The City of Perth approved a $60,000 economic development sponsorship for West Australian Newspapers Limited to promote the 2025 Resources Technology Showcase. The event did take place in August 2025, but the available sources do not establish its final attendance or explain the annual report’s unfilled “Amount Acquitted” entry.

Why did the City of Perth provide $60,000?

The council unanimously approved the funding as an Economic Development Sponsorship to West Australian Newspapers Limited, which PerthNow described as the owner of PerthNow Local Newspapers. The cost was included in the City’s 2024–25 annual budget, according to PerthNow’s 29 August 2024 report.

The stated purpose was to promote a public event showcasing developments in Western Australia’s resources, energy, space and defence industries. The planned program included an exhibition, industry conference and industry working event, with technologies such as robotics, augmented reality and autonomous transport among the highlights.

What was the sponsor expected to do?

PerthNow reported that a City staff report proposed using Seven West Media’s television, print and digital assets to promote the showcase. The proposal said the campaign could reach 92 per cent of Western Australia’s population; this was a projected reach, not evidence that it was achieved. The reported plan also included targeted campaigns for business leaders, schools, tertiary students, interstate guests and city-based industry professionals.

Did the showcase happen?

Yes. An Australian Government transcript dated 17 August 2025 records Assistant Minister Patrick Gorman speaking at the Resources Technology Showcase at the Perth Convention Centre. That confirms the event was underway on its opening day.

How many people attended?

A final attendance total is not established by these sources. PerthNow’s 2024 article said the free event, scheduled for 17–19 August 2025, was expected to attract up to 20,000 people. At the event on 17 August, Gorman said “over the course of today, some 20,000 people are going to come through.” Both figures were forecasts: the first was a pre-event projection, and the second was an opening-day estimate, not a reported final count.

What does the City’s annual report show?

The City of Perth’s 2025 Annual Report lists West Australian Newspapers Limited and the Resources Technology Showcase 2025 with $60,000 in cash funding and no in-kind funding. Its “Amount Acquitted” column does not show an amount for this entry. The table does not explain that field, so it does not establish whether or how the sponsorship was paid or acquitted.
