Generally, no. Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred from one Nintendo Account to another. Selling the account that owns the games is also prohibited under Nintendo’s published guidance. Moving your account and games to a replacement console is different: it preserves your access rather than selling a game to a new owner.
Can you transfer a digital game to another Nintendo Account?
No. Nintendo Support states, “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” That applies to a digital game purchase; Nintendo’s support guidance also covers downloadable content. The purchase remains associated with the Nintendo Account that made it. Nintendo Support’s account-transfer FAQ explains the distinction.
Does selling your Nintendo Account work?
Nintendo says, “Neither your Nintendo Account nor your Nintendo Network ID can be transferred or sold to another person.” Nintendo Support’s account-ownership FAQ sets out that policy. Handing over login credentials does not turn an account-bound purchase into a permitted game sale.
Nintendo UK says selling or transferring an account to a third party violates the Nintendo Account Agreement and may lead to account suspension when Nintendo confirms a violation. Nintendo UK’s account-ownership guidance describes that consequence. This is Nintendo’s published policy, not a recommendation to use account marketplaces.

What is different about moving games to a new console?
A console migration moves the owner’s account and access to replacement hardware; it does not assign an individual purchase to someone else’s account. Nintendo provides a guide to transferring user data between Nintendo Switch consoles. If the old console is unavailable, the account owner can sign in on a new system and download eligible games through that account.
Nintendo also says downloaded content is not limited to the purchasing account in the described console context, so another user on that console may be able to access it. That shared console access does not make the purchase transferable or give the other user a separate ownership right.

What do Nintendo’s terms say about resale?
Nintendo of America’s Nintendo Switch User Agreement describes software as licensed for personal, noncommercial use and includes offering software for sale among restricted acts. Nintendo’s US Purchase and Subscription Terms, last updated August 2026, say some software and digital content are licensed rather than sold, and that products are for personal use and may not be resold for commercial purposes.
These are Nintendo’s contractual terms and policy statements. They are not a universal ruling on consumer rights: applicable law can vary by jurisdiction.

Should you buy physical or digital if resale matters?
Compare the format for the specific game before purchasing. A physical game card is a separate item that may be resold as that physical copy, subject to applicable local rules. A physical edition does not make an existing digital purchase resellable, and not every title is necessarily available physically in every market.
| Consideration | Physical game card | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Resale | The card is a separate item and may be resold as that copy, subject to local rules. | Stays associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account under Nintendo’s guidance. |
| Playing on replacement hardware | Requires the game card. | The account owner can download games through their account on a replacement console. |
| Availability | Check whether the specific title has a physical release in your market. | Availability depends on the digital listing and account access. |
Nintendo’s terms describe licensing and restrict certain resale activity; neither those terms nor the format comparison establishes a resale price or a global rule for every transaction. Check local law if the legal treatment matters to your decision.
