It lets you catalog coins, attach photographs, record purchases and other collection details, organize wish and selling lists, and create reports or exports. It is free and open source, with a local database at its center. It can store prices you enter, but it does not provide a catalog of current market prices or verify a coin’s value.
What is OpenNumismat?
OpenNumismat is a desktop application for building and managing your own collection database. Its purpose is broader than identifying a coin: you can maintain records, photographs, acquisition details, catalog references and notes, then search, report on or export that information. The project describes the application as free and open source under GPLv3. It is built with Python and PySide6 and uses SQLite for collection data. The official OpenNumismat site has downloads and a feature list.
The project says the software can also be adapted to collections of banknotes, stamps, postcards, medals, badges and models, as well as home inventories. Custom fields make it possible to record specialist information, though that flexibility does not mean built-in reference coverage is equally complete for every country, period or collecting niche.
What can you record and do with it?
Collection details and custom fields
The project lists more than 80 customizable fields. Depending on what you collect and how you configure the database, records can cover descriptive details such as denomination, date, mint, metal, variety and condition; collection details such as purchase, sale, transfer, seller and storage location; and reference details such as catalog numbers. Notes and custom lists can capture information that does not fit your standard fields.

Keep distinct kinds of information distinct. A coin’s descriptive details are not the same as your own condition assessment, a catalog reference or a valuation. If you record a grade, note whether it is owner-assigned, dealer-assigned or certified, and identify the grading scale when relevant.
Photographs
OpenNumismat’s feature list says you can attach up to 11 photographs to a coin. Images can be added from a file or clipboard, downloaded from a web URL, or captured through supported camera, webcam or USB-microscope workflows; an image editor is also included. Pictures can document the obverse and reverse, edge, holder, variety details, damage or toning, and the coin’s condition when cataloged. They are useful records, but a photograph does not by itself establish authenticity, grade or sale value.
Finding and organizing records
Grouping, filters, sorting, customizable lists and batch editing help turn a growing inventory into something searchable. For example, you could filter by country, acquisition year, grade or storage location; find duplicates; or review records on a wish or selling list. The practical value of these tools depends on entering information consistently—such as using the same country names and grading conventions throughout the collection.

Reports, exports and reference imports
The official feature list says reports can be generated or saved as HTML, PDF or Microsoft Word documents. Customized lists can be exported to Excel, HTML or CSV. These options can help with recordkeeping, insurance documentation, estate planning, sales or moving data elsewhere. Export periodically rather than relying on a single application database as the only copy of important records.
OpenNumismat also lists search and import connections to Colnect and the American Numismatic Society collections database. Imported catalog descriptions and numbers are reference material, not an appraisal; online data can be incomplete, use different conventions or be subject to access and licensing limits.
Does OpenNumismat provide coin values?
No built-in market-price catalog is established by the project. The official FAQ says OpenNumismat does not have catalogs with market prices. You can enter a purchase price, your own estimated value or a catalog reference, but the software does not thereby establish what a particular coin would sell for now.

For a useful record, attach a date, currency, source and grade basis to each valuation. A purchase price is not necessarily current value; a catalog figure is not necessarily a realizable sale price; and melt value does not account for every numismatic factor. For high-value coins, retain invoices, certification numbers, auction references and professional appraisal records separately. OpenNumismat can organize those details, but it is not an authentication or appraisal service.
Is it free, and where is the data stored?
The project describes OpenNumismat as free and open source, with source code under GPLv3. That means there is no stated purchase price for the application; it does not mean every catalog, third-party service or support option is free, nor that market data is bundled with it. The project accepts donations and invites bug reports, translations, feature suggestions and contributions.

Which systems and versions does it support?
The official download information checked on August 18, 2026 listed version 1.10.6, released April 17, 2026, as the stable desktop release. It listed Windows 10 and later, macOS 15 and later (with Intel and Apple Silicon packages), and Linux options including Debian/Ubuntu packages, Flatpak and Snap; older-system builds were also listed. Requirements and downloads can change, so check the official download page for the package that matches your operating system before installing.
OpenNumismat Web and an Android app are also listed by the project. Treat these as additional ways to view or access a collection, not as proof that a phone offers the same complete editing workflow as the desktop application. The older OpenNumismat Mobile page is marked deprecated.
How should you set up a collection?
- Install the appropriate release. Use the official download page to select your operating system and, where offered, installer or portable build. On macOS, select Intel or Apple Silicon; on Linux, choose the applicable package.
- Create a collection database and decide on conventions. Before entering many records, determine how you will name countries, record dates and mints, identify currencies, and describe condition. Configure the fields and lists you will actually use.
- Enter one or two test coins. Include an ordinary coin and, if relevant, a more complex example such as a variety or certified coin. Check that your chosen fields capture the distinctions you need.
- Add photographs and provenance. Start with obverse and reverse images, then add edge, holder or detail photographs where useful. Record acquisition date, seller or source, purchase price and currency, and physical storage location.
- Add references and value notes carefully. Record catalog numbers when known. Keep estimated values separate from purchase prices and include the source and date for each valuation.
- Check the records with filters and a test export. Use search, sorting and reports to spot missing or inconsistent entries. Export a small report to PDF, HTML, Excel or CSV and confirm it contains the fields you expect.
- Back up before scaling up. Preserve the database and image files together. Keep a local copy and a separate physical backup; for a valuable collection, consider an encrypted or geographically separate copy. Test restoring a backup on another device rather than assuming it will work.
Can you import a collection from another system?
The project lists imports from Excel, Colnect, Numista, CoinManage, Collection Studio 3.65, uCoin.net, Tellico and CoinSnap. Support for a source does not guarantee that every custom field, image, date, currency, grade or character will transfer correctly. The official site notes that importing from CoinManage may require the Microsoft Access Database Engine, Microsoft Access or another program providing an ODBC Microsoft Access driver.

- Two Pocket Sizes for Common Coins: 240 pockets suit coins up to about 30mm and 60 larger pockets suit coins up to about 38mm; not for most silver dollars, Silver Eagles or oversized challenge coins
- Clear Pockets for Front-and-Back Viewing: Transparent sleeves let you see both sides without removing each coin, while pocket flaps help reduce shifting during normal handling
- Compact 300-Pocket Coin Book: 15 pages provide 300 total pockets in a shelf-friendly format for sorting a growing collection at home, on a desk or in a drawer
- PU Cover for Everyday Storage: Faux-leather PU cover gives the album a clean, giftable look and helps shield the pages from everyday scuffs and dust; clear sleeves keep collections easier to browse
- Easy to Organize and Carry: Keep coins grouped by country, year, denomination or theme, then place the compact album in a backpack or travel bag for clubs, school projects, swaps or visits
- Export your collection from the original service and keep that export unchanged.
- Make a separate backup copy before importing.
- Import a small sample first and inspect photographs, image paths, accented or non-Latin text, dates, currencies, grades and catalog numbers.
- Check for duplicates, missing fields and changed values before importing the full collection.
- Keep the original system until you have audited the migration and confirmed your backup restores correctly.
Imports from online services also depend on their formats, access policies and connections remaining compatible. A local copy helps you retain your own records; it does not guarantee permanent access to a third-party catalog or its images.
How does it compare with other ways to catalog coins?
| Option | What it emphasizes | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OpenNumismat | Free, open-source, local collection management with customizable fields, photos and reports. | You manage backups and value research; it does not include a market-price catalog. |
| Numista | Online catalog and collection-management features, with community and browser access. OpenNumismat lists Numista as an import source. | More online and catalog-centered; it may be less suitable if you want a fully local workflow. See Numista and its API documentation. |
| CoinManage | A commercial coin database with value-related features; the Mac listing also describes certified-coin and bullion tracking. | It is a paid alternative rather than a free, open-source local cataloging tool. The available listing does not establish a dependable current price for every edition. See the Mac App Store listing. |
| Collectify Collectors’ Edition | A paid general-collectibles database with coin templates as well as templates for other collecting categories. | It is broader than a coin-focused workflow and is not open source. The price displayed on its shop page can change; check the official shop for current terms. |
| Spreadsheet | A simple, flexible inventory that you can shape yourself. | You must build specialized fields, image handling, reports and collection workflows yourself. |
Choose based on how you want to work, not on an assumption that any database can value or authenticate every coin. Numista is a reasonable direction if online reference lookup and community features are central; a spreadsheet may be enough for a small, simple inventory. CoinManage may suit readers seeking commercial database and value-related tools, while Collectify may fit people cataloging many kinds of objects. These differences do not establish that any product provides a guaranteed appraisal or sale price.
Who is OpenNumismat best suited to?
- Good fit: collectors who want a free, customizable catalog; detailed records and photographs; offline access; local control of their data; or a system they can adapt beyond coins.
- Consider another approach: collectors whose main requirement is automatic market-price updates, a ready-made online catalog, automatic cloud synchronization, managed backups, a marketplace, or a phone-only workflow.
- Plan for the extra work: a local database gives you control, but you must maintain backups, organize image files and decide how to access the collection across devices.
What records should you protect?
A collection database can reveal more than coin descriptions: it may include estimated values, home storage locations, purchase history, insurance notes and seller details. Avoid publishing sensitive fields in public exports, and secure both the computer and backup copies. Make sure photographs are preserved alongside the database, then test a restoration so you know the records and images can be recovered.
