Its “very strong” sales characterization refers to qualitative early performance, not a published preorder count. In May 2025, Ubisoft reported that the game had the franchise’s second-highest day-one sales revenue, behind Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and that its consumer spending and player count were clearly ahead of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at that point. Those comparisons show strong performance, but they do not tell us how many copies sold.
What does “very strong” sales mean?
“Very strong” is a qualitative description, not a sales figure. The precise original 2024 report behind that phrase—and its speaker, benchmark, and any underlying preorder count—has not been established in the available disclosures. It should not be treated as proof that Ubisoft announced a particular number of preorders or copies sold.
The clearest later evidence is Ubisoft’s own FY2024–25 results, published May 14, 2025. The company said Shadows generated the second-highest day-one sales revenue in Assassin’s Creed history, behind Valhalla, and set a record for Ubisoft day-one performance on the PlayStation digital store. These are publisher-reported comparisons, not unit totals. Ubisoft investor relations
Did Assassin’s Creed Shadows outsell Odyssey?
Ubisoft said in its May 2025 release that, “to date,” consumer spending on Shadows had clearly outperformed Odyssey, and that its player count had also outperformed Odyssey. The qualification matters: this was a comparison at that reporting point, using spending and player-count measures. It does not establish that Shadows had sold more copies than Odyssey over their full lifetimes.

Spending, revenue, players, and copies sold are different measures. Spending can include purchases beyond the base game; player count does not equal units sold. Ubisoft’s release did not state the absolute figures behind those comparisons, so there is no supported way to convert them into a copy total.
What other numbers has Ubisoft reported?
- 91/100 average across first-party stores: Ubisoft reported this in May 2025. It is an average based on PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam—not a critics’ score.
- 160 million hours played: Ubisoft reported this cumulative playtime in May 2025. It measures engagement, not sales.
- More than 30 million annual unique active players: Ubisoft reported this for the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise in FY2025–26. It is not a Shadows-specific figure and does not indicate copies sold.
None of these figures supplies the missing title-specific unit total. Ubisoft’s May 20, 2026 FY2025–26 release also reported company-wide IFRS 15 sales of €1,395.7 million and net bookings of €1,525.1 million; it noted that the prior-year fourth-quarter comparison included the Shadows release. Those company-wide totals cannot be used to calculate this game’s sales. Ubisoft investor relations

Has Ubisoft disclosed the total since launch?
A transcript of Ubisoft’s September 30, 2026 earnings call attributes remarks to CEO Yves Guillemot saying detailed Shadows sales had not been disclosed. The transcript describes the remarks as interpreted; it reports him characterizing the game’s performance as good among major Assassin’s Creed titles and saying it performed well. This supports the distinction between positive relative assessments and an unpublished absolute sales figure. Alpha Spread earnings-call transcripts
Ubisoft’s cited disclosures therefore support a strong launch by several relative measures, including day-one revenue ranking and performance against Odyssey as of May 2025. They do not establish a lifetime copy count, a preorder total, or a full-lifetime unit comparison with Odyssey.
