On March 25, 2011, Boeing held a topping-out ceremony for its new 787 interiors building in North Charleston, South Carolina, marking the placement of the structure’s final steel beam. The 300,000-square-foot facility was planned to manufacture interior components for 787s assembled in South Carolina.

What the final-beam ceremony marked

The final beam was the last steel beam placed during the building’s structural construction—not a sign that the facility was complete or open. Hundreds of construction workers and Boeing employees had signed the beam before it was raised. Boeing described the event as a milestone in construction.

Lane Ballard, director of Boeing’s Interiors Responsibility Center, said the milestone brought the team “one step closer to producing innovative 787 interiors for the South Carolina final assembly and delivery team.” He also praised the construction workers for their diligence. Both statements appeared in Boeing’s March 25, 2011 announcement.

Where the facility was and what it was for

Boeing said the 300,000-square-foot (27,871-square-meter) building was in Palmetto Commerce Park in North Charleston, about 10 miles from the Boeing South Carolina site. The company’s Interior Responsibility Center South Carolina team was to manufacture 787 interior parts there. Boeing said locating that work nearby would help make South Carolina final assembly and delivery more efficient.

Construction schedule and project partners

Boeing said construction began in September 2010 and was scheduled to continue through the fourth quarter of 2011, when the facility was expected to open. That opening date was a projection in the 2011 announcement, not confirmation of when the building actually opened. BRPH and Pattillo Construction Corporation were identified as the design-builders.
