Amazon planned to close its Fresh Pickup site in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood in January 2023, saying it would focus on nearby Amazon Fresh stores. The SoDo pickup site remained open then, but closed in December 2023, ending the two-location Seattle experiment. The closures mark the end of a local grocery-pickup format—not proof that the Ballard closure by itself ushered in a new era of grocery shopping.
Why did Amazon close the Ballard Fresh Pickup site?
Amazon’s stated reason was that closing Ballard would let it “further focus on other nearby Amazon Fresh grocery stores.” The company said customers could instead order Amazon Fresh for delivery or pick up groceries at another store. GeekWire reported the planned closure on January 11, 2023; at that point, Seattle’s SoDo Fresh Pickup location was still operating. GeekWire’s January 2023 report does not establish that Ballard was unprofitable or explain its performance, so those should not be treated as the reason for the decision.
What was Amazon Fresh Pickup?
Fresh Pickup was a physical, pickup-only grocery format. Customers ordered groceries online, reserved a pickup time, and employees loaded the order into their car at the site. Amazon opened two Seattle locations in 2017: Ballard and SoDo. The format did not expand beyond those two sites, according to Retail Dive’s January 2024 account.
When did the Seattle locations close?
- Ballard: Amazon planned its closure in January 2023. SoDo continued operating after Ballard closed.
- SoDo: The remaining pickup-only site closed in December 2023. Its closure ended Amazon’s Seattle Fresh Pickup format.
The sequence matters: the Ballard closure reduced the local service from two pickup sites to one; it was the later SoDo closure that ended the Seattle experiment.

What grocery options did Amazon describe after the closures?
When it announced the Ballard closure, Amazon pointed customers to Amazon Fresh delivery or pickup from another store. In November 2023, Amazon said customers in U.S. cities and towns where Amazon Fresh was available to Prime members could use delivery and free pickup, and it also described delivery from participating local grocery and specialty retailers. Those were company-reported service terms at the time, not a guarantee that a particular service, pickup window, fee, or inventory is available at a Seattle address today. See Amazon’s November 2023 announcement.
For a current alternative, check service availability using the delivery address or ZIP code you actually plan to use, then confirm whether the provider offers pickup or delivery, any membership requirement or fee, available time slots, and the groceries it carries. Historical reporting identified traditional grocery-store click-and-collect, including Fred Meyer, as a comparable category; it does not confirm current service at any specific address.

How does the later Amazon store strategy fit in?
In January 2026, Amazon announced that it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores and convert various locations into Whole Foods Market stores. The company said it had not created a sufficiently distinctive customer experience with the right economic model for large-scale expansion. It also said Amazon Fresh online shopping would continue in areas where available. This later company-wide decision provides context for Amazon’s physical grocery strategy, but it was not the reason Amazon gave for the specific Ballard closure in 2023. Amazon’s January 2026 announcement reports more than 550 Whole Foods Market locations and plans for more than 100 additional stores over the following years; those are company figures and plans, not independent measurements.
