Not automatically. Higher gasoline prices can improve the economics of a used Tesla, but they do not make every car with an advertised “free Supercharging” perk a good buy. First verify that the benefit belongs to the exact vehicle and survives the sale; then compare its price, condition, warranty and charging costs with your own driving needs.
What “free Supercharging” means for a used-car buyer
Do not rely on a listing, seller assurance or detached screenshot. Tesla says a prospective buyer can check a third-party vehicle’s Supercharging status only after the registered owner adds them as a driver in the Tesla app, or once the buyer becomes the registered owner. Ask the seller to add you before you pay a premium, then inspect the car’s Specs and Warranty information in the app. Tesla’s Supercharging support page explains access to this information.

Determine whether the car has a vehicle-linked charging entitlement or promotional credits. Tesla’s terms say promotional or referral credits expire at the end of their stated period or when the vehicle is sold or transferred, whichever comes first. Credits are redeemable only at Tesla-owned Supercharger sites; standard Supercharger fees apply once credits are used. Read the current Vehicle Charging Policy and Supercharger Fair Use Policy and confirm the specific car’s status rather than assuming all “free unlimited” claims have the same conditions. Tesla’s terms discuss free unlimited Supercharging or free charging for the lifetime of vehicle ownership for vehicles purchased new or used after December 15, 2017.
Free does not necessarily mean every charging stop is free. The benefit applies at Tesla-owned sites; third-party-owned Superchargers are pay-per-use. Site prices can change, and congestion fees may apply in specified circumstances, including to vehicles with free charging. Check Tesla’s Supercharger fee information and the pricing for routes you expect to drive.

What rising gasoline prices tell you—and what they do not
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly all-grades gasoline price was $4.496 per gallon for the week of October 5, 2026, in a release dated October 6. That is a dated national snapshot, not a forecast or a price you should assume at your local pump. In the same week, the EIA reported $5.866 per gallon on the West Coast and $4.014 on the Gulf Coast. Check the EIA weekly retail gasoline price table and use a local figure for your comparison.
To estimate the value of free charging, compare expected costs for the specific cars you are considering. For the gasoline alternative, use its fuel economy, your annual miles and local gasoline price. For the Tesla, account for energy use, home electricity rates, how much charging you would actually do at eligible Tesla-owned Superchargers, and any applicable fees. A driver who charges mostly at home or rarely road-trips may get little extra value from the perk; someone who drives many miles and regularly uses eligible Superchargers may value it more. Neither case guarantees savings.
Compare the whole ownership cost, not just fuel
Free Supercharging is only one part of the purchase calculation. Include the asking price, financing, taxes, insurance, expected repairs, tires, charging setup, electricity and resale assumptions over the time you expect to own the car. A lower fuel bill cannot, by itself, establish that a particular used Tesla is fairly priced or in sound condition. The available general Tesla policy and warranty information does not establish any individual car’s battery health, repair history, condition or market value; those need vehicle-specific records and inspection.

Warranty depends on the car and purchase channel
Tesla says a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle bought directly from Tesla receives any remaining original Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage and, after that expires, an additional Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty stated as one year or 10,000 miles, subject to terms. Remaining original Battery and Drive Unit coverage also applies to CPO vehicles. Tesla separately says the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers to a new owner when ownership is transferred through Tesla.

Quick Recap
A practical checklist before making an offer
- Get the vehicle details. Ask for the VIN, model year, mileage, asking price and the seller’s precise written description of the Supercharging benefit.
- Verify the benefit on the car. Have the registered owner add you as a driver in the Tesla app and check the vehicle’s Specs and Warranty information. Establish whether it is a credit or a vehicle-linked entitlement, and identify any time, mileage or transfer limits.
- Price your real charging pattern. Check Tesla app or site pricing for routes you use, and include home electricity, third-party sites and applicable congestion fees.
- Confirm warranty and condition. Compare the VIN-specific coverage and records with what the seller claims; distinguish Tesla CPO coverage from a private-party sale.
- Run a local ownership-cost comparison. Use your expected miles and ownership period, local gas and electricity prices, and the alternative vehicle’s fuel economy. Treat the October 2026 EIA figure as a snapshot, not a prediction that gasoline prices will keep rising.
- Make the price carry its share of the decision. Buy only if the verified benefit, vehicle condition, warranty and negotiated price make sense together. A genuine charging perk cannot rescue an overpriced or poorly documented car.
