Amazon announced on January 22, 2025, that it would close all seven of its Quebec warehouse facilities and completed its withdrawal from operating those warehouses. It shifted deliveries to local third-party companies; the announcement was not an end to Amazon.ca sales or Prime service in Quebec. The reasons for the closures remain disputed, and a separate class action over Prime delivery has been authorized but not decided.
What changed in Amazon’s Quebec operations?
Amazon announced the closures on January 22, 2025, saying the seven facilities would shut over the following two months. The Associated Press reported that the replacement delivery model returned Quebec to the approach Amazon had used there before 2020: local third-party companies would handle deliveries rather than Amazon operating its own provincial warehouse network. Canada’s National Contact Point (NCP) described the withdrawal in its June 2026 final statement.
The affected facilities were:
| Facility | Location |
|---|---|
| YUL2 | Lachine |
| YUL5 | Saint-Hubert |
| HYU1, an extra-large-item facility | Saint-Hubert |
| YUL9 | Coteau-du-Lac |
| DXT4 | Laval |
| DXT5 | Laval |
| DXT6 | Lachine |
Did Amazon stop serving Quebec customers?
No. The change concerned Amazon’s own warehouse operations in Quebec, not the end of Amazon.ca sales or Prime in the province. Amazon said it would use local third-party delivery companies. The sources do not establish that every order would arrive on the same schedule or under the same delivery conditions after the change.
For a specific purchase, the useful reference is the delivery estimate shown for that item and address when ordering, followed by the order’s tracking and delivery details. A general statement that Amazon still serves Quebec does not guarantee a particular delivery speed.

How many jobs were affected?
The Associated Press reported that about 1,700 permanent full-time jobs and 250 temporary positions were affected by the announced closures. Those are AP’s figures for positions affected. Separately, the NCP said Amazon Canada had more than 1,900 employees in Quebec as of early 2025. That broader employee count has a different scope and should not be added to, or treated as a direct restatement of, the AP estimate.
Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait told the Associated Press that the company was offering impacted employees “up to 14 weeks’ pay after facilities close” and transitional benefits, including job-placement resources. “Up to” does not mean every employee received 14 weeks; the quoted description does not spell out individual eligibility or package terms. Affected workers would need to rely on their own written offer and employment documents to understand their specific payment and benefits.

Why did Amazon close the warehouses?
Amazon and the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), the union involved in the dispute, give conflicting explanations. The timing is relevant context, but it does not by itself establish why the company made the decision.
| Issue | Amazon’s account | CSN’s account | What has been established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business rationale | According to the NCP, Amazon cited legitimate business considerations: an unexpected suspension of operations at one facility and the identification of a lower-cost alternative delivery model that could provide similar service. | CSN alleges the closures were a union-busting measure linked to union certification and collective bargaining at DXT4. | These are the parties’ competing accounts, not a finding that either explanation is true. |
| Union and bargaining timeline | Amazon denied union suppression and retaliation allegations, according to the NCP. | CSN says the union at DXT4 was certified on May 10, 2024, bargaining began in July, and talks were deadlocked by December 2024. | The union certification preceded the January 22, 2025 closure announcement. The chronology alone does not prove retaliation. |
| Review of the dispute | The NCP considered issues under the OECD Guidelines. | CSN brought concerns about the closures and their effect on workers’ rights. | The NCP identified freedom of association, collective bargaining, non-retaliation, and human-rights due diligence as relevant to forward-looking recommendations. It expressly said it did not determine whether Amazon acted consistently with the Guidelines or decide the specific factual dispute. |
The NCP said Quebec Administrative Labour Tribunal proceedings remained the primary venue for findings on facts, liability, and remedies. Its June 2026 final statement is not a tribunal ruling and does not validate either side’s account. The reviewed sources do not establish the final outcome of those labor proceedings.

What happened to the Prime delivery class action?
The Quebec Class Action Registry records that the Prime delivery case was authorized on May 8, 2026. The claim alleges that Quebec Prime members did not receive the promised two-day delivery after the warehouse closures while continuing to pay the full membership fee.
Authorization allows the case to proceed as a class action; it is not a judgment that the delivery allegation is true, a finding that Amazon breached an obligation, or an award of damages. The registry description does not establish the eventual result or any compensation for members.
