How Birmingham City Made Money on Tahith Chong—and Why the Deal Could Have Been Different

Birmingham City’s reported £1.5m purchase and £4m sale of Tahith Chong imply a £2.5m gross fee uplift, but costs and a reported Manchester United sell-on clause complicate the picture.

Birmingham City paid Manchester United a reported fee of about £1.5 million for Tahith Chong in 2022, then sold him to Luton Town for a reported £4 million in 2023. That implies an approximate £2.5 million gross increase in transfer fees—not a verified net profit. Manchester United was also reported to have a sell-on clause, so Birmingham’s eventual share is not established by the public figures.

How Chong moved from Manchester United to Birmingham

Chong first joined Birmingham on loan from Manchester United for the 2021–22 season. Before that, he had spent time on loan at Werder Bremen and Club Brugge. BBC Sport reported that he made 13 Bundesliga appearances for Werder and 10 appearances for Brugge, helping the Belgian club win the First Division. BBC Sport’s 2021 report announced his season-long loan to Birmingham.

On 1 September 2022, BBC Sport reported that Birmingham signed Chong permanently for about £1.5 million on a five-year contract. The report noted that he was 22, had one year left on his Manchester United contract and had made 16 appearances for United. A retrospective Manchester Evening News report put Birmingham’s fee at £1.45 million, but the safer description is about £1.5 million: these are reported figures, not published contract terms. What Birmingham received when it sold him

On 14 July 2023, BBC Sport reported that Luton Town had signed Chong for £4 million. He was leaving after making 41 appearances and scoring four goals for Birmingham in the 2022–23 season, when the club finished 17th in the Championship. Luton had just been promoted to the Premier League. BBC Sport’s report on the Luton transfer

What the reported fees say—and what they do not

Transfer stage Reported fee What is known
Manchester United to Birmingham, 2022 About £1.5 million BBC Sport reported this fee; the five-year deal was also reported.
Birmingham to Luton, 2023 £4 million BBC Sport reported this fee; Chong had made 41 appearances and scored four goals for Birmingham in the previous season.
Simple difference between reported fees About £2.5 million Arithmetic based on the two BBC-reported figures, before costs or any sell-on accounting.

The £2.5 million figure is a gross fee uplift, not Birmingham’s audited profit. The cited reports do not account for wages, agent or transaction costs, add-ons, sell-on deductions or accounting treatment. They do not establish what Birmingham ultimately retained from the Luton deal.

Did Manchester United get a sell-on fee?

Secondary reports said Manchester United retained a sell-on clause when Chong moved to Birmingham. The Manchester Evening News reported that a clause was included; FootballTransfers attributed a 25% figure to The Athletic and estimated United would receive about £1 million from the reported £4 million Luton fee. The percentage and estimated payment are not confirmed public contract terms. The reports do not specify the clause’s calculation basis, so it would be misleading to treat 25% of the full reported fee as a confirmed deduction or to say Birmingham definitely kept £3 million.

Could Birmingham have earned more by keeping Chong?

The plausible alternative is that Birmingham could have kept Chong beyond the 2022–23 season instead of selling him to Luton that summer. His 41 appearances and four goals showed he had been a regular contributor, and his next club was a newly promoted Premier League side. Those facts make the timing a reasonable “what if,” but they do not show that a later sale would have attracted a higher fee.

The available reporting does not establish why Birmingham accepted Luton’s offer, whether another club made a higher bid, whether the transfer included add-ons, or what Chong’s value might have been after another season. Luton manager Rob Edwards said: “Tahith is someone that I, and the club, have known for a very long time,” and said closer observation at Birmingham showed Chong could play inside as a midfield player. That was Edwards’s view of Chong’s development and versatility, not evidence about Birmingham’s financial decision.
