The soybean number was a pod count, not a yield estimate; both figures were in-season observations, not final harvest results.
What the Indiana crop tour reported
Reuters reported the Pro Farmer tour’s Indiana results on August 20, 2024. Scouts recorded 1,409.02 soybean pods per 3-foot-by-3-foot square. The report called it the highest Indiana count on the tour in 22 years, or since 2002.
For corn, the tour estimated a yield prospect of 187.54 bushels per acre. That was Indiana’s highest tour estimate in three years. These are distinct measurements: soybean pods counted in a defined area versus projected corn bushels per acre.
How Indiana’s figures compare
| Measure | 2024 Indiana tour figure | 2023 tour average | Three-year average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soybean pods per 3-by-3-foot square | 1,409.02 | 1,309.96 | 1,238.55 |
| Corn yield prospect, bushels per acre | 187.54 | 180.89 | 184.07 |
Reuters’ 2024 report said Indiana’s soybean pod count was 7.6% above its 2023 tour average. The corn estimate also exceeded both the 2023 tour average and three-year average shown above. The comparisons are tour figures, not comparisons with realized harvest yields.
#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
What the soybean pod count means—and what it does not
The soybean figure is an average count of pods in a 3-foot-by-3-foot (91-by-91-centimeter) square. It describes what scouts observed in sampled areas. It is not a statewide soybean yield forecast and cannot be converted directly into bushels per acre from the information reported.
The Reuters account does not provide a full sampling protocol or establish a specific tool for measuring the square. A measuring tape could be used to mark the dimensions for a demonstration, but that is not a tour-prescribed method.

What the tour said about Nebraska
The same Reuters report gave Nebraska a corn yield prospect of 173.25 bushels per acre, compared with 167.22 in the 2023 tour and a three-year average of 169.37. Nebraska’s soybean count was 1,172.48 pods per 3-by-3-foot square, versus 1,160.02 in the prior tour and a three-year average of 1,150.06. As with Indiana, the soybean figures are pod counts rather than yield projections.
Weather and the limits of an in-season outlook
Reuters reported that remnants of Hurricane Beryl brought timely rain in early July after Indiana had been abnormally dry. The tour’s outlook remained dependent on conditions through harvest. Brian Grete, identified by Reuters as Pro Farmer editor and tour leader, said: “They (farmers) are going to be really pleased with how the soybeans finish, if they have normal weather.” The conditional matters: the statement was not a guarantee of final yields.

The report placed the tour’s observations alongside the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s then-latest forecast for record U.S. corn and soybean yields. That was the contemporaneous context in August 2024, not a current USDA forecast.

- Use the soybean statistic as a sampled-area pod count, not a yield figure.
- Read 187.54 bushels per acre as a corn yield prospect from the tour, not a harvested result.
- Keep comparisons like-for-like: pod counts against pod counts, and corn bushels per acre against corn bushels per acre.
- The report does not establish final 2024 harvest outcomes or whether these in-season estimates proved accurate.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
