The May 2024 report described Microsoft’s effort to build more of its own AI technology; in August 2025, the company introduced MAI-1-preview for public evaluation and selected Copilot uses. By June 2026, MAI had grown into a family of models. For consumers, investors and businesses, the important story is Microsoft diversifying its AI capabilities while continuing to work with OpenAI—not a proven ChatGPT replacement or an end to that partnership.
What was Microsoft’s MAI-1?
MAI-1 was the name given to an in-development Microsoft language model in a May 6, 2024 report by The Information. The report said it was being developed under Mustafa Suleyman, who joined Microsoft after co-founding DeepMind and leading Inflection AI. It described MAI-1 as a Microsoft project distinct from Inflection’s earlier models, though Microsoft had recruited Inflection staff and obtained rights to its intellectual property.
The report said Microsoft might preview the model at its Build developer conference if development progressed sufficiently. That was a possibility, not a confirmed launch date. The distinction matters: a model under internal development, a preview for developers, public testing, deployment inside a product and a standalone chatbot are different stages. In May 2024, MAI-1 was at the first of those stages, not a consumer ChatGPT alternative.
What the reported size did—and did not—mean
The Information estimated MAI-1 at roughly 500 billion parameters. That was a reported estimate, not a confirmed final architecture or an official model-card specification. Parameter count alone cannot show whether a model is better: training data, architecture, post-training, tool use, context length, reliability, safety, speed and operating cost all affect performance.

Why would Microsoft build its own models while working with OpenAI?
Microsoft has several reasons to develop models in-house: more control over technology, the ability to tune models for its products, potential management of inference costs, and less dependence on any single supplier. Owning more of the stack can also strengthen Microsoft’s negotiating position and give Azure customers a broader choice of models.
Those motives do not mean Microsoft had stopped using OpenAI. The companies have continued to describe an active partnership, including in January 2025, October 2025 and April 2026. The more accurate reading is diversification: Microsoft can build its own models, use OpenAI technology and offer other providers’ models at the same time.

Microsoft described Copilot as model-diverse in its March 2026 announcement. That strategy lets the company select among models for different tasks instead of making every product depend on one model family. It also means that seeing Copilot use a Microsoft model does not establish that OpenAI models have been removed from Copilot.
How did the MAI-1 story develop?
| Date | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| May 6, 2024 | The Information reported that Microsoft was developing MAI-1, including an estimated scale of roughly 500 billion parameters. | An in-development project, not a consumer launch; the size was an attributed estimate. |
| August 2025 | Microsoft introduced MAI-1-preview, with public evaluation on LMArena and plans for selected Copilot text tasks, according to Windows Central. | A preview and limited product use, not a replacement for every Copilot model. |
| June 2026 | Microsoft announced seven in-house MAI models across several capabilities in its MAI portfolio announcement. | The effort had broadened beyond one text model. |
What was MAI-1-preview?
MAI-1-preview was the later public-facing model associated with the MAI-1 effort. Microsoft presented it as an in-house text model for evaluation and selected uses, rather than a complete consumer assistant comparable as a product to ChatGPT. The preview was available for community testing through LMArena, and Microsoft planned to use it for certain text-based Copilot tasks, as Windows Central reported.

Coverage of the announcement relayed Microsoft’s figure of approximately 15,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs used to train and post-train MAI-1-preview. That figure refers to the later preview, not the 2024 report’s estimated parameter count; the two numbers describe different things and should not be conflated. The available reporting does not establish that MAI-1-preview replaced OpenAI models across Copilot.
What does the MAI family include now?
By June 2026, Microsoft was describing MAI as a broader portfolio, not a single ChatGPT-like product. Its announcement covered seven in-house models spanning reasoning, coding, image generation, voice generation and transcription. The Microsoft AI model archive lists models including MAI-Thinking-1, MAI-Code-1, MAI-Image-2.5, MAI-Voice-2 and MAI-Transcribe-1.5.
Microsoft said the models were being integrated across Copilot, Bing, PowerPoint, Azure Speech, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, with some available through Microsoft Foundry. Availability depends on the particular model and product; an integration into a Microsoft service does not necessarily mean users can select or call that model directly. The Microsoft Community Hub announcement describes Foundry access and product integrations.

The available evidence does not support a blanket verdict. The 2024 report did not provide a complete public benchmark comparison, and later results for other MAI models cannot automatically be assigned to MAI-1 or MAI-1-preview. A fair comparison needs the same benchmark version, prompting approach, tool access, context, inference settings, model versions and test date; independent testing is useful where available.

For a user or business, raw model scores are only part of the decision. A model also needs to be reliable in the intended workflow, fast enough, affordable at the relevant usage level, and supported by appropriate privacy and governance controls. Integration into Microsoft products may matter more to some customers than a narrow benchmark lead.
What should consumers, developers and businesses expect?
Consumers and Microsoft 365 users
Most people are more likely to encounter MAI models indirectly through Microsoft products than by subscribing to a standalone service called MAI-1. Copilot can use different models, and availability may vary by feature, account, region and date. Microsoft has not established MAI-1 as a separate downloadable or subscription chatbot.
Developers
Developers should distinguish product access from model access. A model powering a Copilot feature is not necessarily available through a stable API. For direct deployment, check the relevant model listing and terms in Microsoft Foundry for availability, region, versioning, pricing and service limits; the material cited here does not establish current MAI API prices.
Businesses and investors
For an enterprise, the practical questions are governance, data handling, regional availability, support, model choice and total cost—not just whether Microsoft has an in-house model. For investors, MAI signals an attempt to own more of the AI stack and reduce concentration risk, but the project’s existence alone does not demonstrate lower costs, higher margins, or a financial return. Those outcomes depend on adoption, performance and operating economics, for which no conclusion follows from the original project report.

Bottom line: a strategic alternative, not an instant ChatGPT replacement
MAI-1’s significance is that Microsoft sought the option to build and deploy more of its own AI technology while preserving its relationship with OpenAI. The project progressed from a reported internal model to a preview and then into a wider MAI family. That is evidence of diversification—not proof that MAI-1 outperformed ChatGPT, replaced OpenAI throughout Copilot, or became a standalone chatbot.
