He was not described as cutting ties with EA altogether: reports said he would remain an adviser and lead periodic innovation workshops.
What Gordon announced
Gordon joined EA in 1982 and announced his move on April 29, 2008. Contemporary coverage described his tenure as either 25 or 26 years; the start year and announcement date support the commonly reported description of about 26 years, not an exact anniversary calculation. He was expected to start at Kleiner Perkins in June. GamesBeat and the Los Angeles Times reported the transition on April 29, while Engadget covered the news the day before.
What he did at EA
Gordon joined EA in its early years, leading marketing and product development before serving as chief creative officer from 1998 to 2008. Kleiner Perkins’ current profile recounts his EA career and identifies him as an adviser at the firm; its historical account says he joined the EA team in 1982. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences later named him its fifth Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 2011, recognizing his contribution to interactive entertainment.
Why he wanted a new challenge
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gordon said, “I’ve done everything that I wanted to do in games and more,” and described wanting to do something “scary and new and exciting.” He saw game-design thinking as useful beyond video games: “I have this thesis that video game design thinking is going to change advertising, entertainment, communications, media and telephony.” He also said, “I’d like to take the thinking behind video game design and help a new generation of entrepreneurs make cool new stuff.”

What his Kleiner Perkins role involved
Reports described Gordon’s new work as investing in startups in consumer technology. His experience in games and entertainment was relevant to that remit, but the role was not described as limited to game companies. In its April 28, 2008 report, Engadget quoted Kleiner Perkins partner John Doerr calling Gordon’s experience in “dynamic and engaging digital entertainment and consumer media” valuable to innovators in areas including mobility, social networks, gaming and entertainment, as well as other consumer-facing fields.
He was expected to retain an EA connection
Although Gordon was leaving his EA executive post, contemporaneous reports said he planned to remain connected to the company as chief creative officer emeritus or an adviser and to lead periodic innovation workshops. Kleiner Perkins’ current profile labels him an adviser at the venture firm; that present-day label does not establish how long the reported EA arrangement lasted or whether its terms changed.
