Air Canada began cancelling flights on August 14, 2025, ahead of a cabin-crew strike that started August 16. The planned shutdown covered Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge; Air Canada said Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines were not affected at that stage. The dispute was later resolved through arbitration, with a new agreement finalized February 19, 2026, according to the Government of Canada.

Why Air Canada cancelled flights in August 2025

On August 13, 2025, Air Canada said CUPE had issued a 72-hour strike notice and that the airline had issued a lockout notice. It announced a phased wind-down: cancellations would start August 14, increase August 15, and Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge service would stop August 16. Air Canada said Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines were unaffected at that point. These were the airline’s announced plans, not a guarantee that every individual itinerary was treated alike. Air Canada’s August 13 announcement

Air Canada described its regular schedule as about 700 flights a day and estimated that about 130,000 customers could be affected for each day the suspension continued. Those were the company’s estimates of potential disruption, not a confirmed count of passengers who ultimately experienced it. On August 16, Air Canada said the strike began at 12:58 a.m. Eastern Time and its lockout began at 1:30 a.m. It also said 10,000 flight attendants were represented by CUPE. Air Canada’s August 16 update

Air Canada’s then-president and chief executive, Michael Rousseau, described the shutdown as the airline’s “only responsible course of action” in light of what he called the union negotiators’ conduct and stated strike intention. That was the airline executive’s position, not an independent finding about the dispute. Air Canada’s August 13 announcement

What to do if your flight is cancelled

During the disruption, Air Canada said it would notify customers whose flights were cancelled and that eligible customers could receive a full refund. It also said it had arranged alternative travel with other carriers where possible, while warning that those airlines were already heavily booked. The carrier advised passengers to check flight status and not go to the airport unless they had confirmed travel on another airline. Air Canada’s August 13 announcement

For an affected itinerary, keep the cancellation notice, booking confirmation, receipts and records of your communications. Check the airline’s current instructions and your flight status before travelling to the airport. If you need a refund or believe the airline did not meet its obligations, make a written request to the carrier and retain a copy.

Refunds, rebooking and compensation are different rights

A refund for unused travel, a free replacement flight and cash compensation for inconvenience are separate remedies. Which rules apply depends on the circumstances of the disruption. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) explains the current Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) framework in its guide to flight delays and cancellations.

Refund for unused travel

Air Canada’s 2025 notice said customers with cancelled flights would be eligible for a full refund. For a specific claim, check the terms and applicable passenger-protection rules rather than assuming that the airline’s historical notice determines every case.

Free rebooking

Under the CTA’s current guidance, when a disruption is outside a large airline’s control, it must rebook the passenger on its next available flight or on an airline with which it has a commercial agreement, departing from the original airport within 48 hours. If it cannot do that, it must rebook on any airline; where an option exists, that can include departure from another nearby airport. The relevant obligation is rebooking, not an automatic cash payment.

Compensation for inconvenience

Compensation is conditional. The CTA says it applies only when the disruption is fully within the airline’s control and not required for safety; the passenger was notified 14 days or less before departure; the passenger arrived at least three hours late; and the passenger filed a written claim within one year. A strike-related cancellation does not automatically qualify for inconvenience compensation.

What the regulator later found

On March 30, 2026, the CTA announced a $426,000 penalty against Air Canada for specific APPR violations associated with the August 2025 disruption. The agency said that between August 15 and 20, Air Canada failed in some cases to provide a refund or qualifying rebooking at the passenger’s choice. The penalty concerns the violations identified by the CTA; it is not a decision on every individual passenger’s claim. CTA enforcement notice

How the cabin-crew dispute ended

According to a federal briefing published March 11, 2026, the minister invoked section 107 of the Canada Labour Code and directed the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to order the parties to resume service and refer outstanding terms to binding arbitration. The briefing says an arbitrator finalized a new agreement for Air Canada flight attendants on February 19, 2026. The August 2025 strike warning is therefore historical, not a current alert about that dispute. Government of Canada briefing
