Boeing Completes Rework on the Last of 122 Stored 787 Dreamliners

Boeing completed join-verification work on the last of 122 stored 787 Dreamliners, but the milestone does not mean every separate 787 quality concern was resolved.

Boeing completed join-verification work on the last of 122 stored 787 Dreamliners, according to The Air Current on February 28, 2025. The final aircraft was a 787-10 that left Boeing’s Everett, Washington, factory earlier that week. The milestone closed out a defined inventory rework program—not every separate quality or safety issue involving the 787.

What Boeing finished on the 122 aircraft

The Air Current reported that Boeing confirmed it had completed join-verification work on the final aircraft in an inventory group of 122 787s. The reported concern involved checking whether gaps at fuselage joins met specifications. The work included disassembling, inspecting and rebuilding fuselage joins and other parts.

The report described the effort as “shadow factory” work and said the process for each aircraft required more labor hours than normally needed to build an entire airplane. “Structural repairs” is a broad shorthand for the work: the specific milestone was completion of verification and rework on this group of stored aircraft, not a declaration that every 787 had been inspected or that every quality concern had been resolved.

How the FAA proposal is different

A separate FAA proposed airworthiness directive in 2025 addressed reported nonconformances at the forward pressure bulkhead on certain 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft. The FAA described excessive gaps and pull-up during assembly and installation, and proposed internal and external detailed inspections followed by corrective actions where applicable. The available reporting does not identify this proposal as part of Boeing’s 122-aircraft inventory rework.

The FAA wrote in its proposed directive: “The FAA is issuing this NPRM after determining that the unsafe condition described previously is likely to exist or develop on other products of the same type design.” That is language from the official proposal, not a statement by a named individual. The document is a proposed rule; its later status is not established here.

What the milestone does—and does not—show

The reported completion answers a specific question: Boeing finished the join-verification work on the last aircraft in the cited group of 122 stored 787s. It does not establish that the FAA’s separate forward-pressure-bulkhead concern was resolved, that the proposal became a final rule, or that all structural-quality issues across the 787 fleet were closed. No independently verified figure in the reviewed material gives the total cost of Boeing’s 122-aircraft rework.
