There is no reliably documented, independently verified figure for Brittney Griner’s net worth in the sources available here. A reported salary from one season, even a large one, cannot establish personal wealth without information about other income, taxes, assets, debts and expenses. The clearest public earnings figure is historical: the Associated Press reported in March 2022 that Griner earned more than $1 million per season playing in Russia at that time.
Is Brittney Griner’s net worth publicly known?
No reliable, attributable calculation establishes Griner’s total assets minus liabilities. That means a precise net-worth figure should not be treated as fact unless its publisher explains the calculation and supports it with verifiable financial information. The sources cited here do not establish her assets, debts or total endorsement income.
Net worth is not the same as salary or career earnings. Salary describes compensation for a period; net worth is a point-in-time measure of what someone owns minus what they owe. A public report about one source of income cannot by itself show how much money a person has retained or what they own.
What is known about Griner’s basketball earnings?
Reported Russian club salary
In March 2022, the Associated Press reported that Griner had played in Russia during WNBA offseasons for seven years and earned more than $1 million per season there—more than four times her WNBA salary at that time. This is a reported figure for Russian club seasons as of that 2022 report, not a current salary, a verified career total or a net-worth estimate. Associated Press report via NBA.com, March 6, 2022.

Her 2022 WNBA salary
In May 2022, the WNBA said Griner would receive her full 2022 salary while detained. The league also gave the Phoenix Mercury roster and salary-cap relief to sign a replacement player. The statement describes the league’s arrangement for that season; it does not disclose her total income or establish her wealth. WNBA update, May 3, 2022.
What later league pay figures mean
In March 2026, the WNBA and WNBPA announced a tentative collective bargaining agreement. The league projected a $7 million team salary cap, a $1.4 million maximum salary, an average salary of $583,000 and minimum salaries ranging from $270,000 to $300,000, depending on service. Those figures were projections tied to a tentative agreement, not Griner’s individual contract. WNBA announcement, March 20, 2026.

How Griner’s career and detention affected the story
Griner was selected first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2013 and played overseas during WNBA offseasons. In February 2022, Russian authorities alleged that a search at a Moscow airport found vape cartridges containing cannabis-derived oil in her luggage. The AP reported the authorities’ allegation; it should not be confused with an independently established finding here. Associated Press report via NBA.com, March 6, 2022.
In August 2022, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the verdict and sentence “unjustified and unfortunate” and said Griner remained “wrongly detained.” That was the commissioners’ public position, not a court finding. In December 2022, Russia released Griner in an exchange for Viktor Bout; Paul Whelan was not part of that exchange. Associated Press report via NBA.com, December 2022.

Griner returned to WNBA play after her release. The WNBA’s player profile records her move to Atlanta in 2025 after 11 seasons with Phoenix. What Griner has said about the experience
In a 2024 Associated Press interview about her memoir, Coming Home: A Memoir, written with Michelle Burford, Griner discussed her detention and life after returning. She said, “The only time I’ll go overseas is with Team USA.” The memoir recounts her experience and perspective; it is not evidence for a net-worth estimate. Associated Press, May 6, 2024.
