1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOffice 2024 is a genuine one-time purchase, but “finally available” is no longer accurate. Microsoft released the consumer editions on October 1, 2024. As of August 2026, the important question is not whether it has launched, but whether paying once for a fixed version makes more sense for your household or small business than subscribing to Microsoft 365.
The short answer: Office Home 2024 costs $179.99 and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for one PC or Mac. Office Home & Business 2024 costs $249.99 and adds Outlook plus commercial-use rights. Neither requires a recurring subscription to keep using the purchased desktop license.
Office 2024 pricing and what you get
Microsoft currently sells two main consumer editions in its US store. Prices can change, so check the product page before buying.
| Edition | Included apps | Devices | Permitted use | Current price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote | One PC or Mac | Non-commercial home or school use | $179.99 |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote | One PC or Mac | Home or commercial use | $249.99 |
Microsoft’s original launch announcement listed Office Home at $149.99, but the current Microsoft Store listing shows $179.99. Treat both prices as time-sensitive: promotions, regional pricing, and tax can change the amount you pay.

- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
The device limitation matters financially. A purchase for one computer is not a household license for every laptop, desktop, and Mac you own. If you regularly work across several devices, Microsoft 365 may offer better value through its multi-device licensing and cloud services, even though it creates an ongoing bill.
“No subscription” does not mean “no account or internet”
Office 2024 is perpetual software: you pay once rather than paying monthly or annually to retain the desktop applications. However, there are three conditions that are easy to overlook:
- You need a Microsoft account to redeem and associate the retail license.
- You need an internet connection to redeem the key and activate Office.
- Microsoft requires periodic internet checks to keep the apps activated.
After installation, you can use the applications for ordinary offline work, but it would be misleading to describe Office 2024 as completely offline software. The purchase also does not include the broader Microsoft 365 package, such as the subscription’s cloud storage or its continuously updated feature set.
Which edition should you buy?
Choose Office Home 2024 if:
- You need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for personal or school work.
- You will install it on one computer.
- You do not need the desktop Outlook application.
- You will not use the license for a business, freelance activity, or other commercial work.
Choose Office Home & Business 2024 if:
- You need Outlook as well as the other core Office apps.
- You will use Office for work, a business, or freelance income.
- You prefer to make one larger payment rather than maintain a subscription.
Do not buy Home 2024 for a business simply because it is cheaper. The two editions differ in commercial-use rights, not just in the list of applications.

How to redeem and install Office 2024
For a boxed or digitally purchased retail copy with a 25-character key:
- Open
microsoft365.com/setuporoffice.com/setup. - Sign in to your Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter the product key and follow the redemption prompts.
- Finish associating the license with that Microsoft account.
- On the account dashboard, choose the option to install Office on your PC or Mac.
The key is normally redeemed only once. If you reinstall later, sign in with the same Microsoft account used during redemption. Entering the key again under a different account will not transfer the license.
Common installation and activation costs
The purchase price is not the only potential source of hassle. Existing Office installations can interfere with the setup:
- Different Office products installed: Microsoft generally does not allow incompatible subscription, retail, and volume-licensed products to coexist. You may see “We can’t install. The following product(s) can’t be installed at the same time.”
- 32-bit and 64-bit conflict: You cannot mix Office architectures. To change from 32-bit to 64-bit, uninstall the existing version before installing the replacement.
- Wrong Microsoft account: Office may appear unlicensed even when you own it if you signed in with an account other than the one that redeemed the key.
- Outdated removal advice: Microsoft says its Office uninstall troubleshooter currently cannot remove Office 2024. Older guides that recommend it for every Office version are not reliable for this product.
Before purchasing, check whether your computer already has Microsoft 365 or another Office edition. Removing a conflicting installation may require manual steps or Microsoft’s current Office-specific instructions.

System requirements to check before paying
| Requirement | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Microsoft’s current detailed requirements list Windows 11 | One of the three most recent macOS versions |
| Processor | 1.1 GHz or faster, two-core processor | Intel or Apple silicon |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 4 GB available space | 10 GB available space |
| Display | 1280 × 768 minimum; 64-bit Office required for 4K or higher displays | 1280 × 800 minimum |
There is a documentation mismatch worth noting. Microsoft Store material still describes the retail editions as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11, while Microsoft’s current detailed requirements page lists Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If your computer still runs Windows 10, do not treat compatibility wording in a retailer listing as a guarantee of current support.
What is new in Office 2024?
Office 2024 is a fixed-version release rather than a radically different Office experience. Microsoft highlights a newer Fluent-based theme, accessibility improvements, OpenDocument Format 1.4 support, and better stability.
- Excel: the IMAGE function and improved handling of pictures inside tables.
- PowerPoint: Cameo for placing a live camera feed on a slide, plus Recording Studio improvements and presentation-video export.
- Outlook: improved search and options to shorten meetings automatically.
- Word: recovery of a work session after an unexpected close.
- OneNote: newer drawing and inking capabilities, although some features listed by Microsoft are specific to LTSC editions.
These improvements do not mean Office 2024 receives every new Microsoft 365 feature. It receives security and quality updates, but it does not follow Microsoft 365’s continuous feature-update model.
How long will Office 2024 be supported?
Microsoft lists October 9, 2029, as the support retirement date for the retail Office 2024 editions. That gives a buyer a defined support window, but it also means a purchase made now is not software you should expect to receive feature updates indefinitely.

Office LTSC 2024 is sometimes confused with the retail product. LTSC is a separate, volume-licensed commercial edition for organizations with restricted or regulated environments. It is not the normal consumer Microsoft Store purchase. Its support also ends October 9, 2029.
How Office 2024 compares with a subscription
The financial trade-off is straightforward:
| Office 2024 | Microsoft 365 subscription |
|---|---|
| One upfront payment | Recurring monthly or annual payment |
| One PC or Mac license | Broader device and service benefits, depending on plan |
| Fixed feature set | Continuously updated features |
| No subscription cloud-storage bundle included | Cloud storage and other subscription services included, depending on plan |
| Support retirement listed for October 9, 2029 | Access continues while the subscription remains active |
Office Home 2024 can be sensible for someone who uses one computer, wants standard desktop applications, and dislikes recurring charges. Home & Business may be preferable when Outlook or commercial-use rights are necessary. A subscription can be more economical for households with several devices or users, particularly when cloud storage and frequent feature updates would otherwise be purchased separately.
Compare the total cost over the period you expect to use the software. A one-time purchase avoids renewal bills, but you also pay again when you eventually want a newer perpetual version.

FAQ
Is Microsoft Office 2024 a one-time purchase?
Yes. Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024 are perpetual retail licenses, so you do not need a Microsoft 365 subscription to retain the purchased desktop software. You still need a Microsoft account and internet access for redemption, activation, and periodic activation checks.
Does Office Home 2024 include Outlook?
No. Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Outlook is included in Office Home & Business 2024, which also permits commercial use.
Can I install Office 2024 on more than one computer?
The consumer retail license is for one PC or Mac. It is not a multi-device household license.

Does Office 2024 work on Windows 10?
Microsoft Store information has described the retail editions as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Microsoft’s current detailed system-requirements page lists Windows 11. Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, Windows 10 users should not assume they have a fully supported setup.
The Bottom Line
Office 2024 is available and does not require a recurring subscription. At current Microsoft Store prices of $179.99 for Home and $249.99 for Home & Business, it is best suited to one-computer users who want predictable ownership costs and can live with a fixed feature set. Check the device limit, commercial-use rules, Outlook requirement, Windows version, and the October 9, 2029 support end date before treating the upfront payment as a bargain.
