Amazon’s 2022 Facial-Recognition Seller Verification Test: What Sellers Should Know Now

Amazon’s facial-recognition seller-verification announcement was real, but it dates to November 15, 2022—not a new 2026 launch. Amazon’s current documentation says facial recognition remains an optional identity-verification method in some seller-registration flows; applicants may instead be offered video verification with an Amazon associate. The choice of method can depend on the account and marketplace, and identity verification itself is still required.

What Amazon announced in 2022

On November 15, 2022, Amazon announced a voluntary test for prospective sellers in the United States. The company said it aimed to make onboarding more efficient while maintaining identity checks. The facial-recognition path was an alternative to a video call with a human reviewer, not a requirement for every seller. GeekWire’s report of the announcement described the initial test and its safeguards.

The test combined a government-ID image, a face image, liveness detection to help determine whether the applicant was physically present, and checks for document forgery. Machine-learning systems compared the applicant’s face with the photograph on the ID. Amazon said it would manually review the system’s decisions during the test and expected to notify applicants within a few days.

How the process is used now

Amazon later described extending the optional experience to Australia, Canada, and Singapore as well as the United States. That announcement did not establish availability in every Amazon marketplace. Amazon’s Singapore seller blog retained the video-call process as an alternative.

Amazon’s current facial-data privacy policy says facial-recognition verification may be offered “in some cases.” Its U.S. registration guide describes two routes: take a photo of your face and ID, or join a video call with an Amazon associate. Amazon’s global-selling FAQ distinguishes the photo route, which uses facial recognition, from video reviewed by an associate.

In practice, the photo path asks the applicant to allow camera access and capture their face and ID. Facial measurements are extracted and compared with the ID photograph, while liveness checks help detect a photograph or other spoof. The application then awaits verification. The description of manual review and notification within a few days applied to the original test; Amazon’s current public pages do not promise that same review procedure or timing for every application.

What sellers may need to submit

Amazon’s U.S. registration guide lists a government-issued ID and proof of residential or business address, such as a bank or credit-card statement dated within the previous 180 days. Applicants may then be asked for a face-and-ID photo or a video call. Amazon says documents should be clear, high-quality color images showing all four corners and legible text; it warns against screenshots and blurry images.

The precise checklist can vary by marketplace, business structure, applicant’s role, and any additional compliance review. Amazon says an authorized business representative may complete verification in some circumstances; its global-selling FAQ notes that the representative may need both their own ID and the business-license holder’s ID. Follow the instructions shown in the relevant Seller Central flow rather than assuming one country’s checklist applies everywhere.

Is facial recognition mandatory?

No. Amazon’s policy says the facial-recognition route is optional and that an applicant may exit before completing image capture and be redirected to video verification. Amazon says no biometric data is created through that facial-recognition process if the applicant exits before capture.

That does not make identity checks optional. Amazon may still require identity documents, video review, or additional evidence to approve or reactivate an account. The available evidence does not show that all existing sellers are routinely asked to complete facial recognition, or that every applicant in every marketplace receives the same choice.

What data Amazon says it collects and retains

Amazon says the facial-verification process can collect images of the applicant’s face and government-issued ID, plus facial measurements derived from those images. Amazon notes that the measurements may count as biometric data under some jurisdictions’ laws. It says the data is used to verify identity, assess whether the applicant is a live person and whether the face appears to match the ID photo, and prevent or detect fraud—not to develop or improve unrelated technologies, products, or services.

Amazon’s retention statements distinguish extracted facial data from the source images:

  • Facial data: Amazon says it may retain this for up to two years, as required by applicable laws.
  • Source images: Images used to create facial data may be kept longer when required for legal compliance.
  • Provider-held images: An authorized service provider may retain source images for up to 29 days for audit purposes. Amazon says providers do not retain the facial data itself.

Amazon says it may collect facial data directly using Rekognition and other technologies, or authorize third-party providers to collect it using their own technology. Its policy names Persona Identities, Inc., or its affiliates, as an authorized provider. Amazon says providers may process the data only to deliver identity-verification services to Amazon and may not sell it or share it outside Amazon except where legally required.

Amazon has said test images were encrypted in transit and at rest. Its current policy says Amazon and providers use protections at least as strong as those applied to other confidential and sensitive data, with access limited to authorized employees. These are Amazon’s stated safeguards and policy commitments, not an independent security audit. Encryption also does not eliminate questions about collection, retention, access, accuracy, or applicable legal rights.

Why Amazon uses identity checks

Amazon presents seller verification as part of its effort to deter fraudulent accounts, counterfeit activity, and other abuse while protecting customers and legitimate sellers. The company says new sellers must complete verification before selling, and describes a broader system combining document-forgery detection, image and video checks, machine learning, behavioral signals, links to previously detected bad actors, and human reviewers. Facial matching is one component, not the entire fraud-control system. Amazon’s overview of its seller controls explains that broader approach.

Privacy and fairness questions the public evidence does not settle

Submitting a face image and ID creates a meaningful privacy trade-off, particularly when facial measurements may be treated as biometric information and Amazon’s stated retention period can reach two years. Applicants should also understand that a service provider may process the information on Amazon’s behalf. The video alternative can avoid the facial-recognition route where it is offered, but it still involves identity verification and may require an appointment or human review.

Facial-recognition systems also raise wider questions about false matches, false rejections, accessibility, and demographic performance. The available sources do not provide an Amazon seller-verification error rate, demographic breakdown, or independent audit, so they do not establish that this specific process is either biased or unbiased, or more or less accurate than human review. Amazon’s original test description included human review, but current public documentation does not establish exactly how an unsuccessful automated match is handled in every marketplace.

How to prepare if Amazon requests verification

  1. Check the request in Seller Central. Use Amazon’s official seller account rather than a link in an unsolicited message. Keep the case number and instructions if you need to contact support.
  2. Match the application to your documents. Use consistent legal names and addresses, and make sure the person completing the check is authorized for the business.
  3. Prepare clear originals. Provide complete, legible documents with all four corners visible; for the U.S. flow, the address proof should fall within Amazon’s stated 180-day window.
  4. Choose the offered method. If you do not want to submit facial images for recognition and video verification is available, select that route before completing image capture.
  5. Check the setup before starting. A functioning front-facing camera and stable internet connection help avoid interruptions. If Amazon asks for a video call, have the requested original documents ready.
  6. Respond to specific follow-up requests. A blurry or cropped ID, mismatched details, or missing proof of authority can lead to another request. Do not alter documents or use unofficial account-approval services.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
