Amazon’s August 2025 rollout added perishable groceries to Same-Day Delivery in more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns. Amazon later reported that coverage had grown to more than 2,300 cities and towns, with further expansion continuing in 2026. Availability still depends on the delivery address, items in stock, and checkout options.
What changed with Amazon Same-Day Delivery?
Eligible shoppers can add fresh groceries to a Same-Day Delivery order that may also contain other Amazon items. Before the rollout, grocery shopping through Amazon could involve a separate grocery service or trip; the change lets customers combine qualifying perishables with other same-day purchases in one order.
Amazon announced the initial expansion in August 2025, saying the service reached more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns. The company’s later update reported coverage in more than 2,300 cities and towns and said expansion would continue in 2026. These are Amazon-reported city and town counts, not independently audited figures or confirmation that every address in those places qualifies. Amazon’s 2025 announcement and its later coverage update describe the rollout.
What groceries can you order?
Amazon’s initial examples included bananas, milk, eggs, and bread. Its later update described thousands of fresh grocery items, including dairy, produce, baked goods, and frozen food. These categories do not guarantee that a particular product is available locally: selection and stock vary by address.

Amazon’s grocery overview lists five location-dependent ways to shop: Same-Day Delivery, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Now, and local grocery and specialty retailers. These are distinct options, and the company does not provide a complete apples-to-apples comparison of delivery windows, fees, minimums, or membership rules for all five. See Amazon’s grocery options for the services it lists.
Does Amazon Same-Day grocery delivery require Prime?
Amazon’s 2025 announcement said Prime members could receive free Same-Day Delivery on qualifying grocery orders over $25. A recent Kiplinger comparison also describes a $25 threshold. Treat that as the stated qualifying order amount, not a guarantee that every grocery order or delivery address qualifies. Current eligibility, fees, and minimums can change and should be confirmed at checkout.

How to check availability and place an order
- Open the Amazon app or website and set the delivery address you want to use.
- Search for a grocery item, such as bananas, milk, eggs, or bread, and check whether it is available for Same-Day Delivery at that address.
- Add eligible groceries and any other qualifying Same-Day items to your cart. Review the delivery option, available window, minimum order, and any fee shown at checkout.
- Confirm the order details before purchasing. If a grocery item or Same-Day option does not appear, try another product or delivery address, or check Amazon’s other grocery services for local availability.
A city-level coverage announcement cannot establish availability at a specific home or business. The address and the options shown for the actual cart are the practical checks.

Combining groceries with other items may make one order more convenient, but convenience alone does not establish that it costs less than another grocery option. Compare the cart’s item prices, delivery charge, minimum, and any membership cost with the alternatives available to you. Because Amazon’s inventory, terms, and delivery windows vary by location and can change, base the comparison on the checkout total rather than the city-count headline.
