions establish product tagging and shopping links, not universal Pinterest transactions. Pinterest’s 2024 announcement explains the advertiser-collage formats.
How Pinterest said products could be selected and combined
Pinterest described auto-collages as drawing on signals such as products people save, engage with, or shop. The reported examples included grouping clothing into outfits, assembling similar products, and using patterns from collages that had already attracted strong engagement. These are descriptions of the proposed feature, not a published technical specification of its ranking or composition system. Pinterest’s announcement and TechCrunch’s report describe those signals and examples.

“Personalization” in this context should not be taken to mean Pinterest disclosed that every user would receive a uniquely generated collage. The public descriptions point to engagement and shopping signals, product similarity, and successful collage patterns, but do not specify how individual-level selection worked or how much control advertisers had over combinations.
Who could use it, and what the early result showed
Pinterest identified Macy’s as a retailer testing auto-collages and providing feedback. The company said it planned to expand access gradually, indicating a selected-advertiser test rather than an open self-serve feature for every Pinterest Business account.

TechCrunch reported Pinterest’s early test finding that auto-collages were saved at twice the rate of standard Product Pins. The available announcement does not provide the sample size, comparison methodology, or test conditions. Saves are an engagement signal; this figure does not show twice the sales, conversions, revenue, or return on ad spend.
A separate result in Pinterest’s 2024 announcement should not be attributed to AI auto-collages: Pinterest said a human-created Wayfair advertiser-collage campaign produced 28% more efficient CPC and 5.4-times higher engagement against Retail Vertical benchmarks. That is a different campaign and format, not evidence of auto-collage performance.

How auto-collages differ from other Pinterest formats
| Format | Who creates it? | Product connection | Primary role |
|---|---|---|---|
| User collage | Pinterest user | Optional or indirect | Inspiration and curation |
| Advertiser collage | Brand or advertiser | Products can be tagged | Branded, shoppable advertising |
| AI auto-collage pilot | Pinterest automation using an advertiser’s catalog | Intended to be shoppable | Automated production of catalog-based creative |
| Performance+ Creative | Pinterest automation | Catalog-based Shopping and Collections formats | Automated creative variations and optimization |
Pinterest’s 2024 Ad Labs announcement covered advertiser collages and other creative experiments, including personalized backgrounds. The 2025 auto-collage pilot added AI-driven assembly from catalog inventory. These should not be conflated with Performance+ Creative, which Pinterest documents as a related but distinct set of catalog automation features.
Is Pinterest auto-collage available to advertisers now?
The June 2025 announcement confirms a pilot through Ad Labs, with selected advertisers and planned gradual expansion. Pinterest’s June 17, 2026 AI announcement discusses Business Assistant, Pinterest MCP, Ask Pinterest, and Performance+ dynamic creative selection, but does not say auto-collages became broadly available. Pinterest’s 2026 announcement is therefore evidence of newer commercial AI tools, not a general-release notice for the exact pilot.

Pinterest’s current public documentation does describe related Performance+ Creative capabilities: automatically creating multiple Shopping and Collections ad formats from product Pins, resizing eligible images, and generating backgrounds. Those features do not by themselves confirm access to the specific auto-collage interface. Pinterest’s Performance+ Creative help page documents the related automation.
For catalog-based Pinterest advertising generally, businesses typically need a Pinterest Business account, a product catalog or feed, usable product data, organized product groups, and a compatible campaign setup. Pinterest’s Shopping Ads documentation describes the catalog workflow. The pilot’s exact prerequisites were not publicly detailed. Operationally, feed freshness, accurate prices and availability, working product links, and appropriate image rights matter for any automated shopping creative.

What advertisers should evaluate before scaling catalog automation
Automating a collage can reduce manual assembly, but it does not remove merchandising or brand decisions. A visually plausible combination might imply a bundle that is not sold, pair products that do not fit together, or feature items that are out of stock. Poor product photography, inconsistent attributes, or stale feed data can also produce weak or misleading creative.
- Control the eligible assortment. Use product groups and exclusions to keep low-stock, clearance, regulated, or frequently changing products out of unsuitable creative.
- Review brand-sensitive output. Human approval is prudent where the layout, representation, claims, or product pairing could create reputational or compliance risk.
- Measure the funnel, not just saves. Track saves and outbound clicks separately from add-to-cart events, conversion rate, revenue, and ROAS. Separate prospecting from retargeting results.
- Compare like with like. Test automated creative against manually curated collages and standard catalog ads, using holdouts or geographic tests where feasible before reallocating substantial budget.
- Check the buying path. Confirm product pages work and reflect current price and availability; a collage can inspire consideration while the eventual purchase occurs later or elsewhere.
Pinterest reported in June 2026 that its newer Performance+ dynamic creative-selection model increased click volume by 7.5% versus its previous singular-variant model in testing. That is a result for a separate 2026 Performance+ test, not the 2025 auto-collage pilot. Pinterest’s announcement describes that model.
Documented alternatives while the pilot’s availability remains unclear
Advertisers who need catalog-driven creative can consider Pinterest’s documented tools without assuming they have access to auto-collages:
- Performance+ Creative: Pinterest documents multiple Shopping and Collections ad formats, image resizing, and generated backgrounds. See Performance+ Creative.
- Manual Collections ads: Advertisers can select products for a more deliberately merchandised presentation. See Collections ads.
- Standard Shopping ads: A more direct option for product-level promotion through catalog feeds and product groups. See Shopping ads.
- Custom advertiser collages: A useful route when a seasonal story, visual concept, or carefully controlled assortment matters more than automated production.
External design or feed-management tools can support creative production or catalog quality, but they do not provide access to Pinterest’s Ad Labs pilot or replace Pinterest’s ad delivery and product tagging.
