The High Court granted a winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited on 19 August 2026, following a petition by former Sheffield United owner United World over an alleged unpaid amount exceeding £35 million from the club’s 2024 sale. The order was against the company, not Sheffield United Football Club. The club said day-to-day operations were unaffected; the English Football League said it would consider the regulatory implications. No points deduction was reported as imposed.
What happened to Sheffield United’s new owners?
On 19 August 2026, Judge Paul Greenwood granted a winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited at the Insolvency and Companies Court, according to The Independent’s report of the hearing. United World, Sheffield United’s former owner, had petitioned over a sum it says remains unpaid from the 2024 sale.
The distinction between the company and the club matters. The reported order named COH Sports Bidco Limited; it was not described as an order against Sheffield United Football Club. The club’s spokesperson said: “This is a matter between the current owners and former owner.” The spokesperson also said the club was in contact with the EFL and that its day-to-day operations were unaffected.
Why was COH Sports Bidco wound up?
United World claims that more than £35 million remains due from the takeover. That figure is the former owner’s claim, reported by The Independent and by Sky Sports before the hearing on 17 August 2026; it should not be read as a final court finding on the underlying sale account.

Before the hearing, United World said it had taken legal steps to protect its interests because, in its view, the amount owed had not been paid. That was the former owner’s position, not an adjudicated finding on the full disputed account. The report of the 19 August order confirms the court outcome, but the reviewed reporting does not include the written order or settle every detail of the dispute.
How the dispute developed
- 23 December 2024: The BBC reported that COH Sports completed its takeover, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy. The transaction gave the group control of the men’s and women’s teams, Bramall Lane hotel and club real estate, as described in the BBC’s takeover report.
- 17 August 2026: Sky Sports reported United World’s claim that £35 million remained due and that a winding-up hearing was expected two days later. Any possible EFL consequence discussed at that point was prospective.
- 19 August 2026: The court granted the winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited.
- After the order: The EFL said it would consider the implications under its rules, including whether further action was required.
Sheffield United’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 also describe COH Sports’ acquisition as completed during the 2024/25 season and identify Rosen and Eltoukhy as its leaders. The club’s accounts provide that context; they do not establish the amount now claimed by United World.

Is Sheffield United facing a points deduction?
A points deduction was discussed in reports as a possible consequence if the EFL found a breach of its ownership regulations. The EFL’s reported statement was that it would consider the implications of the order in line with its regulations, including whether further action was required. It did not announce a points sanction in the reported response.
Accordingly, the available reporting establishes neither that Sheffield United has been deducted 12 points nor that the EFL has reached a final decision on a sanction. The club’s statement that daily operations were unaffected addresses its immediate operations; it does not decide the separate regulatory question.
