The satellite-broadband program was later renamed Amazon Leo, but the appointment was made under the Project Kuiper name.
What happened when Chris Weber joined Project Kuiper?
GeekWire reported on August 5, 2024, that Weber had moved from GitLab to Amazon’s satellite-internet business as vice president of sales and marketing. Weber confirmed his first day at Amazon in a LinkedIn post, thanking GitLab for his time there. The move appeared in GeekWire’s recurring Tech Moves coverage of Pacific Northwest personnel changes.
The title and announcement are documented in GeekWire’s report and Weber’s post. Neither establishes Amazon’s specific hiring rationale.
Who is Chris Weber?
Weber is a technology-industry sales and business-development executive. Before joining Amazon, he had become GitLab’s chief revenue officer in July 2023. His career also included a chief business officer role at UiPath, an executive vice president role at Nokia, and more than 24 years at Microsoft, where he held several corporate vice president positions, according to GeekWire.

That background is relevant to a connectivity business because selling a network involves more than building it: customers, partners, distribution, and a service offer all have to come together. That is an interpretation of how his experience fits the role, not a stated explanation from Amazon.
What was Project Kuiper building?
Project Kuiper was Amazon’s planned low-Earth-orbit broadband network. Its intended system combined satellites in orbit, ground infrastructure and network-management systems, and customer terminals. Amazon described potential use across homes, businesses, governments, schools, health facilities, telecommunications providers, and communities with limited conventional connectivity. Its network overview and AWS explanation also described enterprise connectivity and private-network use cases.
In August 2024, GeekWire reported that Kuiper expected to begin offering broadband service to customers in 2025. Amazon separately said it expected beta testing in the second half of 2024 with early partners NTT, Verizon, and Vodafone. Those were forward-looking expectations: testing or a pilot is not the same as general availability, and launching satellites does not by itself establish that a commercial service is broadly operational. GeekWire also reported that more than 2,000 people worked on the program at Seattle-area locations in 2024; that is a dated staffing figure, not a current headcount.

Why a sales and marketing role mattered
A satellite network needs a path from technical capability to paying customers. For Kuiper, that meant pursuing more than household broadband: enterprise and government buyers, telecom partners, and specialized markets such as aviation could require distinct distribution, integration, and service arrangements. Amazon’s AWS material discussed enterprise and telecommunications uses, including secure connectivity and private networks.

That does not prove he was hired to solve a particular sales challenge or to beat a named competitor; Amazon’s stated hiring rationale is not established by the cited announcements.

Satellite deployment and commercial timing
In April 2025, Amazon launched its first full-scale batch of 27 Kuiper satellites and said it expected to begin delivering service to customers later that year. A launch is a deployment milestone, not evidence that all customers could then sign up for a complete, broadly available service. Amazon’s later network overview said an enterprise preview began in November 2025 and described a wider rollout planned for 2026 as more satellites added coverage and capacity.

The Amazon Leo name
On November 13, 2025, Amazon announced that Project Kuiper had been renamed Amazon Leo. The company said the name change did not alter the program’s mission; Amazon Leo is the same satellite-network program, not a separate successor. The historical 2024 appointment is properly described using the name Project Kuiper. Amazon’s rebrand announcement explains the change.
Partnerships beyond home broadband
Amazon’s commercial plans also extended to aviation. It announced a JetBlue partnership for inflight connectivity beginning in 2027. Separately, Airbus and Amazon announced plans to make the network available through Airbus’ HBCplus inflight-connectivity program. In the April 2025 Airbus announcement, Weber was identified as Project Kuiper’s vice president of sales and marketing.
What is known about Weber’s current title?
The Airbus announcement confirms Weber held the vice president of sales and marketing title in April 2025. His public LinkedIn profile shows continuing association with Amazon Leo activity, but the available profile material does not clearly establish his current title. It is therefore safer to treat the VP title as documented for the 2024 appointment and April 2025 attribution rather than assert it as definitive in 2026.
