Not in the sense of the former airline returning to service. The Air Italy that stopped flying in February 2020 is distinct from Aeroitalia, the active carrier that announced it had chosen the Air Italy name. Aeroitalia’s official 2026 materials still identify the operating company as Aeroitalia, and the former Air Italy’s liquidators disputed Aeroitalia’s right to use the trademark. The available sources do not establish a final legal resolution.
Are Air Italy and Aeroitalia the same airline?
No. The former Air Italy and Aeroitalia are separate airline histories. The former Air Italy stopped flying in February 2020, according to Corriere’s 5 October 2025 report. Aeroitalia is the active carrier identified in its 2026 service charter.
A proposed shared name does not by itself mean the former airline’s operations, company identity, or trademark rights transferred to Aeroitalia. The name announcement and the dispute over the mark are separate from whether Aeroitalia operates flights today.
Why did Aeroitalia announce the Air Italy name?
In an interview published on 27 September 2025, Aeroitalia CEO Gaetano Intrieri said: “Ho registrato il marchio Air Italy e scelto questa nuova denominazione” (“I registered the Air Italy trademark and chose this new name”). la Repubblica’s interview also reported that a court order required Aeroitalia to change its name and branding, with 1 January 2026 cited as the required date while discussions over timing were under way.

That is the CEO’s account of Aeroitalia’s choice and claim; it does not prove that the former Air Italy transferred its trademark portfolio or authorized its use.
Why was Aeroitalia’s use of the mark disputed?
In October 2025, the former Air Italy’s liquidators said the company had not transferred its Air Italy trademark portfolio, had not authorized use of the mark, and had no agreement with Aeroitalia. Corriere reported that Aeroitalia’s application was under examination at that time.

What changed in 2026—and what name should passengers look for?
Aeroitalia’s 2026 service charter says the company unveiled a new livery on 4 March 2026 and began a rebranding programme. It names the first aircraft in that livery as Boeing 737-700 registration 9H-SIL, while identifying the company as Aeroitalia. This documents a livery change and a rebranding programme; it does not establish that the airline had completed a relaunch as Air Italy.

How does Aeroitalia connect with ITA Airways?
On 22 July 2026, Aeroitalia announced that it and ITA Airways had begun selling interline itineraries across their networks for the remainder of Summer 2026 and Winter 2026/27. The announcement says travelers can book itineraries through ITA’s website and sales channels that connect its wider network with Aeroitalia destinations, including Sardinia, Sicily, and Genoa. It also describes onward connections to ITA domestic destinations through Aeroitalia’s indirect sales channels. At the time of the announcement, technical work for web sales of international connections was still to be completed.
This is a booking and network cooperation announcement, not evidence that the two airlines—or Aeroitalia and the former Air Italy—are the same company. See Aeroitalia’s announcement for the details it published.
