Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon called the drama around Apple’s move to its own modem technology unwarranted. That does not mean the business impact is trivial: Apple has introduced its C1 modem, and Qualcomm said in July 2026 that revenue from Apple products would decline faster than it had expected. The transition is real, but it is not an immediate end to every Qualcomm-Apple relationship.
What Qualcomm’s CEO actually downplayed
In remarks reported on June 4, 2025, Amon said the “drama” surrounding Apple’s transition away from Qualcomm was unwarranted. His point was that Qualcomm had planned for Apple to develop its own modem and should not be treated as though the possibility were a surprise. The comments were about how to frame a known customer transition, not a claim that Apple’s business had no financial value. AppleInsider’s report on Amon’s comments provides the contemporaneous context.
That distinction matters to investors and industry watchers: a company can anticipate losing a customer’s chip orders and still face a meaningful revenue decline when those orders taper off. Amon’s reassurance is Qualcomm’s view of its preparedness; it is not evidence that the financial exposure has disappeared.
What Apple’s C1 modem does—and why it matters
Apple introduced C1 on February 19, 2025, in the iPhone 16e, calling it the first cellular modem designed by Apple. A modem manages a phone’s connection to cellular networks; it is separate from the A-series application processor that runs apps and other computing tasks. Apple’s iPhone 16e announcement describes the launch.

Building a modem involves more than designing a chip that can reach a high download speed. It requires support for radio standards, spectrum bands, carrier requirements and network conditions, as well as careful integration with antennas, power management and device software. Bringing that work in-house gives Apple more control over component integration and its product roadmap, and may reduce dependence on an outside supplier. Those are strategic advantages, not proof that C1 is faster or better than every Qualcomm modem.
The first C1-equipped phone was the iPhone 16e, a lower-priced model. That launch demonstrated Apple could ship its own modem in a commercial iPhone, but it did not establish that the entire iPhone lineup had switched. Apple later introduced the C1X in the iPhone Air. Apple says C1X is up to twice as fast as C1 and uses 30% less energy for the same cellular technologies; those are Apple’s stated comparisons, not independently verified results. Apple’s iPhone Air announcement sets out those claims.

How the transition was expected to unfold
Qualcomm’s chip-supply agreement and its modem-share expectations describe different things. The agreement covered Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems for Apple smartphone launches in 2024, 2025 and 2026; it did not say every model in those launches would use a Qualcomm modem. Qualcomm’s 2023 announcement states the scope of the supply agreement.
At a May 2025 investor conference, Amon described Qualcomm’s expected share of iPhone modem supply as approximately 70% for 2025 launches, 20% for 2026 launches and zero for 2027 launches. Those were Qualcomm’s expectations at the time, not a guarantee for each model or a confirmed account of what shipped. The conference transcript records the forecast.

By July 29, 2026, Qualcomm was warning that Apple-product revenue would fall faster than previously expected. That update makes the transition more immediate than the earlier share trajectory alone suggested. The report also cited supply constraints and other pressures, so the revenue warning should not be attributed solely to Apple’s C1. The July 2026 outlook report describes the warning.
Modem supply is not the same as patent licensing

- Modem-chip supply: Apple is moving at least some iPhone models to its own modem hardware, reducing Qualcomm’s role in that product category over time.
- Patent licensing: Qualcomm’s licensing arrangement is separate from chip purchases. Qualcomm’s 2024 annual-meeting transcript said the license agreement extended into 2027, beyond the announced chip-supply period. The transcript discusses both arrangements.
- Other components or business: A shift away from Qualcomm modems does not, by itself, establish that Apple has stopped using every Qualcomm component or ended every commercial interaction.
For that reason, Qualcomm’s earlier forecast of zero modem share for 2027 launches should not be read as a forecast of zero Apple-related revenue. Hardware sales and patent royalties have different sources and terms.

Apple’s modem orders have been an important part of Qualcomm’s handset business. As Apple replaces those chips, Qualcomm loses sales and some visibility into future demand. Apple also gains more control over component costs, integration and the timing of new features. The 2026 warning shows that declining Apple-related product revenue is an active business issue, not just a distant scenario.

Qualcomm’s counterargument is that it anticipated the change and is building business beyond smartphone modems. Amon has pointed to Android devices and opportunities in automotive, PCs, augmented-reality devices and other connected products. Reuters coverage carried by Investing.com discusses Qualcomm’s diversification plans. These markets may help offset lost Apple sales, but the cited outlook does not establish that they have fully replaced that revenue.
Whether Qualcomm is insulated depends on more than the headline modem-share forecast. The key questions are how quickly Apple expands its in-house modems across products and regions, how much Qualcomm content remains in particular devices, whether other businesses grow profitably enough to compensate, and how the shift affects margins. Patent licensing should be assessed separately from hardware revenue.
What the transition means for iPhone buyers
A phone’s modem can affect battery use, connection reliability, uplink performance, roaming and behavior in weak-signal areas, as well as peak download speeds. Real-world results also depend on the carrier, supported bands, antenna design, network congestion, firmware and region. A headline speed comparison alone cannot settle how two phones will perform in everyday use.
Because C1 first appeared in the iPhone 16e and C1X is a separate design used in the iPhone Air, buyers should check the exact model and regional specifications rather than assume every iPhone has the same modem. Apple’s C1X claims are useful statements of the company’s positioning, but they are not a direct comparison with a Qualcomm-equipped flagship tested under identical conditions.

Amon was trying to make Apple’s modem transition sound planned rather than existential for Qualcomm. Apple’s C1 made the shift concrete, while Qualcomm’s July 2026 revenue warning showed that its effects are arriving faster than expected. The clearest reading is a staged hardware transition with model-by-model variation—not an overnight break, and not necessarily the end of Qualcomm’s licensing relationship with Apple.
