TechCrunch reported that Silver Lake Waterman led the round and that it valued Oyster at $1.2 billion. That figure is a reported financing valuation, not an independent estimate of Oyster’s present-day value.
What the Series D means
The financing was a new investment in Oyster, a company that provides global employment services. Oyster’s announcement said existing investors participated; TechCrunch identified Silver Lake Waterman as the lead investor and reported that Emergence Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, G2 Venture Partners, Georgian, and Stripes also joined the round. TechCrunch’s September 2024 report put Oyster’s total funding after the Series D at $286 million.
Those figures describe the round as reported in September 2024. The valuation is associated with the financing; it should not be read as a current market value or as an independently audited financial measure.
What Oyster does
Oyster describes its mission as helping companies hire people across borders. TechCrunch characterized it as a payroll and HR platform for distributed workforces, and reported that its offerings included Global Payroll, Visa Sponsorships, and local compensation insights. The report described Oyster’s global employment focus as covering more than 180 countries at that time; that historical figure does not establish current service availability in every country.

Oyster’s pitch is that employers can use its services to manage the complexities involved in employing people internationally. TechCrunch reported CEO Tony Jamous saying the company wanted to give businesses their own means to do global employment rather than expand into other HR areas. That is Oyster’s stated positioning, not evidence that its platform is superior to alternatives.
How the new funding fits Oyster’s history
TechCrunch reported that Oyster had raised $150 million in a 2022 Series C at a $1 billion valuation, preceded by a $50 million Series B at a $475 million valuation. Its September 2024 report said the new round brought cumulative funding to $286 million. These are reported financing figures, not a comparison of Oyster’s operating performance or a guarantee of future growth.

Oyster said the Series D would support its global customer base, accelerate its product roadmap, and scale its impact. TechCrunch likewise described plans to develop the platform and expand. Neither source establishes how the funding was ultimately spent or what results followed.
What Oyster’s impact figures do—and do not—show
In its announcement, Oyster said 40% of people hired through its platform were accessing opportunities that might otherwise have been inaccessible. It also said that in 2023 it facilitated $107 million in payments to full-time employees and contractors in emerging markets. These are company-published figures, not independently audited findings in the cited materials; they provide context about Oyster’s stated impact, but do not measure the Series D’s financial return.

How to interpret the reported valuation
A $1.2 billion valuation attached to a private-company funding round is a reported financing benchmark. It does not mean Oyster has that amount in cash, that its shares are readily available to ordinary investors, or that a buyer could sell the company for that price. The figure reported by TechCrunch reflects the financing context in September 2024 and does not establish Oyster’s current valuation.
The reporting named Deel, Papaya Global, Turing, and Remote as competitors, but did not provide a side-by-side comparison of product coverage, employment models, compliance services, or prices. A funding announcement alone is therefore not enough to determine which provider best fits an employer’s needs.
