Amazon began UK e-cargo-bike deliveries from a micromobility hub in Hackney, east London, announced in July 2022. It added hubs in Manchester and London later that year. Amazon’s 2025 reporting says its network had reached 12 hubs in five UK cities; a London Assembly report identifies the company’s covered four-wheeled cargo bike as an EAV 2Cubed.
When did Amazon start using e-cargo bikes in the UK?
Amazon announced its first UK micromobility hub in Hackney in July 2022, working with the London Borough of Hackney. The company said e-cargo bikes and walkers from the hub were expected to make more than one million customer deliveries a year, directly replacing thousands of traditional van trips on London roads. Those were announced targets, not a verified count of completed deliveries. Amazon’s July 2022 announcement also referred to five million annual deliveries across central London, but that figure covered electric vans, e-cargo bikes and walkers together—not bikes alone.
Where are Amazon’s e-cargo-bike deliveries?
In November 2022, Amazon announced three more micromobility hubs in Manchester and London. The expansion brought Amazon e-cargo-bike deliveries to Manchester for the first time and added hubs in Wembley and Southwark, which the company said would more than triple the bike fleet making deliveries across the capital. Amazon projected that e-cargo bikes and walkers would together make more than two million UK deliveries annually; the announcement did not establish that this projection was later achieved. Amazon’s November 2022 expansion announcement placed the rollout within a stated five-year, £300 million investment in electrifying and decarbonising its UK transport network. That investment figure is not a measured carbon saving.
In reporting updated with end-of-2025 information, Amazon said it had 12 micromobility hubs across five UK cities: London, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast and Norwich. The report does not give a hub-by-hub breakdown by city. Amazon’s 2025 UK delivery update also reported more than 150 million deliveries using electric vans and cargo bikes since 2022. That combined total does not isolate e-cargo-bike deliveries.

What kind of cargo bike does Amazon use?
A Greater London Authority Economy Committee report published in April 2023 identifies a pictured covered, four-wheeled Amazon vehicle as the EAV 2Cubed, made by British manufacturer EAV. The report calls the model a common electrically assisted cargo bike used by some large delivery companies in London. This supports identifying that pictured vehicle as an EAV 2Cubed; it does not establish that every Amazon cargo bike uses that model. The committee report describes the 2Cubed as bridging the gap between a van and a bike.
Amazon’s later, general e-bike figures do not name the EAV 2Cubed. In its 2025 reporting, Amazon gave these operating specifications for its e-bikes:

These are company-reported specifications, not independent test results, and should not be treated as model-specific specifications for the EAV 2Cubed.
What do cargo bikes replace—and where do they fall short?
A micromobility hub gives small electric vehicles and on-foot delivery teams a local starting point, making it possible to serve nearby addresses without sending a traditional van for every delivery route. Amazon’s launch announcements described the bikes and walkers as replacing some van trips, while its later combined delivery figure includes electric vans as well as cargo bikes. The published totals therefore do not show how many van journeys cargo bikes alone have displaced.

Cargo bikes are not suitable for every delivery. The London Assembly committee report notes that suitability depends on the load and type of trip. Bulky or heavy consignments and routes that do not fit a bike’s capacity or operating needs may still call for another delivery method. The available figures do not provide a quantitative, like-for-like comparison of costs or emissions for bikes, electric vans and walking deliveries.

The London Assembly Economy Committee’s 2023 report recounted testimony from Dr Norman that UK cargo-bike sales rose 37 per cent in 2021. In the same discussion, the report cited 103,000 cargo bikes sold in Germany and 4,000 in the UK in 2021. These are figures presented in the committee’s account of testimony, not a newly verified market census. They provide context for the sector’s relative scale, but do not measure Amazon’s fleet or delivery volume.
