Apple executives reportedly discussed a possible bid for AI-search company Perplexity in June 2025, but the reported conversations were preliminary. The available reporting did not establish an offer, agreed price, formal negotiations with Perplexity’s management, or a deal. If Apple had bought the company for anything close to its reported $14 billion financing valuation, the purchase would have been far larger than Apple’s roughly $3 billion Beats acquisition—but that comparison is hypothetical, not a disclosed bid.
What Apple reportedly considered—and what it did not
Bloomberg reported on June 20, 2025, that Apple executives had held internal discussions about potentially bidding for Perplexity. The reported participants included Apple M&A chief Adrian Perica, Services chief Eddy Cue, and senior AI decision-makers. Bloomberg described the idea as early-stage and said it might not lead to an offer. Bloomberg’s account and Reuters’ account carried by Yahoo Finance did not establish that Apple had made a bid or begun formal bid discussions with Perplexity management.
That distinction matters in mergers and acquisitions. Internal interest is not the same as approaching a company, negotiating terms, signing an agreement, obtaining regulatory clearance, or closing a transaction. The public reporting supports the first step only; it does not establish the later ones.
The reports available here concern events in June 2025 and do not establish whether the discussions advanced or ended after that. Without a newer independently verified report or an official announcement, the accurate description is that Apple reportedly considered a possible bid—not that it is buying Perplexity.

What Perplexity would bring to Apple
Perplexity is better understood as an AI-search company than as a single AI model. Its consumer product searches the web and uses AI to synthesize answers, with citations and follow-up questions. A purchase could give Apple a ready-made search experience, retrieval and ranking technology, product expertise, and a team focused on AI-powered information discovery. It would not, by itself, mean Apple acquired every model or outside service Perplexity may use.
A faster route to AI-powered search
Building a useful search product requires more than generating fluent text: it depends on finding relevant web pages, ranking them, grounding answers in sources, and presenting results clearly. Perplexity could offer Apple a faster starting point than building a comparable consumer-facing service from scratch. Coverage of the reported talks described the appeal as access to an existing product and technology, rather than simply an acquisition of a general-purpose frontier model. See 9to5Mac’s account and MacRumors’ coverage.
Siri, Apple Intelligence, and Safari
One possible use would be to improve web retrieval and answer synthesis in Siri or Apple Intelligence. Perplexity could also inform an AI-search experience in Safari or system search. Those are plausible strategic routes, not confirmed Apple product plans. Search is only one part of an assistant: Siri also needs reliable intent recognition, personal-context handling, tool use, privacy controls, and deep operating-system integration. Buying a search company would not automatically solve those challenges.

Less reliance on Google—and more leverage
Perplexity could give Apple another search option to consider for Safari, Siri, or device-wide search, and could strengthen Apple’s negotiating position with outside providers. That does not mean Perplexity would immediately replace Google. Any change would involve product decisions, technical integration, contractual considerations, and potentially regulatory scrutiny. Reuters’ account discussed the strategic search context, but the reporting does not establish the current terms or status of Apple’s relationship with Google in 2026.

Talent and distribution
Apple might value Perplexity’s engineers, researchers, product managers, and experience operating an AI-search service as much as its consumer brand. Apple’s device ecosystem could offer a route to broad distribution, while Perplexity’s existing product could help Apple learn how people use conversational search. Those benefits would depend on retaining the team and integrating the service successfully.
What an acquisition would actually involve
A buyer would need to assess the whole business, not just the search interface. The potential assets and obligations are different from owning a standalone AI model:

- Product and users: the search interface, brand, and existing user relationships.
- Technology: web retrieval, crawling, ranking, citations, answer generation, and any models Perplexity owns. Outside model relationships would not automatically become Apple property.
- Commercial operations: subscriptions, enterprise arrangements, and other contracts, subject to their terms.
- People: engineering, research, and product talent whose retention could affect the value of the purchase.
- Risks and costs: publisher and copyright disputes, data-use questions, answer accuracy, infrastructure commitments, and the compute expense of serving searches at scale.
Apple would have to decide whether the product’s quality, economics, and legal position justified taking on those obligations. AI-generated search can misstate information; if Apple placed it in a first-party service, errors could become a reputational issue for Apple as well as Perplexity. Web-based answers also raise questions about attribution, licensing, and publisher relationships. These are diligence and integration risks, not evidence that regulators had opened a review of a specific transaction.
Why Apple might partner instead of buying
A partnership could let Apple test Perplexity’s search capabilities without purchasing the entire company or paying a strategic premium. Coverage reported that Apple and Perplexity had met multiple times about the startup’s technology and identified partnership as an alternative to a takeover. A commercial arrangement could give Apple a way to experiment while preserving the option to build more internally or work with other providers. Fortune’s report and MacRumors’ coverage describe that alternative.
| Path | Potential benefit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Acquire Perplexity | Greater control and direct access to its product, technology, and team. | High potential cost, integration and retention challenges, operating obligations, legal exposure, and possible regulatory scrutiny. |
| Partner | Test or deploy a capability with less upfront commitment and more flexibility. | Less control and exclusivity; continued reliance on an outside provider and the terms of the relationship. |
| Build internally | More control over architecture, privacy choices, and product direction. | Requires time, hiring, and substantial development and infrastructure work. |
| Invest without acquiring | Create a financial and strategic relationship without taking full ownership. | Investment alone does not guarantee control, exclusive access, or a product integration. |
| Use multiple providers | Offer flexibility and avoid dependence on a single AI provider. | More complexity in product design, privacy management, contracts, and quality control. |
Perplexity’s broad availability could itself be part of its appeal. Apple ownership might improve its reach on Apple devices but could complicate its position with users and partners on Android, Windows, or other platforms. Whether control is worth that trade-off depends on Apple’s goal: owning a differentiated service, securing technology and talent, or simply offering a useful search option.

What the $14 billion valuation does—and does not—mean
Bloomberg reported that Perplexity had raised funding at a $14 billion valuation in 2025. That is a private financing valuation, not a disclosed Apple offer, guaranteed sale price, revenue figure, or measure of profit or cash flow. A buyer could offer more, less, or nothing at all. The figure may serve as a reference point in negotiations, but it does not establish what Apple would have to pay.
Valuation also cannot answer whether the business is attractive on its own. A buyer would need to weigh user growth, query volume, subscriptions and enterprise demand against compute costs, the durability of its technology, dependence on third-party models or web sources, and the legal and commercial risks of AI search. Bloomberg also reported that Meta had discussed buying Perplexity before investing in Scale AI instead; that is context for interest in the company, not evidence that Apple would make a bid. Bloomberg’s report on the valuation and Meta discussions provides that context.
Would Perplexity be Apple’s biggest acquisition?
Apple’s reported record acquisition is Beats, bought for about $3 billion in 2014. At $14 billion, Perplexity’s reported financing valuation is roughly 4.7 times that amount. So a Perplexity purchase near that valuation would be Apple’s largest acquisition by a wide margin. The comparison is conditional: the reported talks did not establish an offer, a price, or a transaction. MacRumors and 9to5Mac make the comparison with Beats.

What would confirm a deal had moved beyond discussion?
Readers should distinguish evidence of strategic interest from evidence of a transaction. More meaningful signals would include a company announcement, credible reporting that Apple made a formal offer or entered negotiations, relevant regulatory filings, or a disclosed commercial partnership or investment. A Safari or Siri feature announcement could show product integration, but on its own it would not prove that Apple acquired Perplexity.
The June 2025 account establishes a possible strategic discussion, not a signed deal. Whether Apple wanted Perplexity’s search capability, its people, or both was not settled publicly; nor was a choice between acquisition, partnership, investment, or internal development.
