At the time, the reported price was $8 a month on the web and $11 a month through iOS. But “worldwide” did not mean every feature worked on every device or that every account could sign up immediately—and a blue checkmark no longer served as reliable proof of identity. These are historical launch details, not current X Premium pricing or policy.
What Twitter announced in March 2023
Twitter said people could subscribe to Twitter Blue globally on the web, iOS and Android. The announcement broadened access to a subscription that had first launched in late 2022 and then faced a pause and changes after paid checkmarks were used for impersonation. Contemporary coverage reported both the rollout and the platform’s warning that features could differ by platform. Engadget’s March 2023 coverage summarized the announcement.
For a personal-finance decision, the headline price was only part of the picture: billing channel affected the reported cost, while some benefits were advertised rather than fully delivered at launch.
What subscribers were offered—and what was uncertain

That distinction matters: a feature list is not a guarantee that each benefit was active for every subscriber on announcement day. Engadget’s reporting described features and launch caveats together, including platform differences and incomplete benefits.

The $8 and $11 figures are historical reported prices for the March 2023 rollout, not a current price quote. The gap between web and iOS was consistent with app-store billing differences, but the cited material does not establish a complete explanation of the pricing or whether taxes, annual billing, and local-currency rates applied in every market. Check the price shown before purchasing rather than assuming the U.S.-dollar figures applied everywhere.
Why “available worldwide” had limits
Twitter’s wording described the scope of the product launch, not guaranteed identical access in every country. The platform itself cautioned that not all features were available on all platforms. Country-specific payment support, app-store availability, local rules, device compatibility and account eligibility could all affect an individual signup.

New accounts could also face a waiting period. A contemporaneous secondary report said Twitter reserved the right to impose one and reported that the period had been reduced from 90 days to 30; treat that duration as reported rather than as a universal rule for every account. The report on the account waiting period reproduces the contemporaneous caveat.
What the blue checkmark meant during the transition
Before Elon Musk’s takeover, Twitter’s blue checkmark was generally associated with accounts that were notable and authenticated. Under the relaunched subscription model, paying for Twitter Blue could provide a blue checkmark, so the badge alone no longer answered whether an account’s identity had been independently established.

Twitter said it would begin removing legacy blue checkmarks on April 1, 2023. “Begin” is important: the announcement was a start date for the removal process, not confirmation that every old badge disappeared that day. The timing tied the global subscription push to a broader shift in how the platform displayed verification. Techmeme’s March 23 roundup covered the rollout alongside the planned legacy-checkmark change.
Individual subscriptions were not the same as organizational badges
Twitter also used distinct badge programs for organizations and institutions. Businesses could pursue gold checkmarks, while grey checkmarks were associated with governments, officials and certain institutions. These were separate from an individual’s Twitter Blue subscription and from the legacy verification program. Engadget reported that organizational or institutional applications involved additional information, such as government identification or a valid email address and an explanation of the applicant’s official role or function.

For a business or public body, an individual subscription was therefore not a substitute for the organization-focused route. A badge’s color and context mattered, and the personal subscription should not be treated as an organizational affiliation credential.

The initial November 2022 relaunch allowed paid accounts to obtain a checkmark that looked too much like legacy verification. Impersonators exploited that ambiguity, prompting Twitter to pause or restrict the offering and make changes before expanding it. The March 2023 release was a broader rollout after that troubled start, not the product’s first appearance.

How to judge whether it made financial sense
At launch, a subscription had a clearer case for someone who frequently posted and valued editing, undoing posts, longer updates, bookmarking tools or customization. A casual reader who rarely used those features had less reason to pay. The proposed visibility and advertising benefits deserve particular caution because contemporary reporting said they were incomplete or not fully delivered at rollout.
- Frequent poster: Weigh the practical value of editing and longer posts against the recurring charge.
- Brand or institution: Look at the separate organizational or institutional process rather than assuming an individual badge represents the organization.
- Seeking identity assurance: Do not use a blue checkmark alone as proof that an account is authentic.
- Comparing signup methods: Compare the checkout price on the web and in the app; the reported iOS price was higher than the web price in March 2023.
What these details do—and do not—say about X today
Twitter was later renamed X, and product names, subscription prices, benefits, eligibility rules and badge policies can change.
