Finnair has agreed to buy 18 Embraer E195-E2s for its regional fleet, with options for 16 more and purchase rights for 12. The airline says the jets will strengthen connections to and from Finland and feed its long-haul network. But the announcement does not show that Finnair rejected the Airbus A220 in a formal contest: Finnair has not published a head-to-head evaluation, and it still plans to add used Airbus narrowbodies for a separate replacement need.
What Finnair ordered—and what it did not
Finnair’s March 23, 2026 agreement covers 18 firm Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, plus options for 16 and purchase rights for 12. If it exercises every option and right, the agreement could cover as many as 46 aircraft; only the 18 firm orders are committed in the announcement. Finnair separately plans to source up to 12 used Airbus A320/A321ceos.
The two parts address different fleet needs. Finnair says the E195-E2s are primarily intended to replace ageing aircraft and strengthen regional flying. Used A320/A321ceos are meant to bridge the timing gap between retirement of the oldest A319s and A320s and the availability of new aircraft. This is a mixed renewal plan, not evidence that Finnair is abandoning Airbus.
Why Finnair says the E195-E2 fits
Regional connections and long-haul feed
Finnair says the E195-E2 will serve domestic and European routes, connecting passengers to and from Finland and feeding the airline’s long-haul network. The airline says the aircraft’s range will cover all its European destinations, including Portugal, Spain and Greece. Norra, Finnair’s regional partner, is planned to operate the jets.

Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto described the rationale this way: “The Embraer E195-E2 is a great match for our needs, enabling a stronger regional network that both strengthens connectivity to and from Finland, and efficiently feeds our long-haul network”.
Capacity and planned passenger features
Finnair’s planned E195-E2 cabin has 134 seats, arranged two abreast, with a USB charging port at each seat, high-speed internet, deeper overhead bins and three toilets. The airline says the aircraft will have a quieter, more spacious cabin and longer range than its current Embraer aircraft. These are planned features; the E195-E2s have not yet entered Finnair service.

Efficiency and financial flexibility
Finnair says the E195-E2 uses more than 30% less fuel per seat than the previous-generation E190-E1. That is the airline’s stated comparison, not an E195-E2-versus-A220 result or an independently tested finding here. Embraer’s announcement uses a different formulation, claiming “up to 35%” against the previous-generation aircraft.
Finnair presents the new jets and used Airbus aircraft together as a way to support growth, profitability, capital efficiency and operational continuity. It says the used-aircraft bridge helps match retirements to fleet availability. Its investor materials place the fleet investment within a previously communicated €2.0–€2.5 billion investment range for the strategic period; that range is not the purchase price of the E2 order. Finnair has not disclosed an E2 contract price or financing breakdown in the cited announcement.

Did Finnair reject the Airbus A220?
The available official announcements do not establish that Finnair formally evaluated and rejected the A220, or disclose a comparative bid scorecard. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Finnair selected the E195-E2 for the regional role it described, while also planning to use Airbus A320/A321ceos for a different fleet-replacement requirement.
That distinction matters because an order alone cannot show why one manufacturer won over another. Finnair has not published comparable A220 and E195-E2 figures for its own proposed terms, including purchase or lease costs, delivery availability, operating economics or the precise network assignment. Its fuel-efficiency claim compares the E2 with its E190-E1s, not with the A220.

When the aircraft are expected—and what may change
Finnair scheduled E195-E2 deliveries to begin in the second half of 2027. Its passenger-facing introduction describes the first aircraft as expected in autumn 2027. The March announcement scheduled three firm-aircraft deliveries in 2027, six in 2028 and six in 2029; those figures account for 15 of the 18 firm orders, and the announcement did not specify the remaining three in that schedule.
For the Airbus bridge, Finnair said it planned to source as many as 12 used A320/A321ceos. In its July 2026 half-year report summary, it reported letters of intent to lease six A320ceos. Letters of intent are not the same as aircraft delivered or a completed acquisition. Fleet sourcing, delivery schedules and option exercises can change.
