The available global estimate does not verify a 100% increase in crypto employment over the latest four-year period. The traceable comparison is historical: K33 estimated about 73,000 people working in crypto in 2019 and nearly 190,000 in July 2023, an increase of nearly 160% as reported by Cointelegraph. K33 also estimated that employment peaked above 210,000 around 2021 before falling by July 2023.
What the figures say about crypto employment growth
The headline claim needs a time-period qualification. The clearest global comparison in the available sources runs from 2019 to July 2023—not across the latest four years. It suggests substantial growth over that earlier period, but not steady, uninterrupted expansion.
| Measure | Estimate | Scope and source |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto workers in 2019 | About 73,000 | Global industry estimate attributed to K33 and reported by Cointelegraph in 2023. |
| Estimated employment peak around 2021 | Slightly above 210,000 | Global estimate by K33 Research in its 2023 report, The Emerging Crypto Industry. |
| Crypto workers in July 2023 | Nearly 190,000 | Global estimate by K33 Research in its 2023 report. |
Comparing roughly 73,000 workers in 2019 with nearly 190,000 in July 2023 yields the “nearly 160%” growth figure used by Cointelegraph. The estimate then fell from the peak above 210,000 around 2021 to nearly 190,000 by July 2023. That arc matters: a large net increase across 2019–2023 can coexist with a later decline.
Why this does not establish a 100% increase in the latest four years
A four-year growth claim needs comparable starting and ending counts for the same geography, industry definition, and employment category. The available sources do not provide an equivalent global direct-employment series for the latest four-year window. The 2019–2023 figures cannot be relabeled as a current four-year trend, and the separate U.S. figures published in 2026 are not a like-for-like global endpoint.

How to interpret the estimates
K33’s global estimate
K33’s 2023 report presents an estimate rather than a complete official labor census. Its method combines direct mappings, iterative internet searches with manual oversight, and extrapolation from partial observations; the report also describes an adjustment for undercoverage. Because the estimate includes generalization beyond observed information, it should be read as an informed industry estimate, not a precise count of every crypto employer and worker.
The 2026 U.S. employment figures
In an article published on 10 August 2026, the National Crypto Association (NCA) reported about 34,000 direct jobs at U.S. crypto companies. It also reported a broader total of 232,000 U.S. jobs when supplier jobs and jobs supported by worker spending are included. The NCA says the report was developed with Pragmatic Policy Group. The broader total is an employment-impact measure, not a count of direct crypto-company employees, and its U.S. scope cannot be appended to K33’s global series as a new comparable data point.

- They show: K33’s estimated global crypto workforce grew substantially between 2019 and July 2023, with an estimated peak above 210,000 around 2021.
- They also show: the July 2023 estimate was below that peak.
- They do not establish: that global crypto employment increased 100% during the latest four years.
- They do not make interchangeable: a global estimate of industry workers and a U.S. total that includes supplier and worker-spending effects.
Accordingly, the best-supported statement is that K33 estimated nearly 160% growth in global crypto employment from 2019 to July 2023, followed by a decline from the estimated 2021 peak. A separate, comparable global count is needed to quantify growth over a more recent four-year period.
