Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Before paying for inventory, software, advertising, or shipping, you need a product people want, a realistic per-order margin, and a plan for taxes and cash flow.
These eight steps outline how to launch a U.S.-based online store selling physical or digital products. Business-registration, tax, shipping, privacy, and product-safety rules vary by state, city, and product category, so verify requirements that apply to your situation.
1. Choose a product, customer, and business model
Start by defining three things:
- What you will sell: physical goods, digital downloads, subscriptions, services, or a combination.
- Who will buy it: Identify the customer’s needs, budget, buying habits, and alternatives.
- Why they will choose you: Your advantage might be price, quality, convenience, customization, expertise, or a particular audience.
Then choose how the product will reach the customer. Common models include manufacturing, wholesaling, private labeling, dropshipping, and print-on-demand. Digital products avoid physical inventory and shipping, but they still require customer support, secure delivery, refunds, and clear usage terms.
Begin with a small, testable catalog. Buying thousands of dollars of inventory before confirming demand creates a cash-flow risk: money is tied up in products that may take months to sell or may need to be discounted.

Calculate the contribution margin
Revenue is not profit. Estimate what remains from each order after costs that change with sales:
Selling price
− product cost
− payment-processing fee
− packaging and shipping subsidy
− expected returns and refunds
− advertising cost per order
= contribution margin
For example, a $40 sale with $14 of product cost, $2 of payment fees, $6 of shipping and packaging, $2 reserved for returns, and $8 of advertising cost produces a $8 contribution margin. That amount still may need to cover software, insurance, payroll, storage, and other fixed expenses.
Sales tax collected from customers generally is not business revenue. It is money collected for remittance to the relevant tax authority.
2. Choose and register the business
Your business structure affects liability, taxes, ownership, and administrative work. Options can include a sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership, or corporation. There is no universal rule that says every online seller must form an LLC before making a sale.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, requirements depend on your structure and location. A sole proprietor operating under their own legal name may not need to register a separate business, while using a fictitious name may require a DBA registration.
Check the following before launch:
- Business-name or DBA registration
- State business registration
- City or county business licenses
- Product-specific permits
- Seller’s permits or sales-tax registration
- Home-occupation rules if you will work from home
The SBA’s licenses and permits guidance notes that requirements vary by activity and location. Products such as food, cosmetics, supplements, children’s goods, and electronics may involve additional rules.
Get an EIN when appropriate
The IRS issues Employer Identification Numbers for free. An EIN is required for several business types, including partnerships, LLCs, corporations, and tax-exempt organizations. A sole proprietor may need one if they have employees or certain tax obligations, and may also obtain one for banking or state-tax purposes.

Recommended Free Tools
Open a separate business bank account and keep personal and business transactions apart. This makes bookkeeping and tax preparation easier and helps you understand whether the store is actually making money. Consider business insurance as well, particularly if you sell physical products or invite customers to rely on your claims about safety or performance.
3. Pick the store platform and domain
Your platform determines how much technical work you handle and which tools are available for payments, inventory, shipping, taxes, analytics, and customer accounts.
| Option | Financial and operational trade-off |
|---|---|
| Hosted ecommerce platform | Faster setup and managed hosting, security, and checkout; usually includes monthly and transaction fees. |
| WordPress/WooCommerce or another self-hosted system | More control and customization; you manage hosting, updates, backups, extensions, and security. |
| Marketplace-first selling | Immediate access to existing shoppers; you operate under marketplace rules, fees, and account restrictions. |
| Custom storefront | Useful for unusual requirements, but development and maintenance costs are higher. |
Compare monthly fees, payment-provider availability, transaction fees, inventory tools, shipping integrations, tax features, subscription or digital-product support, staff permissions, data controls, and whether you can export your products and customer data.
Connect a custom domain that matches your brand. A temporary platform subdomain works during setup, but a custom domain is generally better for recognition and customer trust.
On Shopify, the relevant paths include:
Shopify admin → Settings → Domains
Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize
Shopify assigns a myshopify.com domain automatically, and its help documentation says that domain can be changed only twice. The Online Store sales channel is available on Basic and higher plans. Before paying for apps or a theme, estimate whether their added sales or time savings can justify the recurring cost.
4. Build the catalog and storefront
A product page should answer the questions a customer would otherwise email you about. Include:

- Label maker for Shipping labels & small business labels
- supports multiple-size wide wireless printing
- Download "RONGTA" app for phone to bluetooth print
- Download computer driver for PC/Laptop to USB print
- Inkless Thermal Printing for Sharp Clarity
- Accurate title, price, and currency
- Original photos or video
- Variants such as size, color, or quantity
- Stock status
- Dimensions and weight
- Materials, ingredients, compatibility, and care instructions
- Digital-file format and delivery method, if applicable
- Processing and shipping times
- Return restrictions
- Safety warnings and required disclosures
In Shopify, add a product through:
Shopify admin → Products → Add product → enter details → Save
A responsive storefront should include a home page, catalog, collection pages, product pages, About page, Contact page, shipping policy, return or refund policy, privacy policy, and terms or customer terms where appropriate. Add an FAQ if customers repeatedly ask the same pre-sale questions.
Link important policies from your menus. A customer should be able to see shipping charges, expected delivery times, and return conditions before paying—not after an order has gone wrong.
5. Configure payments, taxes, shipping, and fulfillment
Payments
Activate payment methods that your customers can use, such as cards, digital wallets, bank payments, or other methods available in your country. Shopify payment settings are located at:
Shopify admin → Settings → Payments
A hosted checkout reduces development work, but it does not eliminate every security and compliance responsibility. PCI DSS obligations depend on how payment pages are implemented. The PCI Security Standards Council says eligibility for the simplest SAQ A assessment requires all payment-page elements to originate only from a PCI DSS-compliant service provider, subject to the applicable criteria.
Sales tax
Do not automatically collect sales tax in every state. First determine where you have an obligation to collect tax, register with the applicable tax agency, and then configure those jurisdictions. The obligation can depend on factors such as physical presence, economic activity, marketplace rules, and the products you sell.
For Shopify’s U.S. setup, the path is:
Shopify admin → Settings → Taxes and duties → United States
→ Add new state → select state → enter Sales tax ID → Collect taxes
Shopify can calculate taxes, but the merchant remains responsible for determining where to register and for meeting filing and remittance obligations unless using an applicable automated filing service. Shipping may also be taxable, depending on the jurisdiction. The setting is:

Nelko PL70E label printer is much smaller than traditional printers and only requires a small piece of space to achieve printing. Shipping promises have legal and financial consequences. Under the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, sellers need a reasonable basis for their shipping claims. If no shipping time is stated, the general default is shipment within 30 days. When an order will be delayed, the seller must provide the required notice and give the customer a choice to accept the delay or receive a prompt refund.
Do not claim “ships today,” “in stock,” or “two-day shipping” unless your inventory and fulfillment process can support those statements. For international orders, state who acts as importer of record and who pays duties, import taxes, and brokerage charges. If using Shopify duty calculations, products need country-of-origin information and HS codes, and the estimate may differ from the amount ultimately assessed by customs.
6. Add customer and business policies
Write policies that describe what you actually do. Cover:
- Eligible and ineligible returns
- Return window and condition requirements
- Who pays return shipping
- Refund timing and method
- Exchanges and replacements
- Damaged or incorrect orders
- Cancellations, preorders, and backorders
- Digital-product refunds, if applicable
- International duties and taxes
- Customer-service contact information
A copied policy can create a mismatch between your promise and your operations. Do not promise same-day fulfillment, unlimited returns, or privacy practices that your business cannot deliver. Consumer-protection laws may still apply even if your terms say customers “waive all rights.”
If you send U.S. commercial email, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance requires accurate header and subject information, a valid physical postal address, and an opt-out method. Honor opt-out requests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Test the complete buying process and launch
Before accepting real orders, test the store as a customer on desktop and mobile. Use this checklist:
- Search for a product and navigate through categories.
- Select variants and confirm inventory changes correctly.
- Apply discount codes and check tax and shipping calculations.
- Test address validation and available delivery destinations.
- Run a successful payment and a failed payment.
- Test wallet payments if you offer them.
- Confirm order, fulfillment, and refund emails.
- Test cancellations, partial fulfillment, returns, and out-of-stock products.
- Submit contact forms and check every important link.
- Review keyboard navigation, accessibility, and mobile page speed.
Shopify’s preview path is:
Shopify admin → Sales channels → Online store
→ hover over Online store → click the eye icon
Before making a password-protected Shopify store public, select a plan, complete testing, and remove the storefront password. Also verify that the primary domain resolves correctly, HTTPS is active, inventory is accurate, policies are visible, analytics records purchases, and no placeholder text or test products remain. Give staff only the permissions they need.

8. Market the store and improve it from real data
Choose a small number of marketing channels that match your customers. Possibilities include search content, email, organic social media, paid search, paid social, affiliate or creator partnerships, marketplaces, and local events.
Track completed purchases rather than treating attention as success. Useful metrics include:
- Store visits and product-page views
- Add-to-cart and checkout-start rates
- Purchase conversion rate
- Average order value
- Customer-acquisition cost
- Contribution margin after marketing and fulfillment
- Refund rate and repeat-purchase rate
Search visibility does not happen automatically. Google recommends making products reachable through ordinary HTML links from menus to category pages to product pages. Googlebot generally does not submit searches into a site’s search box. If products cannot be reached through navigation, use a sitemap or Merchant Center feed. Product structured data can help Google understand product information and may qualify pages for richer results, but it does not guarantee rankings or display.
Start with one measurable promotion—for example, a welcome-email sequence or a small paid campaign. Keep it long enough to collect meaningful purchase data, then compare the resulting contribution margin with the cost of acquiring those orders.

FAQ
How much money do I need to start an online store?
There is no fixed minimum. Your starting cash requirement depends on inventory, product development, platform fees, packaging, permits, insurance, marketing, and an operating cushion. A small catalog or digital-product model can reduce upfront inventory costs. Calculate your expected contribution margin before committing money to stock or advertising.
Do I need an LLC to sell online?
Not in every case. A sole proprietor using their legal name may not need to register a separate business, while a fictitious name may require DBA registration. Requirements vary by state, city, business structure, and product. Consider liability, tax, ownership, and administrative issues before choosing a structure.
Do online stores have to collect sales tax?
An online store may need to collect sales tax in jurisdictions where the seller has a collection obligation and is registered or required to register. Do not turn on tax collection everywhere by default. Check state and local rules, product-specific treatment, and marketplace requirements.
What should I test before launching my online store?
Place test orders on desktop and mobile, including successful and failed payments. Check variants, inventory, discounts, taxes, shipping rates, address validation, order emails, fulfillment, refunds, cancellations, returns, contact forms, broken links, accessibility, analytics, HTTPS, and the visibility of your policies.

The Bottom Line
Launch with a product customers can understand, a margin that survives fulfillment and marketing costs, and only as much inventory as your demand evidence supports. Register the business appropriately, separate its finances, configure taxes and shipping carefully, publish honest policies, test checkout end to end, and use completed-order data to decide what to improve next.
