T-Mobile Names Jon Freier COO; Redfin Veteran Joins RentSpree as Microsoft and Amazon Leaders Depart

T-Mobile appointed Jonathan “Jon” Freier chief operating officer effective December 5, 2025, as former COO Srini Gopalan moved into the CEO role. The December 2025 Pacific Northwest tech roundup also reported Alex Berezhnyy’s move from Redfin to RentSpree as CTO, Paige Johnson’s departure from Microsoft, and exits by two Amazon and AWS leaders. These are separate personnel changes, not evidence of a coordinated industry trend.

T-Mobile appoints Jon Freier COO

T-Mobile’s SEC-filed Form 8-K says Jonathan A. Freier became COO effective December 5, 2025. He succeeded Srini Gopalan in that role after Gopalan moved to CEO; Freier did not replace him as CEO.

Freier’s appointment was an internal promotion. Before becoming COO, he was president of T-Mobile’s Consumer Group, overseeing consumer marketing, digital excellence, retail sales and distribution, customer care, strategic planning and other operational functions. He began his telecommunications career at Western Wireless in 1994, a predecessor business that later became part of T-Mobile.

The filing set out Freier’s initial 2026 compensation terms: a $1 million annual base salary, a target short-term incentive opportunity of at least 200% of eligible annual earnings, and annual long-term incentive awards with a target grant-date value of at least $9 million. T-Mobile’s 2026 proxy materials also list him as COO, confirming he remained in the role at the time of those materials.

Redfin engineering veteran joins RentSpree

GeekWire reported on December 10, 2025, that Alex Berezhnyy joined RentSpree as CTO. He had spent more than a decade at Redfin, most recently as vice president of engineering, and earlier held software-development-management roles at Amazon. The appointment is a job move, not a Redfin partnership or acquisition.

RentSpree provides digital tools for rental applications, tenant screening, lease documents, payments and related property-management workflows. The company’s announcement framed Berezhnyy’s technical leadership and AI as relevant to the future of renting. That is the company’s stated hiring rationale, not independent evidence of AI results or a demonstrated strategy. GeekWire has described RentSpree as profitable, a characterization attributed to its reporting rather than a public financial disclosure.

Julien Ellie resigns from AWS

Julien Ellie resigned from his role as a senior principal engineer at Amazon Web Services after about 15 years at Amazon. He had previously spent nearly a decade at Microsoft. In a LinkedIn post cited by GeekWire, Ellie criticized what he saw as increasing bureaucracy and said Amazon’s culture no longer matched the builder mindset he valued. That is his personal assessment, not an independently established finding about AWS as a whole.

Jonathan Assayag leaves Amazon’s smart-eyewear work

Jonathan Assayag left an Amazon general manager and director role connected to the company’s smart-eyewear program after more than nine years at Amazon. His work included Echo Frames and Smart Delivery Glasses. In his LinkedIn announcement, he described the projects as “zero-to-one” efforts involving ambient computing, voice AI and AI-assisted workflows. GeekWire reported in December 2025 that he had not announced his next move. His departure alone does not establish the performance or future of Amazon’s eyewear efforts.

Other Pacific Northwest personnel moves

GeekWire’s December 10, 2025, roundup also reported these appointments and role changes. Except where noted, the roundup is the cited source for the announcements and career details.

  • WayTrade: James Newell became CFO at the commodity-trading company, which focuses on renewable fuels including sustainable aviation fuel. Newell previously was a general partner at Voyager Capital and was expected to work remotely from Seattle.
  • Gravyty: Lisa Haubenstock became chief customer officer, joining from Truckstop. Her earlier experience included Amazon and Everfi.
  • WatchMeGrow: Bobby Franzo became CEO after founding PB&J TV, which merged with WatchMeGrow earlier in 2025. John Lewison, who had led the company for 24 years, moved from CEO to board member and adviser.
  • CreateMe: Nick Chope was promoted to chief engineer and head of manufacturing; his background included Microsoft and Apple. Natasha Chand became executive adviser after serving as global CEO of Amazon Softlines Private Label.
  • Adora: Lauren Weinberg became a board adviser. Her previous leadership roles included Peloton Interactive, Square and Yahoo. Adora also lists the appointment on its news page.

What is confirmed—and what the roundup does not establish

The T-Mobile appointment and effective date are supported by a public SEC filing, and the 2026 proxy materials confirm Freier’s continued COO role at that time. The other changes above were reported by GeekWire, often based on company or individual LinkedIn announcements; Adora separately lists Weinberg’s appointment on its company news page. The roundup was published December 10, 2025, so it records announcements from that period rather than establishing that every person still holds the listed role today.

The moves span a public telecom company, major technology employers and smaller organizations. They are useful as a personnel ledger for the regional tech community, but the reporting does not show that the changes are connected or that the departures signal wider problems at Microsoft or Amazon.
