Amazon did not announce that it was ending Prime Gaming when it reported layoffs in its games division in November 2023. Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann said the company would “refin[e]” the Prime benefit to focus more on free games each month. Amazon’s later descriptions show that Prime members continued to get monthly PC games and a Twitch channel subscription, with gaming benefits presented through Luna.
What Amazon announced in November 2023
On November 13, 2023, Thurrott reported that Amazon had laid off about 180 employees in its games division. The report said the company had eliminated around 100 jobs in the unit in April 2023. It attributed the strategy explanation to an email from Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann that Reuters had obtained. Thurrott’s contemporaneous report is the source for both the layoff figures and the quoted email.
Hartmann wrote that Amazon needed to focus resources on areas with the greatest potential to grow the business. He said the company had heard that customers most wanted free games each month and was refining the Prime benefit to increase its focus there. That describes a shift in emphasis; it is not an announcement that every other Prime Gaming perk would be removed.
At the time, the report described Prime Gaming as including in-game content, downloadable games, one monthly Twitch channel subscription, and—within the US, UK, Canada, and Germany—a rotating selection of Luna cloud games. It also said members needed an active Prime membership to claim games, but retained claimed games after cancelling. Those are details reported in 2023, not a guarantee that every offer or claiming rule still applies.

Did Amazon get rid of Prime Gaming?
No. Amazon’s later materials describe gaming benefits for Prime members through Luna rather than confirming that the benefit was cancelled. In an October 23, 2025 Luna FAQ, Amazon said Prime members could access a rotating selection of downloadable PC games each month wherever Prime was available, and that the monthly Twitch subscription previously offered through Prime Gaming remained available. Amazon’s Luna FAQ listed cloud-delivered games in 14 countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
Amazon’s current gaming homepage describes a rotating selection of games included with Prime through Luna, while its UK help page describes free games and a monthly Twitch channel subscription where available. Availability and the way games are delivered depend on the benefit and location; a cloud-gaming offer is not the same as a downloadable PC game. Amazon Luna and Amazon UK’s Prime Gaming help page provide the current service descriptions.

How the offer changed over time
| When | What Amazon or the report described | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| November 2023 | Thurrott reported about 180 Amazon Games layoffs and quoted Hartmann’s email on refocusing Prime Gaming on monthly free games. The report listed in-game content, downloadable games, a monthly Twitch subscription, and Luna cloud games in four countries. | A strategic refocus was announced; cancellation of the other perks was not confirmed. |
| October 2025 | Amazon’s Luna FAQ described monthly downloadable PC games wherever Prime was available, cloud games in 14 named countries, and the monthly Twitch subscription. It also described an included Luna library of more than 50 games and a GameNight collection of more than 25 local multiplayer games. | The game counts reflect Amazon’s launch FAQ and can change; Amazon said the library would evolve and some games would periodically leave. |
| July 2026 | Amazon announced Luna access inside the Prime Video app on Fire TVs in the US and UK, with games launched from a Games tab using a controller or phone. | This integration was announced for those countries and devices; it does not establish availability on every TV or in every country. |
What Prime members can play through Luna
Amazon’s October 2025 FAQ described two distinct types of access: downloadable PC games that Prime members could claim monthly, and cloud-delivered games available in a more limited set of countries. The FAQ’s figures—more than 50 games in the included Luna library and more than 25 GameNight titles—were dated catalog counts, not fixed guarantees. Amazon said the library would change and some games would leave periodically.
In its July 23, 2026 announcement, Amazon said Prime members in the US and UK could open the Prime Video app on Fire TVs, choose the Games tab, and start Luna games without a download or separate purchase to begin playing. Amazon listed Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 26, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle among the available games. The announcement is specific to Prime Video on Fire TVs in those two countries; it should not be read as a promise that the same access point or titles are available everywhere. Amazon’s July 2026 announcement has the details.

Do you need a Luna Controller?
No. Amazon says supported Bluetooth controllers can be paired with Luna. For GameNight, Amazon also describes phone touch controls. The dedicated Luna Controller is therefore an optional accessory, not a requirement for receiving Prime gaming benefits. Amazon’s Luna controller and device help page covers supported ways to play.

The November 2023 report connected the cuts to Amazon’s decision to put more emphasis on monthly free games. It also estimated that Amazon had cut approximately 27,000 jobs since announcing significant cuts in November 2022; that was a contemporaneous estimate in the 2023 report, not a current company headcount. The later Amazon FAQs and announcements establish that gaming benefits continued in the forms they describe, but they do not independently verify the 2023 layoff figures or Hartmann’s email.
