How To Start A Podcast And Make Money

A practical guide to launching a podcast, avoiding RSS and copyright problems, reaching major platforms, and earning through services, affiliates, memberships, sponsorships, and platform monetization.

A podcast can make money, but advertising is rarely the best first business model. A small show with a clearly defined audience may earn more from consulting, affiliate commissions, digital products, memberships, or services than from selling ads.

The practical path is to choose a narrow topic, publish consistently, build an owned audience such as an email list, distribute the show through an RSS feed, and connect each episode to a revenue offer. Platform monetization can help later, but eligibility rules, audience size, location, and content policies vary.

1. Choose a podcast concept that can support revenue

Start with a specific listener and a recurring problem. “Personal finance” is too broad by itself. A more useful concept might be:

 • Debt payoff for single parents
 • Investing basics for freelancers with irregular income
 • Money systems for new doctors
 • Budgeting for young families in high-cost cities
 • Small-business cash flow for independent contractors

A defined audience makes it easier to decide what to publish and what to sell. Write a one-sentence promise before recording:

“Every week, this show helps [specific audience] do [specific result] without [common obstacle].”

Then decide on the format. Solo explainers are efficient and work well for educational subjects. Interviews can build credibility and introduce you to other audiences, but they require guest research and scheduling. Co-hosted shows can be engaging, although they need clear agreements about ownership, costs, publishing responsibilities, and revenue.

Choose a schedule you can maintain. Weekly publishing is useful only if you can produce weekly episodes without sacrificing accuracy. A reliable fortnightly show is better than an ambitious weekly schedule that ends after six episodes.

Pick the revenue path before you buy equipment

Your primary revenue model should influence the show’s design:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Revenue model Best fit What the show should do
Services Consultants, coaches, freelancers, professionals Demonstrate expertise and generate inquiries
Affiliate sales Shows that naturally review tools or products Explain who the product suits and link to it clearly
Digital products Educational or process-driven shows Teach useful concepts and lead listeners to a deeper resource
Memberships Shows with a loyal community Offer bonus content, private feeds, or access
Sponsorships Shows with a defined, commercially relevant audience Deliver a measurable audience and credible host-read placement
YouTube monetization Shows willing to publish full video episodes Build subscribers, watch time, and compliant video content

Do not build your budget around guaranteed advertising income. A platform may offer monetization only in certain countries, categories, or audience bands, and meeting an eligibility threshold does not guarantee substantial revenue.

2. Produce a credible launch package

You do not need a studio to begin. You do need intelligible audio. Start with:

 • A microphone that produces clear speech
 • A quiet room with limited echo
 • Recording and editing software, or an editing service
 • Cover artwork
 • A show name and description
 • A contact email
 • A podcast host that creates and serves your RSS feed

For a personal-finance show, accuracy is part of production quality. Check calculations, distinguish education from individualized advice where appropriate, and identify assumptions behind examples. Avoid presenting a hypothetical return, tax outcome, or debt payoff timeline as a guaranteed result.

A practical launch package

 1. Trailer: Record a one- to two-minute explanation of who the show serves and what listeners will get.
 2. Two or three full episodes: Give new listeners enough material to judge the show.
 3. Landing page: Include the show description, listening links, episode summaries, disclosures, and contact details.
 4. Email signup: Offer a useful checklist, calculator, worksheet, or written summary rather than simply asking people to “subscribe.”
 5. Promotion assets: Prepare short clips, quotations, charts, or written excerpts for social channels and newsletters.

Apple identifies Full, Bonus, and Trailer as supported episode types and recommends a short trailer for a new show.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Set up and protect the RSS feed

Your RSS feed is the distribution address that podcast platforms read. A hosting provider is usually the sensible choice unless you are comfortable maintaining XML, audio-file hosting, redirects, bandwidth, and validation yourself.

 • Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
 • Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
 • Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
 • Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
 • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Apple’s RSS requirements include artwork, at least one episode, required RSS tags, a publicly addressable feed, valid episode enclosures, and a never-changing GUID for each episode. The feed must also support HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests so apps can retrieve artwork and stream or download episodes.

Each episode needs a unique enclosure containing its URL, file length, and MIME type. It also needs a globally unique
that does not change when you edit the title or description.

RSS is case-sensitive XML. Escape special characters, including using & instead of a literal ampersand in XML content. Dates must use RFC 2822 formatting, such as:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

RSS problems that can break distribution

 • Duplicate enclosure URLs: A platform may ignore an episode when its enclosure URL duplicates another episode.
 • Changed GUIDs: Platforms can treat an existing episode as new, creating duplicate downloads or fragmented analytics.
 • Private access: A feed submitted to Apple must be publicly addressable. Private feeds are for paid or restricted distribution.
 • Invalid XML: Unescaped ampersands, incorrect quotation marks, bad dates, wrong capitalization, and malformed tags can stop validation.
 • Host migration without a redirect: Keep the original feed where possible or configure a permanent RSS redirect before cancelling the old hosting account.

4. Submit the podcast to listening platforms

Apple Podcasts

For an RSS-based show, use this Apple Podcasts Connect path:

 1. Sign in to Apple Podcasts Connect.
 2. Click Add (+).
 3. Select New Show.
 4. Choose Add a show with an RSS feed.
 5. Enter the RSS feed URL and click Add.
 6. Review the show information.
 7. Set Content Rights and confirm that you have rights to third-party material.
 8. Set Availability, including countries, distribution, transcripts, release timing, and show-claiming preferences.
 9. Optionally add a subscription.
 10. Click Save, then publish the show.

Apple validates the feed before submission. Resolve validation errors before publication. A show marked Published still will not appear until at least one episode has been added and published.

You can test the feed first:

 • iPhone or iPad: Podcasts → Library → Edit → Add a Show by URL…
 • Mac: Podcasts → File → Add a Show by URL…

This tests artwork and playback but does not place the show in Apple’s public directory.

Spotify and other services

Spotify for Creators automatically makes a Spotify-hosted show available on Spotify. It does not automatically submit that show to Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, or every other listening service. Use the RSS feed to submit the show separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Spotify-hosted show, find the feed at Settings → Availability. Spotify says most platforms publish a submitted show within a few hours, though some manually review submissions. New or updated episodes usually appear within a few hours but can take up to 24 hours.

Spotify may verify ownership through the email address in the RSS feed. For a Spotify-hosted show, the path is Settings → Availability → Add email to RSS feed. That address becomes publicly visible, so use an inbox you monitor and are comfortable exposing.

YouTube

A normal YouTube podcast is a playlist containing full-length episode videos. It is not simply an MP3 upload.

 1. Open YouTube Studio.
 2. Click Create.
 3. Select New podcast.
 4. Choose Create a new podcast.
 5. Enter the title, description, visibility, and square thumbnail.
 6. Click Create.
 7. Add full-length episode videos.

To add episodes later, use YouTube Studio → Content → Podcasts → select the podcast → Add videos. Shorts can promote the show, but they do not appear in YouTube Music as podcast episodes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an episodic show, order episodes newest to oldest. For a serial show, order them oldest to newest. Change this under YouTube Studio → Content → Podcasts → select the podcast → Edit → Default Video Order → Save.

YouTube can also ingest a podcast through an RSS feed and create static-image videos. Check those videos for copyright and monetization problems before relying on that workflow.

5. Choose a realistic way to make money

Sponsorships

Possible placements include host-read pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll ads; episode sponsorships; newsletter bundles; website placements; and integrated video segments.

For a small personal-finance show, a narrowly defined audience can be more valuable than a large but vague one. A sponsor may care whether listeners are business owners, homeowners, investors, or people actively comparing financial products. Build a simple media sheet with audience location, episode plays or downloads, retention, listener profile, past results, and the exact placement offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not claim that a financial product worked for you if you have not used it, and do not repeat claims an advertiser cannot substantiate. Disclose financial, employment, family, personal, free-product, discount, and affiliate relationships clearly and conspicuously. A spoken disclosure should be understandable in the episode itself:

“This episode is sponsored by [Brand]. We may earn a commission if you purchase through our link.”

The disclosure must accurately describe the relationship. “Affiliate link” by itself may not clearly communicate that you receive compensation.

Affiliate revenue

Affiliate sales are most credible when the recommendation solves a problem already discussed on the show. Suitable categories might include books, budgeting software, business tools, equipment, courses, or services.

Use a trackable link and disclose the commission relationship before or alongside the recommendation. Explain who the product is for, its limitations, and whether cheaper or free alternatives exist. Personal-finance audiences are particularly sensitive to incentives, so a commission should never be hidden behind a supposedly neutral recommendation.

Products and services

For many small shows, an owned offer is more controllable than advertising. Options include:

 • Consulting or coaching
 • Freelance financial content or analysis
 • Courses and workshops
 • Paid reports and templates
 • Books and calculators
 • Events and professional memberships
 • Software or subscription tools

The podcast can function as customer acquisition for a higher-value service. Each episode should have one relevant call to action, such as downloading a worksheet, joining an email list, booking a consultation, or purchasing a template. Do not promise a specific income, investment result, credit score increase, or debt payoff outcome unless the evidence supports the claim and the conditions are made clear.

Paid memberships and subscriptions

Useful paid benefits include ad-free episodes, early access, subscriber-only episodes, bonus episodes, archive access, private feeds, live Q&As, and community access. Keep the free show useful; the paid tier should add a clear benefit rather than arbitrarily hiding the existing show.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, you must participate in the Apple Podcasters Program. In Apple Podcasts Connect, setup includes adding a promotional banner and icon, choosing a monthly price, optionally adding an annual price or free trial, providing a support site where required, adding subscriber audio to at least one show or episode, and submitting the subscription for review.

Apple requires benefits to provide ongoing value and match their description. It also prohibits charging for content that is available elsewhere for free at the same time in the same country or region. Annual pricing cannot exceed 12 times the monthly price.

Spotify for Creators currently lists these requirements for native subscriptions: the show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators, subscriptions must be available in your country or region, the show must have at least two published episodes, and it must have at least 100 Spotify listeners in the previous 60 days. Spotify also supports Open Access, which connects paid memberships from partner platforms such as Patreon or Supporting Cast to Spotify playback.

YouTube monetization

The expanded YouTube Partner Program can provide eligible creators with access to fan-funding and some Shopping features at:

 • 500 subscribers
 • Three valid public uploads in the past 90 days
 • Either 3,000 valid public watch hours from long-form videos in the past 12 months or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days

Advertising and YouTube Premium revenue require the higher threshold of 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days.

Apply at YouTube Studio → Earn → Apply Now → Start. You must accept the relevant terms and link or create an AdSense for YouTube account. Thresholds do not guarantee acceptance. YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour requirement; neither do private, unlisted, deleted, or ad-campaign views.

6. Avoid copyright and disclosure mistakes

Get permission or a license before using music, sound effects, film or television clips, news footage, photographs, artwork, guest-owned recordings, or third-party scripts. Giving credit does not usually create permission, and a short clip is not automatically fair use.

Copyright claims can affect distribution, YouTube podcast eligibility, and monetization. YouTube warns that podcast playlists may be ineligible for podcast features when they contain material the creator does not own.

Keep written records of music licenses, guest permissions, sponsor agreements, affiliate relationships, and any claims substantiating financial or product statements. That documentation is useful if a platform, sponsor, or listener challenges an episode.

7. Measure the business, not just the download count

Track these numbers by episode and by month:

 • Downloads or plays
 • Completion and retention
 • Follows and subscriptions
 • Listener geography and demographics
 • Traffic sources
 • Email signups
 • Call-to-action click-through rate
 • Affiliate conversions
 • Paid conversion rate
 • Revenue per episode
 • Sponsor renewal rate

A show with fewer listeners but a high email signup rate or strong service conversion may be healthier than a larger show that generates no action. Use a unique URL or discount code for each campaign so you can identify which episodes and placements produce results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube, use YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview and select the podcast. For deeper reporting, choose YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview → See Podcast Analytics. Available reporting includes performance, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention, and revenue data.

8. A simple first-90-day plan

 1. Days 1–14: Choose the audience, promise, format, schedule, and first revenue offer. Buy only the equipment needed for clear audio.
 2. Days 15–30: Record the trailer and first three episodes. Create artwork, show notes, disclosures, a landing page, and an email signup.
 3. Days 31–45: Publish or test the RSS feed, correct validation errors, and submit it to Apple, Spotify, and other relevant platforms.
 4. Days 46–75: Publish consistently. Turn each episode into clips, an email, and a written summary. Ask listeners one focused question to learn what they need.
 5. Days 76–90: Review retention, signups, clicks, conversions, and listener feedback. Improve the format and offer before adding more production costs.

FAQ

How many listeners do I need to make money from a podcast?

There is no universal minimum. You can earn from a service, affiliate offer, product, or membership with a relatively small but relevant audience. Platform thresholds are separate: Spotify currently lists 100 listeners in the past 60 days for eligible native subscriptions, while YouTube’s expanded Partner Program starts at 500 subscribers plus additional activity requirements. Eligibility does not guarantee meaningful income.

Can I upload an MP3 directly as a YouTube podcast?

Not through the normal YouTube Studio podcast workflow. YouTube defines a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos. You can upload full-length video episodes, or use YouTube’s RSS delivery option to create static-image videos from a podcast feed.

Does Spotify automatically submit my podcast to Apple Podcasts?

No. Spotify automatically makes a Spotify for Creators show available on Spotify, but you must submit its RSS feed separately to Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and other services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best way for a small podcast to make money?

Usually, start with the offer you control: a relevant service, digital product, affiliate recommendation, or membership. Sponsorships and platform advertising can become useful as the audience grows, but they should not be treated as guaranteed income. Match the offer to the listener’s problem and disclose any compensation clearly.

The Bottom Line

Start with a narrow audience and a useful promise, not expensive equipment or an advertising forecast. Publish a small batch of strong episodes, protect the RSS feed, distribute it deliberately, and build an email list you control. Then test one revenue path—usually a service, product, affiliate offer, or membership—while measuring conversions rather than downloads alone. Treat sponsorship and platform monetization as additional channels, not as the business plan.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
