Amazon reported that renewable energy matched 100% of the electricity consumed by its global operations in 2023, reaching its original 2030 target seven years early. That is an annual accounting match—not proof that every Amazon facility ran on wind or solar power at every hour.
What Amazon’s 100% figure measures
Amazon’s July 2026 methodology defines the percentage as renewable energy from projects it enabled, plus renewable electricity in the grids where it operates, divided by the electricity consumed by its global business operations during the reporting year. The period runs from January 1 through December 31. Amazon says it aims to procure renewable electricity in the same grids where it consumes electricity, though procurement may occur elsewhere in some cases. Amazon’s methodology
In plain terms, the company tallies eligible renewable electricity against its annual electricity use. It is not a measure of whether renewable generators supplied each Amazon site in real time, nor does it mean the company produced all of its electricity itself.
Which operations are included—and how usage is counted
Amazon says the electricity boundary follows its Scope 2 electricity calculation and includes data centers, fulfillment network facilities, retail stores and corporate offices. It uses meter data and utility invoices as primary consumption records. When those are unavailable, it may estimate usage from electricity spending or comparable facilities, and scale estimates by factors such as square footage or business activity. Amazon’s methodology

How Amazon tracks renewable electricity
For electricity attributed to projects it enabled, Amazon says it retires, or has retired on its behalf, environmental attributes for each megawatt-hour claimed. These instruments include renewable energy certificates (RECs) in the United States and Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) in the European Union. They track the renewable attributes associated with generation; they do not by themselves show that the electricity physically traveled from a particular project to a particular Amazon building. Amazon’s 2023 report said it had more than 500 renewable-energy projects across 27 countries. Why annual matching is not the same as running on renewable power every hour
Renewable generation and electricity use do not necessarily happen at the same time or in the same place. A company can match annual electricity consumption with renewable generation and associated attributes without receiving that generation continuously at each facility. The Associated Press made this distinction in its coverage of Amazon’s 2023 report: matching electricity use with equivalent renewable purchases does not necessarily mean the purchases physically power the company’s operations. That is why a 100% annual match should not be read as a claim of 100% hourly or site-level renewable supply. When comparing companies’ claims, useful questions include whether the match is annual or hourly, how closely projects align with the grids where electricity is consumed, how renewable attributes are tracked and retired, and whether the claim covers electricity alone or broader emissions.

What the claim says about Amazon’s emissions—and what it does not
Electricity-related emissions are generally reported as Scope 2; direct emissions from sources a company owns or controls are Scope 1. Renewable electricity matching addresses the electricity accounting claim, not every source of operational emissions. The Associated Press reported that Amazon’s electricity emissions fell 11% in 2023 while its direct Scope 1 emissions rose 7%.
