Google Brings Buy Buttons to Gemini and AI Mode—But Not to Every Product

Google is bringing product discovery and checkout closer together in Gemini and AI Mode, but Buy buttons apply only to eligible products, merchants and markets.

Google is adding ways to move from product discovery to checkout in Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search. On eligible Gemini listings, shoppers can select Buy, review the order and pay with Google Pay without first visiting the retailer’s site. The feature is limited by merchant, product, account and market; other listings may still send shoppers to a retailer’s website.

What Google’s buy button does

Shopping through Google’s AI surfaces can mean several different things. A product recommendation or card is not itself a checkout option: a card may show product details and a retailer link without letting you buy inside Google.

  • Product discovery: Gemini or AI Mode suggests or compares products.
  • Product listing: A card shows details such as an image, price or retailer link.
  • Buy button: An eligible Gemini listing lets you start checkout from the conversation.
  • Google Pay checkout: For supported purchases, saved payment and shipping information can be used to complete checkout without leaving the experience.
  • Retailer-site checkout: Some listings still send you to the merchant’s website to finish the purchase.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai described buy buttons for Google surfaces including AI Mode and Gemini. Google’s step-by-step consumer instructions specifically document the Gemini web-app flow, so shoppers should not assume every Search result, AI Overview or product card has the same checkout controls. Google’s announcement and its Gemini shopping help page describe the distinction.

How to buy a product in Gemini

  1. Open the Gemini web app or another supported Gemini surface, then ask about a product or shopping need.
  2. Review the product listings and select one that suits you. Check the merchant and product details rather than treating an AI recommendation as a complete comparison.
  3. Select Buy if the listing offers it. If there is no Buy button, the item, merchant, account or market may not be eligible; a retailer-site link may be the only checkout route.
  4. Review the order details, including the item and the information used for the purchase.
  5. Select Pay with GPay to confirm an eligible Google Pay purchase. Google says saved payment information and a shipping address can be prefilled.
  6. Look for order confirmation and post-purchase follow-up from the retailer. Google’s documentation says the merchant handles those communications.

For a shopper, the practical benefit is fewer form fields and fewer steps between finding an item and ordering it. The final order details—not an earlier AI answer—are where to verify the product, price, shipping and other purchase terms.

Who can use Gemini shopping, and what is excluded?

Google’s Gemini help page lists requirements that apply to its documented shopping experience. You must be at least 18 and use a personal Google Account, not a work, school or supervised account. Keep Activity must be enabled, and Google Pay purchases require a valid payment method and shipping address saved to Google Pay. Availability also depends on the Gemini surface, merchant and eligible product.

Google lists shopping availability in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico and the United States. It lists English, French, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish among supported languages. These are the documented Gemini shopping markets and languages; they do not establish that every UCP checkout feature or merchant is available in each one. Check Google’s current availability and account requirements for changes.

Google identifies product restrictions including alcohol, tobacco, digital goods that require customization, items requiring special delivery and products requiring ID verification. A product may therefore appear in a shopping answer without being eligible for an in-Gemini purchase.

What Universal Commerce Protocol and Universal Cart mean

UCP connects merchant systems to Google’s AI shopping surfaces

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is intended to connect merchant commerce systems with consumer-facing surfaces such as Search and Gemini. It covers capabilities such as product discovery, cart and checkout operations, discounts, payment-handler discovery and order updates. Google describes the protocol as vendor-agnostic: the aim is to reduce the need for a different bespoke connection between each merchant and each shopping surface.

That does not make setup automatic. Google’s developer materials say the protocol is evolving, not every defined feature is available on Google surfaces, and merchants need approval for Google’s implementation. The UCP overview describes the intended design; the implementation guide lays out the merchant work.

Universal Cart is a related feature, not another name for checkout

Google announced Universal Cart on May 19, 2026, with an initial U.S. rollout across Search and Gemini planned for summer 2026. Google describes it as a cart that can gather products from Google surfaces, with YouTube also in scope and Gmail planned to follow. Its planned capabilities include tracking price changes and restocks, showing price-history information, identifying possible product incompatibilities, and surfacing merchant offers or payment perks. Depending on the item, checkout can use Google Pay or transfer the shopper to the retailer’s site. The announcement is on Google’s Universal Cart page.

Universal Cart and a Gemini Buy button are related parts of Google’s shopping push, but they are not interchangeable. A Buy button does not establish that every transaction is collected in Universal Cart, and Universal Cart does not mean every item uses one Google checkout.

Who sells the item—and who handles problems?

Google says the retailer remains the merchant of record. Google supplies the discovery and checkout interface, but the retailer remains the seller responsible for the transaction and fulfillment. Google has named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair, as well as Shopify merchants including Fenty and Steve Madden, as examples connected to its shopping efforts. Google’s examples are not a complete merchant list and do not mean every product from those companies supports checkout inside Google.

For shoppers, the merchant distinction matters after payment: look to the retailer for order confirmation, delivery questions, returns, warranty claims and customer service. The retailer’s terms govern the particular purchase, and the seller is also the party to check when verifying product authenticity or resolving a shipping dispute. Google’s statements about the merchant’s role appear in its NRF remarks; its Gemini shopping instructions say order confirmations and follow-up come from the merchant.

Payment options and personal-finance considerations

Google Pay can fill in saved payment and shipping details for supported purchases. That convenience means the shopper is relying on a Google account’s stored information as part of the transaction; use the review screen to check what is being charged and where the order will be sent.

Affirm announced on May 12, 2026, that its pay-over-time options would be integrated into Google Search, AI Mode and Gemini through Google Pay. Affirm said eligible shoppers would see eligibility results, payment schedules, total cost and end dates before committing. This is a payment-option rollout, not a promise that every shopper, product or merchant will see Affirm. If an installment option appears, assess its full repayment schedule and total cost against paying upfront and your budget before choosing it. See Affirm’s announcement.

What shoppers should check before confirming

  • Price and product: Confirm the final price, selected size or color, and exact item on the order review screen.
  • Seller: Identify the retailer that will fulfill the order; a Google interface does not make Google the seller.
  • Delivery and returns: Check shipping timing, delivery conditions and the retailer’s return policy before paying.
  • Checkout destination: Note whether payment remains in Google or continues on the merchant’s website.
  • Payment choice: If a financing option appears, review the displayed total cost and schedule rather than focusing only on the installment amount.
  • Recommendation limits: Treat AI comparisons as a starting point, not proof that results are exhaustive, neutral or the best available price.

What Google’s shift means for retailers

For retailers, the opportunity is to appear in a high-intent conversation and reduce checkout steps. Google has also described tools around promotion delivery and visibility on AI surfaces. For example, its Direct Offers program can surface promotions in AI Mode and Search and supports native checkout for UCP merchants. Google says it is rolling out AI performance insights in Merchant Center to help businesses compare brand visibility on AI surfaces; visibility reporting is not, by itself, proof of incremental sales or a ranking guarantee. Participation requires operational and technical readiness, not just having products listed in Google Shopping. Google’s materials describe a path involving Merchant Center, eligible product data, Google Pay setup, a UCP profile, checkout endpoints and order-status handling; account linking through OAuth is optional. Google approval is also required for its UCP implementation. Retailers need reliable product, inventory, shipping and returns information because those details shape the buying experience even when the transaction starts in an AI conversation.

UCP is intended to reduce one-to-one integration work, but it does not eliminate integrations or ongoing maintenance. Retailers remain responsible for fulfillment and customer support, while AI recommendations may present competing products alongside their own. Google’s visibility insights may help teams understand presence on AI surfaces, but should not be treated as sales attribution without separate evidence.

Why this is more than a new checkout button

Google is trying to keep more of the shopping journey—from discovery and comparison to cart and payment—within its own surfaces. The shift also changes the importance of product feeds, promotions and how brands appear in conversational answers. It is part of a broader competition among technology companies to bring shopping and checkout into AI experiences; the Associated Press has reported on that competitive context.

For shoppers, the interface may save time, but it does not remove the need to judge the seller, product and payment terms. For retailers, Google offers another route to discovery and conversion, with eligibility, integration work and continued merchant responsibilities attached.
