Boeing’s 2026 contract deadline passed without a strike: members of both Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) bargaining units ratified four-year offers on October 1, five days before their existing agreements were due to expire. This was a vote by Boeing engineers and technical employees—not the IAM machinists referenced in the original headline.
Which Boeing workers were voting?
The negotiations were between Boeing and SPEEA, which represents engineers, scientists, designers, analysts and technicians. SPEEA’s Professional Unit and Technical Unit voted separately. These were not negotiations with the International Association of Machinists (IAM), so the result should not be read as an IAM machinist contract vote.
Reuters reported before the vote that the agreements were set to expire on October 6, 2026. A strike could have begun as soon as October 7 if members rejected the offer. Reuters’ pre-vote report described that as a possible outcome, not an event that took place.
What were the Boeing SPEEA contract vote results?
SPEEA announced that voting closed October 1 and that both units ratified their four-year agreements. The Technical Unit’s approval was closer than the Professional Unit’s.
#1 Best Overall
| SPEEA bargaining unit | Accepted | Rejected | Approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Unit | 7,895 | 3,780 | 67.62% |
| Technical Unit | 2,061 | 1,793 | 53.48% |
The figures are from SPEEA’s October 1, 2026 announcement. The result means the October 2026 deadline did not produce a strike by either of these units.
What did the ratified offer say about pay?
SPEEA’s September 14 summary of Boeing’s revised offer described an immediate guaranteed increase and later increases, including portions that were not guaranteed equally to everyone. Its figures are union calculations; individual application should be read in the ratified contract documents.

| Timing | Increase described by SPEEA |
|---|---|
| After ratification | 10% guaranteed wage increase |
| March 2027 | 4% guaranteed increase |
| 2028, 2029 and 2030 | Each year has a 6% wage pool: 4% guaranteed to everyone, with the remaining 2% allocated selectively by Boeing management |
SPEEA calculated that this structure would produce a 36.3% compound increase for the average Professional or Technical member over four years, with a 28.7% guaranteed minimum. Reuters described the revised offer differently: it reported the union’s estimate of an average 32% raise over four years, compared with 26.5% under Boeing’s first offer, and summarized the terms as a 10% increase on ratification, annual guaranteed increases of 4%, and possible 2% performance increases. These are distinct attributed summaries, not figures to combine into a single projection. See SPEEA’s offer summary and Reuters’ account.
How did the revised offer compare with the first offer?
The revised offer followed an earlier rejection. American Machinist reported that roughly 17,000 members rejected Boeing’s first offer in August. Its account said that offer included a four-year compounded wage increase of 29.4% and capped inflation-linked raises at 3%. Those figures describe the rejected proposal, not the ratified agreement. American Machinist’s report on the first vote provides that background.

Why was a possible strike a concern?
Before the vote, Reuters reported that a stoppage could halt Boeing certification campaigns for the 737 MAX 10 and 777-9 and disrupt efforts to increase jet deliveries. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said at a mid-September financial conference, “We’re working very hard to try to avoid any kind of work stoppage,” and said a strike would financially hurt Boeing. These were prospective risks described during negotiations; the ratifications meant they did not arise from this deadline.
