On September 1, 2026, U.S. corn stocks totaled 2.095 billion bushels, up 35% from a year earlier; soybean stocks totaled 315.133 million bushels, down 3%. USDA released the figures on September 30, 2026. The available figures do not verify that both crops were at four-year highs, and forecasts issued earlier in 2026 should not be mistaken for a current inventory count.
How much corn and soybeans were in stock?
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports inventories on a specific reference date. Its September 2026 report covers stocks on September 1:
| Crop | Stocks on September 1, 2026 | Change from September 1, 2025 | June–August 2026 disappearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corn | 2.095 billion bushels | Up 35% | 3.20 billion bushels |
| Soybeans | 315.133 million bushels | Down 3% | 744 million bushels |
These figures come from USDA NASS’s September 2026 Grain Stocks report and its September 30, 2026 release. The percentage changes are year over year. The report gives the stocks levels and percentages; it does not state the corresponding bushel changes in the cited summary.
Why are corn stocks up while soybean stocks are down?
The stocks count is a snapshot of what remained in inventory on September 1. It reflects the balance between supplies and use over time, but the inventory figure alone does not explain the causes of the year-over-year change. The same report provides one measure of recent use: indicated disappearance during June through August. Corn disappearance was 3.20 billion bushels, compared with 3.10 billion a year earlier; soybean disappearance was 744 million, compared with 683 million. Disappearance is the amount that left stocks during the quarter, not the amount remaining at the end of it.

Where were the stocks stored?
NASS splits reported inventory into on-farm and off-farm positions. Off-farm stocks include grain held at commercial facilities such as mills, elevators, warehouses, terminals and processors.
| Crop | On-farm | Off-farm |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | 787.3 million bushels | 1.308 billion bushels |
| Soybeans | 90.4 million bushels | 224.733 million bushels |
The split describes where the September 1 inventory was held; it is not a separate measure of production or consumption. NASS uses a probability sample of farm operators for the on-farm survey and enumerates grain at known commercial storage facilities for the off-farm survey. See the NASS Grain Stocks survey-method summary.

Are these stocks at a four-year high?
The September 2026 figures establish that corn stocks were 35% higher and soybean stocks 3% lower than on the same date in 2025. They do not establish a four-year ranking for either crop: that claim requires comparable September 1 inventory figures for each of the preceding three years. Without that comparison, “biggest in four years” is not verified for both commodities.

“Stocks” in the Grain Stocks report means inventory counted at a stated date. “Ending stocks” in USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) are a marketing-year balance-sheet figure: they represent projected or estimated supplies remaining at the end of that marketing year. A WASDE number is not a physical inventory count on the day the report is published.

USDA’s May 2026 WASDE forecast lower U.S. corn ending stocks for 2026/27 than the prior year, by 185 million bushels, and projected a stocks-to-use ratio of 12.1%, versus 13.0% the prior year. The same May outlook projected lower soybean ending stocks despite higher soybean supplies. In June, USDA left its then-current U.S. 2026/27 soybean supply, use and price projections unchanged, as well as its 2025/26 soybean ending-stocks projection. These are dated forecasts, not October expectations or revisions to the September 1 observed stocks. See USDA’s WASDE reports.
