A board-commissioned inquiry reported that ₹2,693 crore was missing from Coffee Day Enterprises Limited’s (CDEL) books—not that a court had established VG Siddhartha personally took or pocketed that sum. The same inquiry reported a larger ₹3,535 crore amount due from family-controlled Mysore Amalgamated Coffee Estates Limited (MACEL) to CDEL subsidiaries as of July 31, 2019. Those figures describe different accounting categories and dates.

What does the ₹2,700 crore headline mean?

It is a rounded version of ₹2,693 crore, the amount contemporaneous 2020 reporting said a company-commissioned inquiry found missing from CDEL’s books. The reported mechanism was advances from Coffee Day subsidiaries to MACEL, a private, family-controlled company. The inquiry’s finding was reported by news outlets; the sources cited here do not establish that a court adjudicated the discrepancy or that the money was personally pocketed by Siddhartha.

How do the ₹2,693 crore, ₹3,535 crore and ₹842 crore figures fit together?

The inquiry synopsis quoted by The New Indian Express reported that MACEL owed CDEL subsidiaries ₹3,535 crore as of July 31, 2019. It separately reported ₹2,693 crore missing from CDEL’s books and ₹842 crore already included in audited consolidated statements as of March 31, 2019.

Amount What it refers to Date and status
₹2,693 crore Amount reported missing from CDEL’s books Finding attributed to the 2020 inquiry in contemporaneous reporting
₹3,535 crore Amount MACEL reportedly owed CDEL subsidiaries As of July 31, 2019, according to the inquiry synopsis quoted in 2020
₹842 crore Amount already recorded in consolidated audited statements As of March 31, 2019, according to the same reporting

The dates and accounting treatment differ, so the figures should not be added together or treated as interchangeable. In particular, ₹3,535 crore was the reported total due; it was not all described as unrecorded.

What did investigators say the advances may have funded?

The inquiry synopsis said a significant portion may have been used to buy back equity from private-equity investors, repay loans, pay interest, and fund other private investments. It also said the amounts could not be precisely ascertained. These were reported possible uses, not a complete, precisely traced allocation.

Who conducted the inquiry, and what did it establish?

After Siddhartha’s death, CDEL’s board ordered an investigation led by retired CBI officer Ashok Kumar Malhotra, with legal support reported from Agastya Legal. News coverage reported the findings in July 2020. CDEL disclosed the investigation report to stock exchanges; the company disclosure is available in its investor reports.

The distinction matters: a board-commissioned inquiry is not itself a court judgment. The contemporaneous accounts support describing the figures as inquiry findings reported by the press, not as a judicial determination of individual criminal liability.

What did the Income Tax Department say in 2019?

In a statement dated July 30, 2019, the Income Tax Department said it could not then confirm the authenticity of the note circulating in Siddhartha’s name and said its signature did not match one available in annual reports. The department’s release also said Siddhartha had admitted unaccounted income of ₹362.11 crore in his individual case and CDEL ₹118.02 crore in its case. Those are separate figures from the later-reported MACEL balances; they should not be added to the ₹2,693 crore claim. The release, reproduced by TaxGuru, is the department’s contemporaneous account, not an independent adjudication of every disputed point.

The department said it provisionally attached 74.9 lakh Mindtree shares held by Siddhartha and CDEL in January 2019, then revoked the attachment on February 13 after other CDEL shares were offered as security, subject to conditions on sale proceeds. It said the Mindtree sale to L&T Infotech generated about ₹3,200 crore: around ₹3,000 crore went to loan repayment, ₹154 crore to transfer expenses, and ₹46 crore to an advance-tax installment. These details are the department’s account of the transactions.

Did the inquiry attribute Siddhartha’s death to tax pressure?

The reported inquiry found no documentary evidence of harassment by tax officials. It characterized persistent reminders from lenders and private-equity investors as normal industry practice, while also placing liquidity pressure and the Mindtree-share attachment in the wider financial context. These are reported conclusions about the circumstances; they do not establish a single cause of Siddhartha’s death. The department’s separate account should likewise be understood as its own statement, rather than as a definitive resolution of every question about pressure or causation.

Which other Coffee Day figures are easy to confuse with the claim?

CDEL’s reported debt of about ₹7,200 crore as of March 2019 and the reported ₹2,700 crore sale price of Global Village Technology Park in Bengaluru are separate from the ₹2,693 crore discrepancy. The property-sale figure was associated with debt reduction; it is not another description of money missing from CDEL’s books. Contemporary reporting on these figures appeared in India Today.

What remains unresolved?

CDEL said it would seek recovery from MACEL and take steps through subsidiaries. The records cited here do not establish the eventual recovery outcome, a current outstanding balance, or a later court finding on the reported discrepancy. Without later filings or proceedings, none of those outcomes can be stated as settled.
