Its July 2026 update said the 777-9 had reached major milestones toward that goal, while remaining certification work was still required. The target is not a guarantee, and the reviewed sources do not verify who said Boeing was “very confident” or when.
What Boeing’s latest schedule says
Boeing’s July 16, 2026 program update described the 777-9 as achieving major certification milestones on the path to deliveries in 2027. The company said final type inspection authorization and other approvals remained before the first delivery. Reporting on Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 call likewise described the first 777-9 delivery as targeted for 2027 (FlightGlobal).
That makes 2027 the current stated target in the cited company update and call coverage—not a confirmed delivery date. The exact “Very Confident” wording in the headline cannot be attributed to a Boeing executive on the basis of the reviewed sources.
How the 777X delivery target changed
The schedule has shifted over time. Boeing’s 2024 annual report said the anticipated first 777-9 delivery had been delayed to 2026 after flight-test delays and a revised certification assessment (Boeing 2024 annual report). That was the company’s historical expectation, not its later target.
#1 Best Overall
On October 29, 2025, the Associated Press reported that CEO Kelly Ortberg moved the expected first 777X delivery from 2026 to 2027, citing certification delays (AP). Boeing’s July 2026 update subsequently continued to describe 2027 as the delivery goal.
Certification, delivery, and airline service are different milestones
Certification is regulatory approval for the aircraft; it does not itself mean an airline has taken delivery or begun carrying passengers on it. Reuters reported on February 3, 2026 that Boeing expected 777X certification in the second half of 2026. That was an expectation reported at the time, not confirmation that certification was completed (Reuters report republished by Investing.com).

After certification, the customer still has its own steps before the aircraft enters revenue service. Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Stephanie Pope told Reuters: “When we think about the difference between certification and entry into service, it’s really up to our customers when they take delivery of the aircraft and the processes and steps they need to go through between certification and ultimately revenue service for that aircraft.”
What an airline-specific forecast tells you
Emirates said it expected its first 777X in May or June 2027, Reuters reported on June 9, 2026 (Reuters). That is Emirates’ forecast for its own first aircraft. It does not establish when every 777X customer will receive aircraft, or when any carrier will begin revenue service.

The cited sources do not establish whether the FAA has since completed all required approvals or whether any airline’s forecast changed after the dates above. Until the required certification and customer steps are completed, 2027 should be read as Boeing’s target for first deliveries, not a settled date for airline service.
