Think & Learn Private Limited (TLPL), the company associated with the Byju’s brand, entered India’s corporate insolvency resolution process in July 2024 after the National Company Law Tribunal admitted a petition by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). An appellate settlement briefly overturned that order, but the Supreme Court restored it in October 2024. In the latest located update, dated 4 May 2026, the Supreme Court declined to interfere with an order restoring the original creditor committee and allowing an inquiry into the resolution professional to continue.
The proceedings concern TLPL, not an abstract valuation of the Byju’s brand. The often-cited $22 billion figure was a reported valuation during a 2022 funding round; it is not a current company valuation or a court finding.
What happened to Byju’s insolvency case?
The case has moved through the tribunal system in stages. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted BCCI’s insolvency petition against TLPL; the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) later set that admission aside after approving a settlement; and the Supreme Court then reversed the NCLAT ruling. A later dispute concerned the composition of TLPL’s committee of creditors (CoC) and an inquiry into the resolution professional (RP).
| Date | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 16 July 2024 | The NCLT admitted BCCI’s petition under Section 9 of India’s Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and initiated the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP). | The insolvency process began for TLPL. The Supreme Court’s subsequent account described BCCI’s petition as concerning approximately ₹158 crore in operational debt under a team sponsorship agreement. |
| 2 August 2024 | The NCLAT approved a settlement and set aside the NCLT’s admission order, according to the Supreme Court’s procedural history. | The appellate ruling temporarily removed the admission order. |
| 23 October 2024 | The Supreme Court set aside the NCLAT judgment. | The NCLT admission was restored. The Supreme Court did not decide the objections to the settlement on their merits in that appeal. |
| 29 January 2025 and subsequent appeal | As reported by Business Standard, the NCLT restored the original CoC after finding that the interim RP lacked authority to change its composition unilaterally; the NCLAT upheld that result. | The dispute over the creditor committee proceeded separately from the original question of admitting BCCI’s petition. |
| 4 May 2026 | The Supreme Court declined to interfere with the NCLAT decision on the CoC and said the inquiry into the RP should proceed expeditiously in accordance with law, as reported by Business Standard. | This is the latest located update; it is not evidence that a resolution plan or liquidation has been finalized. |
In reporting the October 2024 decision, the Supreme Court’s judgment noted that issues raised included matters before other forums and ongoing investigations. It set aside the NCLAT judgment without resolving the settlement objections on their merits.

Is Byju’s still in insolvency proceedings?
The latest located case update, published on 4 May 2026, describes the Supreme Court as declining to interfere with the order restoring the original CoC and permitting the RP inquiry to proceed. That update does not establish that the CIRP has concluded, nor does it confirm a resolution plan, sale, or final liquidation. Because it is not a live docket check, it should not be treated as confirmation of the case’s status after that date.
The distinction between the brand and the debtor matters: the petition and tribunal process described here concern Think & Learn Private Limited, the legal entity associated with Byju’s. The brand name alone does not identify every company, asset, or obligation that could be involved in a wider corporate group.

What does the $22 billion valuation mean?
Business Standard reported on 17 October 2022 that Byju’s raised $250 million from existing investors and that the company’s valuation remained at $22 billion. That is a reported fundraising valuation at that time. It is not an audited net-worth figure, a valuation determined by the insolvency court, or evidence of what TLPL or its assets could be worth or realize now.

The figures in reporting refer to different things: the amount BCCI said was due in its petition, and claims submitted by other creditors. A creditor’s filed claim is not automatically a tribunal-approved amount or a final award.

| Figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately ₹158 crore | Operational debt cited in the Supreme Court’s account of BCCI’s Section 9 petition. | The amount alleged in the petition as recounted by the Court, tied to a team sponsorship agreement; it should not be read as a final determination of all creditor claims. |
| More than ₹11,432 crore | GLAS Trust’s claim, as reported by Business Standard on 4 May 2026. | A creditor claim, not an amount shown here as finally allowed by the tribunal. |
| ₹47.12 crore | Aditya Birla Finance’s submitted claim as a lender, as reported by Business Standard on 4 May 2026. | A submitted claim, not a final award. |
Business Standard’s account of the 4 May 2026 hearing quoted the Supreme Court as saying, “This is now too much. This litigation has gone far beyond… Perfect order. NCLT, NCLAT, we will not interfere… The inquiry initiated against the RP shall proceed further expeditiously in accordance with law.” The report attributed the remarks to the Court.
