The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found Amazon responsible under federal product-safety law for more than 400,000 products sold by third-party sellers and ordered the company to address them. The dispute began with a CPSC complaint in 2021, became an agency determination in July 2024, and was challenged by Amazon in court by March 2025. Those are separate steps—not a single recall announcement—and the available reporting does not establish the lawsuit’s final outcome.

What the CPSC said was hazardous

The products named by the CPSC involved three different safety failures:

  • Carbon monoxide detectors: Faulty detectors that failed to alarm.
  • Children’s sleepwear: Garments that violated federal flammability standards.
  • Hair dryers: Products without required immersion protection against shock and electrocution.

In its July 14, 2021 announcement, the CPSC identified 24,000 faulty carbon monoxide detectors and nearly 400,000 hair dryers, along with children’s sleepwear. These are product counts, not counts of injuries or people harmed. The CPSC’s July 30, 2024 announcement said more than 400,000 products were subject to its order; that agency figure should not be confused with an injury count or treated as the same breakdown as the 2021 figures. CPSC’s 2021 announcement; CPSC’s 2024 determination.

How the case unfolded

Date What happened What it means
July 14, 2021 The CPSC announced an administrative complaint concerning hazardous products sold on Amazon.com. The complaint sought action; it was not yet the agency’s later determination.
July 30, 2024 The CPSC announced that it had found Amazon responsible under federal safety law for more than 400,000 products sold by third-party sellers. This was the agency determination and order at the center of the later dispute.
By March 19, 2025 Amazon had sued the CPSC over the order, according to the Associated Press. Amazon disputed being treated as a distributor and said it had taken steps to protect customers. The reported lawsuit means the dispute was being contested; it does not establish a final court ruling. Associated Press report.

In 2021, the CPSC said it sought to stop sales, work with Amazon on recalls, notify purchasers directly, and offer full refunds. The 2024 determination was a later procedural step, not simply a repeat of the original complaint.

How to check whether your Amazon purchase is affected

  1. Identify the item. Find its product name, brand, and model number on the item, packaging, order details, or instruction manual.
  2. Search official recall information. Check the CPSC’s recall page and compare the notice’s product identifiers with yours. CPSC also directs consumers to SaferProducts.gov to check recalls and report incidents or injuries.
  3. Match the details, not just the category. A product being a carbon monoxide detector, hair dryer, or children’s sleepwear does not by itself confirm it is included. Look for the brand, model, and other identifiers in the specific notice.
  4. Follow the notice if it matches. Use the remedy and instructions stated in that recall notice. Do not assume a replacement, refund, or repair is available unless the notice says so.

If you own a product that matches a recall

Follow the recall notice’s safety instructions and remedy. If the item is a carbon monoxide detector confirmed to be affected, make sure your home has a working alarm while you follow the notice; verify any replacement model against the applicable safety information rather than relying on a marketplace listing alone. If the product caused an incident or injury, the CPSC says consumers can report it through SaferProducts.gov.

The CPSC’s 2021 release urged consumers to check SaferProducts.gov for recalls before purchasing and to report incidents or injuries. Current recall listings can change, so check the official notice for the exact item rather than relying only on an older headline or order summary.
