Amazon Web Services acquired CloudEndure in January 2019. Contemporary reporting estimated the deal at about $200 million, but AWS did not publicly confirm a purchase price. CloudEndure was not simply an AWS Backup vendor: it specialized in continuous server replication, disaster recovery and workload migration. Its product lineages continued as AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (DRS) and AWS Application Migration Service (MGN); the CloudEndure products themselves have since been retired or reached end of life.

The acquisition in brief

  • Buyer: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud-computing business.
  • Acquired: CloudEndure, an Israeli startup focused on disaster recovery and workload migration.
  • When: Contemporary reporting dated the deal to January 2019. AWS later described the acquisition as taking place in 2019.
  • Reported price: Approximately $200 million, according to TechCrunch’s January 8, 2019 report. That is a reported estimate, not a purchase price officially disclosed by AWS.

CloudEndure subsequently confirmed it had been acquired by AWS. The deal mattered because it brought AWS technology for moving and recovering whole server workloads, not just a conventional backup product.

What CloudEndure did

CloudEndure used block-level continuous replication to copy changes from physical, virtual and cloud-based servers into AWS. Its disaster-recovery service could replicate operating systems, configurations, applications, databases and data files to a lower-cost staging environment. When recovery was needed, customers could launch recovery machines on AWS rather than keep a full duplicate production environment running at all times. AWS described this operating model in its CloudEndure Disaster Recovery announcement.

Disaster recovery and migration were related, but different

  • Disaster recovery: Keep a replicated recovery environment ready and fail over when the primary system is disrupted. The aim is to meet defined recovery-point and recovery-time objectives: how much data loss and downtime an organization can tolerate.
  • Migration: Move a workload to AWS, usually as a planned transition rather than maintaining a standby copy for emergencies.

Both products used replication and automated machine conversion or orchestration, but a migration plan and a disaster-recovery plan have different operating, licensing, network and testing requirements. CloudEndure’s legacy product documentation describes its focus on recovery and migration.

Why AWS wanted the technology

Moving a legacy server estate to the cloud can involve many machines, dependencies and virtualization environments. CloudEndure offered a way to replicate workloads from physical data centers, VMware environments, private clouds and other public clouds, then launch them on AWS with less disruption than rebuilding each machine manually. The same capability could support disaster recovery for customers that wanted AWS to serve as a recovery destination.

The acquisition therefore addressed two enterprise barriers to cloud adoption: the effort of moving workloads and the challenge of keeping them available after an outage. Contemporary industry coverage also framed the deal in the context of AWS competing with Microsoft’s disaster-recovery and backup offerings, including Azure Site Recovery. TechTarget’s coverage discussed that competitive context.

CloudEndure was not the same thing as AWS Backup

Backup and continuous replication can both help restore workloads, but they address different risks. Backup services create recoverable copies on a schedule and commonly emphasize retention, lifecycle policies and point-in-time restore. Continuous replication is designed to keep a current copy of a running server available for relatively fast recovery or failover.

Need Better-aligned approach Why
Centralized, policy-based backups and retention for supported AWS resources AWS Backup It is designed for backup management, retention and recovery of supported resources. See AWS Backup.
Continuous replication and rapid recovery of whole servers into AWS AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery It is AWS’s successor service for disaster recovery based on CloudEndure DR technology. See AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery.
Lift-and-shift movement of servers into AWS AWS Application Migration Service It is the successor to CloudEndure Migration. See AWS Application Migration Service.

Replication is not a substitute for an immutable, long-retention backup archive. Corruption or malicious changes can be replicated too, so organizations need recovery-point selection and separate retention controls appropriate to their risks. Some organizations may use both a disaster-recovery service and backup protection because one supports rapid service restoration while the other preserves historical restore points.

How AWS integrated the products

AWS began bringing CloudEndure products into its portfolio while retaining the CloudEndure name for a period. CloudEndure Disaster Recovery was available through AWS Marketplace. On January 20, 2020, AWS announced an approximately 80% price reduction and moved the service to metered billing at $0.028 per server per hour—about $20.16 per server per month if billed continuously for a 30-day month—before AWS infrastructure costs. These are historical launch-era figures, not current CloudEndure or AWS DRS pricing. The announcement is documented in AWS’s January 2020 pricing notice.

What replaced CloudEndure

AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery for disaster recovery

AWS launched Elastic Disaster Recovery in late 2021 as the next generation of CloudEndure Disaster Recovery. AWS describes DRS as its recommended service for disaster recovery to AWS. It has direct AWS Management Console access and tighter integration with AWS services, but it should not be assumed to be identical to the legacy CloudEndure product. See the AWS DRS user guide and the CloudEndure DR end-of-life FAQ.

AWS Application Migration Service for migration

AWS MGN is the successor to CloudEndure Migration for lift-and-shift moves into AWS. AWS’s legacy documentation states that CloudEndure Migration reached end of life in all regions and recommends MGN for migrations to commercial AWS regions and GovCloud. MGN is aimed at moving servers; it is not a substitute for application modernization, refactoring or database conversion. See the CloudEndure Migration end-of-life notice.

CloudEndure product retirement timeline

Date What happened
January 2019 AWS acquired CloudEndure; contemporary reporting estimated the price at about $200 million, not an AWS-confirmed figure.
January 20, 2020 AWS announced the historical CloudEndure DR price reduction and metered-billing model.
Late 2021 AWS launched Elastic Disaster Recovery as the next generation of CloudEndure DR.
March 31, 2024 CloudEndure DR was discontinued in AWS commercial regions outside China and GovCloud.
September 29, 2025 CloudEndure DR was discontinued in AWS GovCloud.
August 29, 2026 AWS’s published schedule said remaining China-region licenses could operate until this date under stated conditions; new purchases and renewals were restricted.

The regional deadlines come from AWS’s CloudEndure DR end-of-life FAQ. They illustrate why “CloudEndure is discontinued” needs a product and region qualification: CloudEndure Migration is end of life, and CloudEndure DR has been retired on different schedules by region. The underlying product lineage continues in AWS services.

What existing customers should verify

Organizations still using CloudEndure should identify whether each deployment is for migration or disaster recovery, then plan against the corresponding AWS successor. A successful replication status alone does not prove that a complete application can recover.

  1. Inventory the workloads and product: Record source machines, operating systems, disks, applications, dependencies, regions and whether the use case is a one-time migration or ongoing failover.
  2. Set measurable recovery objectives: Define the maximum acceptable data loss (RPO) and downtime (RTO) for each application, rather than assuming the replication interval meets business needs.
  3. Validate the recovery environment: Check AWS account access and permissions, quotas, networking, routes, security groups, DNS, storage, monitoring and third-party software licensing.
  4. Test application behavior, not just server boot: Include authentication, databases, clustered services, external integrations, application transactions, backups and failback in recovery exercises.
  5. Keep backup requirements separate: Decide what retention and ransomware recovery require; replication alone does not establish that historical, clean restore points are available.

Failures can arise from blocked outbound network access, agent or disk constraints, omitted application dependencies, misconfigured recovery networking, exhausted quotas, or license checks that fail after launch. A recent recovery point may already contain corruption or ransomware changes. AWS’s legacy supported-operating-systems documentation includes product-specific historical constraints; do not treat those as current DRS requirements without checking current AWS documentation.

Choosing a current approach

  • Choose AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery when the target is rapid recovery of supported servers into AWS and an AWS-centered recovery strategy is acceptable. Review current service and infrastructure costs in the AWS disaster-recovery pricing information; do not use CloudEndure’s 2020 rate as a current quote.
  • Choose AWS Application Migration Service for a lift-and-shift server migration into AWS, not as a general-purpose modernization tool.
  • Choose AWS Backup or another backup-focused platform when scheduled protection, retention and point-in-time recovery are the primary needs.
  • Evaluate independent or other-cloud services when vendor-neutral or multi-cloud recovery is important. Azure Site Recovery, Google Cloud Backup and DR, Veeam and Druva address adjacent needs, but workload coverage, recovery architecture, licensing and costs differ; verify fit rather than assuming a direct one-for-one replacement.

For large, regulated or complex environments, an assessment should map application dependencies and recovery objectives before selecting or migrating a service. AWS’s end-of-life FAQ also lists AWS Partners that can assist with CloudEndure DR upgrade planning.
