Air New Zealand’s BETA ALIA CX300 Makes Its First Test Flight in New Zealand

The BETA ALIA CX300’s first test flight in New Zealand launched an operational-demonstrator programme, not a passenger service. Air New Zealand later reported more than 100 flights across 12 airports or aerodromes.

Air New Zealand’s BETA ALIA CX300 made its first test flight in New Zealand from Tauranga Airport on 17 October 2025. The flight began a technical-demonstrator programme—not a scheduled passenger service—to assess how battery-electric aircraft might operate within the country’s airports, airspace and airline workflows.

What is the BETA ALIA CX300?

The CX300 is BETA Technologies’ battery-electric ALIA aircraft. Air New Zealand partnered with the US aircraft developer to operate it in New Zealand as a technical demonstrator. The airline’s announcement described the Tauranga flight as the aircraft’s first test flight in New Zealand; it did not say this was the aircraft’s first flight ever. Air New Zealand’s 17 October 2025 announcement gives that local context.

The aircraft’s role in the programme was to help assess operational questions: how it performs in local conditions and how electric aircraft might fit into existing airports, airspace and airline processes. Air New Zealand had previously cited a test flight of more than 480 kilometres in an announcement about ALIA testing; that historical figure is not the New Zealand demonstrator’s range. The 2023 announcement describes that earlier test context.

Was the Tauranga flight a commercial airline service?

No. It was a test flight within a technical-demonstrator effort, not a scheduled passenger flight or a commercial cargo operation. Air New Zealand and BETA formally launched the Next Generation Aircraft technical demonstrator programme on 6 November 2025. The announced programme was planned as a four-month series of flights, starting from Hamilton and travelling through Taupō, Napier and Palmerston North toward Wellington, with Cook Strait crossings to Blenheim to follow. The programme launch announcement sets out that plan.

What did the demonstrator programme achieve?

On 17 February 2026, Air New Zealand said the programme’s first phase had completed more than 100 flights, covered 13,000 kilometres and visited 12 airports or aerodromes across the North and South Islands. The airline reported that two of its pilots and eight BETA pilots flew the aircraft. These are programme totals reported by Air New Zealand, not independent performance-test results. The phase-completion announcement provides the figures.

The totals describe the breadth of the demonstration activity, but they do not establish passenger readiness, emissions savings or lower operating costs. The stated aim was to learn how this technology and aircraft could work within New Zealand’s operating environment.

What regulatory approval did the aircraft have?

New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority approved the CX300 for demonstration flights under specified conditions. The CAA said its approval followed 15 months of work to understand the aircraft and obtain safety assurance from BETA. That approval was for the demonstration activity; it is not evidence of blanket approval for unrestricted commercial passenger or cargo airline service. The CAA’s approval notice describes its scope.

How does the trial differ from the proposed Wellington–Blenheim cargo flights?

The demonstrator and the proposed cargo service are separate activities. The first was an operational-learning programme across multiple airports; the second was a planned commercial cargo operation between Wellington and Blenheim in partnership with NZ Post.

When announcing the plan, Air New Zealand General Manager, Fleet, Networks and Strategy Baden Smith said the aim was to “understand how this new technology performs in New Zealand before the battery-electric commercial aircraft arrives in 2026 to fly cargo between Wellington and Blenheim.” The announcement framed the cargo operation as a future objective. The information cited here does not verify whether that service subsequently began.
